DAILY PLAN
Lesson Title: Patterns Grade Level: Pre-K

S & S Statements: In our previous lesson we were focusing on how to mix and identify primary and
secondary colors. In this lesson the understanding from the previous lesson
will be used to delve into the concept of patterns through complementary
colors. By identifying patterns on clothing and animals students will use the
bottom of their shoes to find its pattern and learn how to replicate its pattern
and conceptually understand what a pattern means. Learning patterns
adds to the students’ understanding of visual culture because they can use
this knowledge to identify the many patterns they see within their lives from
different clothing, decorations or other visual media. Secondly,
complementary colors are used everywhere from logos to character
designs which students will constantly encounter in their lives.

Concepts: Patterns are made through repeating shapes and lines

Primary and secondary colors have complementary opposites with each other
Skills: Coloring skills
Ability to make a consistent line or shape

Academic Language:
Pattern: a shape or line that are repeated
Line: A long connection of marks
Shape: The external outline of a figure.
Complimentary Colors: Two colors that are across from each other on the color wheel. -
Red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple.

Purpose of Lesson (Overall Lesson Objective):

“Given paper and crayons materials …students will demonstrate understanding and creating pattern
through rubbing textures and replicating existing patterns an effective level of understanding.

CONTEXT = Paper, Crayons, pattern samples, their own shoes

BEHAVIOR = Rubbing Textures and Replicating found patterns
PRODUCT = Drawing with created pattern
STANDARD = effectively (understand that patterns are repeated)

Open Objective: Students will be able to identify, compare and contrast their different personal patterns
created from their own shoes.

Objectives:
Students will be able to identify how to create a pattern using repeated shapes and lines.
Students will be able to identify complementary colors.

The Work Lesson(s): using the understanding of primary colors creating secondary colors, students
will learn about repeated lines, and shapes by using complementary colors. Creating rubbings from
their shoes, students will recreate the pattern large, and review by creating a pattern with their peers
works.

Time Frame:
5 mins: introduction of our clothes, and animal patterns.
5 mins: demonstration of teacher creating a rubbing
10 mins: Taking off their shoes, creating the rubbings, and putting shoes back on.
5 mins: demonstration of replicating the pattern of the rubbing onto the shoe
10 mins: Students replicating the pattern of their shoes onto the paper.
5 mins: Reviewing and overall class activity of placing student’s works into pattern directed by class.

This lesson is a mixture between an introductory lesson and a work lesson. This is because we are
calling back to our previous lesson which was discussing primary and secondary colors in order to
introduce a new concept which is complementary colors. However, this is also an introductory lesson
because we are mainly focusing on the idea of patterns which is new.

Assessment Criteria:
Identifying and explaining what a pattern is
Understanding the relationship between complementary colors
Ability to create a consistent pattern out of shape or line

Teaching Resources Needed to Support the Lesson:

Pictures of patterns in nature (plants, animals)
Patterns in clothing (worn by teachers)
Example of pattern on bottom of shoe
Color wheel

Art Materials Necessary for the Lesson:

3X3 inch pre-cut white butcher paper
8X8 inch pre-cut construction paper
Crayons
Which kind of lesson is this day in the project or unit?

“The Introductory Lesson: motivation, explanation, review, begin work, further reviews, storage
The Work Lesson(s): review the work from the last lesson, reiterate the aim of the project through
questioning, establish objectives for today’s lesson: include a time frame, work sessions for students
and check by teacher, review progress
The Culminating Lesson: display work, review objectives of the project, class critique, written
critique”

questions to the class regarding our choice of dress.
We will bring up examples of animals and other
examples in nature where patterns can be found.
Demonstration of rubbing. Development: Students will be given 3x3
squares of paper and use a crayon to rub over
the bottom of one of their shoes. They will then
use the impression as a guide on how to create
Development: their own pattern.
Demonstrating the process of rubbing.
Demonstrating the process of replicating the pattern. Next, students will have the option to pick a
table where there will be different colored
papers and crayons that are coordinated to
complementary colors and will start trying to
replicate the pattern based on their shoes.

Conclusion: students as a class will review how

to create a pattern with their works. Students
will lead the order that they would like their
Conclusion: works to go based on what is in their drawing.
At the end of the lesson, students will come together
to reinforce what they learned about pattern by
putting the work they just created into similar
groupings to show the similarities in the shapes and
colors they used.
