Checking the Pull-Apart Alignment to the Cut Head

To assure a quality cut and proper function, the pull-apart must be aligned to the cut head.
It is important to check this alignment if you are receiving a poor cut or replace major
components, such as the pull-apart wear plate.

Use the following items to check the alignment.

• Dial indicator (Brown & Sharpe 599-7030-6)

• Dial indicator swivel clamp (Brown & Sharpe 599-7045-1)

• 5/16” x 1 1/2” shoulder bolt

• 1/4” x 1 1/4” shoulder bolt (shank must be turned down to .217”-.218”)

• Clamp jaws and dowel pin of the same size (3/4” is recommended, but not
required). Image 1

• A small mirror and flash may help with some portions of this procedure.

1. Use the 5/16” shoulder bolt, attach (use one of the tooling sandwich mounting holes) the dial
indicator to the bronze cutoff body.

2. Insert the clamp jaws and the dowel into the pull-apart clamp assembly. Allow the dowel to stick
out of the clamp jaw far enough so that the indicator can rotate around the dowel (see Image 1).

3. Place the contact point of the dial on the side of the dowel so that enough pressure to rotate
the dial .010-.015 is present. Now zero out the dial by rotating the knurled dial until the “0” is
underneath the dial indicator (see image 3).

Check Vertical Alignment

1. Rotate the cut head so that the dial indicator contact point is at the top of the dowel and zero out
the indicator.

NOTICE
Be sure that there is about .010-.015” pressure on the contact point.

2. Rotate the cut head around so that the dial indicator contact point is at the bottom side of the
dowel. Use a small mirror and flash light to assist in reading the indicator.

3. If the alignment is correct, then the dial indicator should read zero (+/-.002”). If the alignment is not
correct, then proceed with the following steps.

4. Determine if the pull-apart is low or high to the cut head.

IMPORTANT
The cut head is a constant and should never be modified.

5. If the pull-apart is high in relation to the cut head, then remove half of the amount from the slide
block that the indicator reads. Example: The indicator is at .005”. Remove .0025” from the top side
of the base block. This material should be ground from the top side the base block.

6. If the pull-apart is low in relation to the cut head, then add half of the amount that the indicator
reads to the wear plate.

NOTICE
If the wear plate working surface is thinner than .362”, then replace it before making any adjustments.

7. Once the necessary adjustments have been made, repeat Steps 1-3.

NOTICE
It is preferred that the pull-apart be .001-.002 high so that it can wear into center.

Checking Horizontal Alignment
1. Rotate the cut head so that the dial indicator contact point is at the side of the dowel closest to
you, and zero out the indicator (see Notice).

2. Rotate the cut head around so that the dial indicators contact point is 180° from the starting side of
the dowel. Use a small mirror to help read the indicator.

3. If the alignment is correct, then the dial indicator should read zero (+/- .0001”). If the alignment is
not correct, then proceed with the following steps.

4. Determine if the pull-apart is toward or away from you in relation to the cut head (see Notice).

5. Remove the “L” gibs from the pull-apart assembly and determine whether or not there is shim
stock underneath the top and side wear plates. If there is shim stock underneath either wear plate,
then take this into consideration while making adjustments (see Notice).

6. Adjust the “L” gib from the side that is furthest away from the machine center. Add shim stock
between the “L” gib and side wear plate. The amount of shim stock is determined by dividing the
reading from the indicator by two. Example: Indicator reads .005”. Add .0025” shim stock between
the wear plate and “L” gib.

7. Adjust the “L” gib closest to machine center. Grind the same amount off of the inside of the “L” gib
that you added to the first “L” gib.

8. Place the “L” gibs back on the pull-apart assembly and repeat Steps 1-3.
