12. Explain the various steps involved in design of rigid pavement as per IRC 58:2011.
(Dec’17) (10 marks)
13. Explain the various steps involved in design of flexible pavement as per IRC.
14. What are the requirements of good joints? Why are joints provided in cement
concrete roads? (May’15) (8 marks)
15. Mention the purpose of provision of expansion and contraction joints in cement
concrete pavement. (Dec’15) (3 marks)
16. Discuss on BUC and TDC. (Dec’18) (2 marks)
17. (May’15) (8 marks)
18. Calculate ESWL of a RMC Mixer carrying 6 M3 of concrete. The weight of empty
transit mixer along with crew is 4200 kg. Assume that front axle carries only 20%
of the total load and the remaining load is equally shared by rear axles. Take the
trial depth as 150, 200, 250 mm. Consider centre to centre spacing of tires is 270
mm & clear gaps is 110 mm. weight of concrete is 2500 kg/M3. The arrangement
of axle is as shown below.
21. Find percentage increase in CSA if rate of growth of traffic increases from 7% to
12%. The traffic after end of construction period is 300 cvpd design life is 10
years, VDF is 2.5 and LDF is 0.75. (May’18) (5 marks)
22.
23.
(Dec’17, May’17) (10 marks, 10 marks)
26. Find out the warping stress of 25 cm thick CC pavement with transverse joint at 5
m & longitudinal joint at 3.6 m interval. Take k = 6.9 kg/cm3, a = 15 cm,
temperature difference is 0.6ºC /cm slab thickness in day, temperature difference is
0.4 ºC /cm slab thickness in night. Take E = 3 x 105 kg/cm2, e = 10 x 10-6/ºC, l =
87.2 cm. (May’19,Dec’18) (6 marks, 10 marks)
27.
30.
32. Design a rigid pavement considering only load stress for wheel load of 7000 kg,
tyre pressure 7.5 kg/cm2, spacing between longitudinal joints is 3.75 m & spacing
between contraction joints is 4.2 m. Take E = 3 x 105 kg/cm2, µ= 0.15, e = 1 x 10-5,
k = 30 kg/cm3, flexural strength = 45 kg/cm2 take minimum F.O.S as 1.1.

34. Design a pavement for construction of new bypass for single lane having initial
traffic 600 CVPD in both directions. Rate of growth is 7.5 %, VDF is 2.5, CBR is
4 %, construction period is 2 years & ‘n’ is 15 years. Use design chart provided
