RACISM & XENOPHOBIA

1997 (in Telegraph column, reprinted in 2003 book “Lend me your Ears”):
“Mandela never accepted the Swiss-style constitution [de Klerk] proposed;
and last year, fed up with being marginalised, de Klerk quit the government.
He must have known that this would happen, that the majority tyranny of
apartheid would be followed by the majority tyranny of black rule.”i

2001 (in book “Friends, Romans, Countrymen”, in reference to Keith Vaz:

“Vaz, said the papers, was part of the ‘Asian’ culture, in which it was
thought quite normal, goodness gracious me, for portly, ghee-fed politicians
to be in the pay of portly, ghee-fed businessmen. I hope you won’t think me
perverse, but it struck me that he was hard done by. Tell me, all you who
think he is as greasy as an onion bhaji, exactly what he is supposed to have
done.”ii

2002 (in Telegraph newspaper column): “It is said that the Queen has come
to love the Commonwealth, partly because it supplies her with regular
cheering crowds of flag-waving piccaninnies.” “They say [Tony Blair] is
shortly off to the Congo. No doubt the AK47s will fall silent, and the pangas
will stop their hacking of human flesh, and the tribal warriors will all break
out in watermelon smiles to see the big white chief touch down in his big
white British taxpayer-funded bird.” [NOTE: he eventually apologised for
the comments in 2008.] iii

2002 Spectator article about Africa: “The continent may be a blot, but it is
not a blot upon our conscience. The problem is not that we were once in
charge, but that we are not in charge any more.” “The best fate for Africa
would be if the old colonial powers, or their citizens, scrambled once again
in her direction; on the understanding that this time they will not be asked to
feel guilty.”iv

2005 Spectator article: “To any non-Muslim reader of the Koran,

Islamophobia — fear of Islam — seems a natural reaction, and, indeed,
exactly what that text is intended to provoke”v

July 2005 (in Telegraph article): “The proposed ban on incitement to

‘religious hatred’ makes no sense unless it involves a ban on the Koran
itself; and that would be pretty absurd, when you consider that the Bill's
intention is to fight Islamophobia.”vi

August 2005 (in Telegraph article): “As far as I could tell, history was being
rewritten, for overtly political ends. I mean: Florence Nightingale we all
knew. But this ‘Mary Seacole’, I whispered to the Islington mums around
me, she's just been invented, hasn't she? It's just political correctness, I said.
They want to find a historic British role model for all those black nurses,
don't they? Hmmm?”vii

September 2005 (in Telegraph comment): “China is becoming in our

imaginations the fashionable new dread, the incubator of strange diseases, a
vast polluted landscape of Victorian factories where coolies sit in
expectorating rows, nourished on nothing but rice and the spleens of
pangolins, producing whirling typhoons of cheap bras and lingerie that race
across the seas and reduce the native industries of the West to
matchwood.”viii

2006 (reported remarks from a fringe meeting): “Supposing Tower Hamlets

or Bradford were to become governed by religious zealots. Are we ready for
complete local autonomy if it means imposing sharia law?”ix

March 2006 (column in The Telegraph): “All around us, in our courts, in the
oppressive liberty-destroying Bills being rushed through Parliament, we see
the disasters of multiculturalism, the system by which too many Muslims
have been allowed to grow up in this country with no sense of loyalty to its
institutions, and with a sense of complete apartness.”x

2006 newspaper column: “For 10 years we in the Tory Party have become
used to Papua New Guinea-style orgies of cannibalism and chief-killing.”xi

2007 (in essay added to an earlier book): “There must be something about
Islam that indeed helps to explain why there was no rise of the bourgeoisie,

2
no liberal capitalism and therefore no spread of democracy in the Muslim
world. It is extraordinary to think that under the Roman/Byzantine empire,
the city of Constantinople kept the candle of learning alight for a thousand
years, and that under Ottoman rule, the first printing press was not seen in
Istanbul until the middle of the nineteenth century. Something caused them
to be literally centuries behind.”xii

2008 (during ceremonial passing of Olympic flag): “And I say this

respectfully to our Chinese hosts, who have excelled so magnificently at
Ping-pong. Ping-pong was invented on the dining tables of England in the
19th century and it was called Wiff-waff!”xiii

2016: Boris Johnson wins competition organised by The Spectator (and

£1,000) for an offensive poem about President Erdogan of Turkey, which
includes a reference to having sex with animals.xiv

May 2016 (writing in The Sun about Barack Obama and the “missing” bust
of Winston Churchill in the White House): “Some said it was a snub to
Britain. Some said it was a symbol of the part-Kenyan president’s ancestral
dislike of the British empire – of which Churchill had been such a fervent
defender.”xv

October 2016: In a speech reflecting on his first 3 months as Foreign

Secretary, Boris Johnson refers to Africa as “that country”.xvi

Boris Johnson to stop him from completing the recitation of a colonial poem
by Rudyard Kipling whilst they were visiting a famous Buddhist sight.xvii

2018: Writing about Muslim women wearing burkas: “I would go further

and say that it is absolutely ridiculous that people should choose to go
around looking like letter boxes.”xviii

3
SEXISM & CHAUVINISM

1996 Telegraph article: “The unanimous opinion is that what has been called
the 'Tottymeter' reading is higher than at any Labour Party conference in
living memory” “Time and again the 'Tottymeter' has gone off as a young
woman delegate mounts the rostrum.”xix

was asked to sign the chests of girls with a magic marker.”xxiii

November 2006 (in Telegraph column): “Every week there is some new tale
of what a saucy French mistress is deemed to have done with her adolescent
charges behind the bicycle sheds; and, disgraceful though these episodes
may be, I don't hear anyone saying that children should be shielded from
adult women.”xxiv

2007 (speaking about Hillary Clinton): “She's got dyed blonde hair and
pouty lips, and a steely blue stare, like a sadistic nurse in a mental
hospital”xxv

May 2007: writing in The Spectator, Boris Johnson blames women for
pushing up house prices: “The colossal expansion in the numbers of female
graduates is in many ways a marvellous thing; but it has boosted the well-
documented process of assortative mating, by which middle-class graduates
marry middle-class graduates and thereby entrench their economic
advantages, pooling their graduate incomes to push up house prices and
increase the barriers to entry for the rest.”xxvi

2012: Boris Johnson is reprimanded by London assembly member Jennette

Arnold for his “disrespectful, patronising way at meetings” towards female
assembly members.xxvii

spectators’ sou’westers.”xxix

were going to university in Malaysia because “They’ve got to find men to
marry.”xxx

shaped tear ducts, for instance, and can therefore retain the tears for longer
before they splash down the cheek.”xxxi

March 2018: Boris Johnson is reprimanded by the Speaker after referring to

Emily Thornberry as “Lady Nugee” (Sir Christopher Nugee is her husband,
but she goes by her maiden name)xxxiii

5
HOMOPHOBIA

1998 (in column for The Telegraph): “Weep, O ye shirt-makers of Jermyn

Street, ye Cool Brittannia tailors and whatever exists of human finer feeling.
In the Ministry of Sound, the tank-topped bumboys blub into their pils”xxxiv

2000: “We don't want our children being taught some rubbish about
homosexual marriage being the same as normal marriage.”xxxv

April 2000 (in Spectator article): Boris Johnson attacks “Labour's appalling
agenda, encouraging the teaching of homosexuality in schools, and all the
rest of it.”xxxvi

July 2000 (in Telegraph column titled “Stand up and fight like a man, you
euro pansy”): “She was last week's victim of the ‘rent-boys of politics’, to
use Mr Follett's interesting phrase.”xxxvii

August 2000 (in Telegraph column): “It is still more compassionate to give
pensioners more of their own money, by cutting their taxes, rather than
bribing them with cheap television licences; and it is more sensitive to spare
parents' anxieties, than to allow Left-wing local authorities to waste
taxpayers' money on idiotic and irrelevant homosexual instruction.”xxxviii

2001 (in book “Friends, Voters, Countrymen”): “If gay marriage was OK -
and I was uncertain on the issue - then I saw no reason in principle why a
union should not be consecrated between three men, as well as two men, or
indeed three men and a dog.”xxxix

2007 (in Telegraph column): “Bring out yer policies, you big bunch of
pansies.”xl

June 2013 (speaking at a gay rights event): “I’m delighted that as of this

marry him.” [a number of guests walked out in protest at his remarks]xli

6
LIES

1988: Boris Johnson was fired from his job at The Times newspaper for
fabricating a quote in a front-page article.xlii

bench for lying about having had an affair (he denied it outright, but it
turned out to be true)xliii

May 2015: Boris Johnson committed to lie down “in front of those
bulldozers and stop the building, stop the construction of that third runway
[at Heathrow]”.xliv Instead, he went on a single day trip to Afghanistan
(literally there, and back) on the day the Heathrow expansion vote was held
in Parliament, costing the taxpayer £19,366.xlv

March 2016: Boris Johnson claimed on the Andrew Marr show that
Crossrail Tunnels had to be made 50% bigger because of a EU directive, just
in case German trains needed to run through them. This narrative was
contradicted by the Department for Transport, which explained that A)
construction was already well under way at the time the directive was
adopted, and B) the UK obtained an exemption for Crossrail, so it did not
affect the plans in any way whatsoever.xlvi

7
BREXIT

March 2003 (speaking in Parliament): “I had the great joy of spending five
years in Brussels, reporting on the creation of the single European market,
very largely brought about by Baroness Thatcher—it was in many ways a
Conservative programme of extending the benefits of free trade and mutual
recognition of standards and norms across the EU.”xlvii

May 2003 (speaking in Parliament): “My key point is that there are tangible
benefits to our membership of the European Union. At some stage the game
is up and all bets are off, as our political careers are all extinguished in one
way or another. However, under the terms of the benign and beneficent
Single European Act—several hon. Members have generously pointed out
that it was a Conservative inspiration and that Mrs. Thatcher, as she then
was, pushed forward with the extension of free market values across the
European Community—I would be able to seek an alternative career as a
dentist in Belgium or, with what we are inaugurating today, in Poland, Malta
or any of the other accession countries.”xlviii

October 2005 (on Desert Island Discs, talking about his time in the
Telegraph’s Brussels office): “I was just chucking these rocks over the
garden wall, and I'd listen to this amazing crash from the greenhouse, next
door, over, over in England, as everything I wrote from Brussels was having
this amazing, explosive effect on the Tory Party, and it really gave me this, I
suppose, rather weird sense of, of power.”xlix

2013: "I'd vote to stay in the Single Market. I'm in favour of the Single
Market. I want us to be able to trade freely with our European friends and
partners."l

May 2013: “If we left the EU, we would end this sterile debate, and we
would have to recognise that most of our problems are not caused by
‘Bwussels’, but by chronic British short-termism, inadequate management,
sloth, low skills, a culture of easy gratification and underinvestment in both
human and physical capital and infrastructure”li

May 2015 (interview in the Telegraph on the subject of European

unification): “Napoleon, Hitler, various people tried this out, and it ends
tragically. The EU is an attempt to do this by different methods.”lii

October 2015 (in Spectator column, writing about a trip to Japan): “what
was the one question that no one bothered to ask, in three solid days of
talking to Japanese business people? No one seems worried about the UK’s

8
EU referendum. They are smart enough to know that Britain will remain,
whatever happens, in a European free-trade zone.”liii

April 2016 (in interview): “I am very pro-Turkish but what I certainly can't
imagine is a situation in which 77million of my fellow Turks and those of
Turkish origin can come here without any checks at all. That is mad - that
won't work.”liv

May 2016: "If we vote leave on June 23, we can take back control of £350
million a week and spend it on our priorities here in this country, including
on our National Health Service."lv

May 2016: "Why are we sending £10 billion pounds a year net to Brussels,
some of which is spent on Spanish bullfighting?"lvi

June 2016: Boris Johnson is reported to have said “F--k business” at a

diplomatic gathering when asked about corporate concerns over a hard
Brexit. (This was never denied.)lvii

January 2017: Boris Johnson compares French president Francois Hollande

to a guard in a prisoner of war camp: “If Mr Hollande wants to administer
punishment beatings to anybody who chooses to escape [the EU], rather in
the manner of some World War II movie, then I don’t think that is the way
forward, and actually it’s not in the interests of our friends and partners”lviii

July 2017: “There is no plan for no deal [Brexit] because we are going to get
a great deal.”lix

September 2017: The UK Statistics Authority officially reprimands Boris

Johnson for his repeated use of the false figure of £350 million a week as the
amount we send to the EU.lx

November 2017 (speaking in Parliament): “As the right hon. Gentleman

knows full well, when we leave the European Union, there will be at least
£350 million a week, of which we will take back control. As he knows full
well, substantial sums from that funding will be available for use in our
national health service.”lxi

Commons chamber to avoid answering questions on his Northern Ireland
memo.lxii

9
February 2018: Boris Johnson raises eyebrows with his Northern Ireland
border comparison: “There’s no border between Camden and Westminster,
but when I was mayor of London we anaesthetically and invisibly took
hundreds of millions of pounds from the accounts of people travelling
between those two boroughs without any need for border checks
whatever.”lxiii

February 2018: “There's no sensible reason why we should not continue to

be able to retire to Spain, or indeed anywhere else, as we did long before
Spain joined what was then called the Common Market. We can continue
the whirl of academic exchanges that have been a feature of European
cultural life since the Middle Ages.”lxiv

June 2018 (with reference to the Northern Irish border): “It's so small and
there are so few firms that actually use that border regularly, it's just beyond
belief that we're allowing the tail to wag the dog in this way. We're allowing
the whole of our agenda to be dictated by this folly.”lxv

September 2018 (writing in the Mail on Sunday): “We have wrapped a

suicide vest around our constitution and handed the detonator to Brussels”lxvi

10
HISTORIC DRUG USE

2000 (in Telegraph column): “I have already confessed, some time ago, that
I have had a moment of drugs madness, in Amsterdam duiphuis. There was
the spliff, full of funk or skunk or Colombian punk, or something, and I had
a puff.”lxvii

2003 (during appearance on Room 101, broadcast on 10 November): “Now

what are you asking here? It's perfectly true that I have had some drugs.”lxviii

2005 (during appearance on Have I Got News For You): “I think I was once
given cocaine but I sneezed and so it did not go up my nose. In fact, I may
have been doing icing sugar.”lxix

2007 (interview with Piers Morgan for GQ Magazine): “PM: You once
alluded to the fact that you tried cocaine but sneezed on it. BJ: Yes. I tried it
at university and I remember it vividly. And it achieved no pharmacological,
psychotropical or any other effect on me whatsoever.”lxx

March 2008 (interview with Janet Street-Porter for Marie Claire magazine):
“JSP: You smoked dope before you went to university. BJ: That’s true, but
the stuff you and I may have smoked is not the same as what the kids are
having now. I think skunk and this stuff is very, very dangerous.” “JSP: You
said in interviews that you’ve snorted coke. BJ: Well, that was when I was
19. It all goes to show that, sometimes, it’s better not to say anything.”lxxi

2014: “What I do remember is once, it being suggested I try a substance that

was alleged to be cocaine and I made an effort – I won’t deny – I made an
effort to try and ingest this substance, or inhale it, rather – and I failed.”lxxii

11
MISCELLANEOUS GAFFES & SCANDALS

May 2002: Asked about his “greatest mistake”, Boris Johnson admits having
made up a quote when working for the Times in the 1980s, then concocting
a second story to try and justify the errors of fact in the first.lxxiii

how much Mr Izzard may splutter, is that the European Union did indeed
have a weird prototype in Hitler's wartime Reich.”lxxiv

have been spent in a state of semi-incoherence, composing foam-flecked
hymns of hate to the latest Euro-infamy”lxxv

2004 (as editor of The Spectator): Authorised the publication of a poem

calling for the extermination of the Scots, and describing them as a
“verminous race”. [The poem has since been removed from the magazine’s
archives.]lxxvi

October 2004 (article in The Spectator about the Hillsborough disaster):

“The deaths of more than 50 Liverpool football supporters at Hillsborough
in 1989 was undeniably a greater tragedy than the single death, however
horrible, of Mr Bigley; but that is no excuse for Liverpool’s failure to
acknowledge, even to this day, the part played in the disaster by drunken
fans at the back of the crowd who mindlessly tried to fight their way into the
ground that Saturday afternoon.”lxxvii

February 2006 (on climate change): “Humanity has largely lost its fear of
hellfire, and yet we still hunger for a structure, a point, an eschatology, a
moral counterbalance to our growing prosperity. All that is brilliantly
supplied by climate change. Like all the best religions, fear of climate
change satisfies our need for guilt, and self-disgust, and that eternal human
sense that technological progress must be punished by the gods.”lxxviii

April 2007 (writing about Portsmouth): “Here we are, in one of the most
depressed towns in southern England, a place that is arguably too full of
drugs, obesity, under-achievement and Labour MPs.”lxxix

June 2007 (writing about Gordon Brown taking over from Tony Blair
without a General Election): “It's the arrogance. It's the contempt. That's
what gets me. It's Gordon Brown's apparent belief that he can just trample
on the democratic will of the British people. It's at moments like this that I

12
think the political world has gone mad, and I am alone in detecting the
gigantic fraud.”lxxx

April 2008: Boris Johnson apologised for allowing an article to be run in the

from his Grade II-listed home because he didn’t have planning permission
for it.lxxxiii

January 2010: In an interview on Top Gear, Boris Johnson admitted having

once driven through the back wall of a barn as a part-time tractor driver
because: “It had a great many very complicated gears, and at the crucial
moment I couldn't remember which gear you used when you wanted to slow
down. A sort of blankness descended.” He went on to state his pay was
docked as a result.lxxxiv

January 2010: Speaking to Top Gear, Boris Johnson defends himself for
riding his bike while speaking on a mobile phone by stating it’s still possible
to reach the brakes with one hand, and then asking Jeremy Clarkson: “Are
you saying that people with only one arm shouldn’t ride a bicycle? That’s
discriminatory.”lxxxv

July 2010: “In 1904, 20 per cent of journeys were made by bicycle in
London. I want to see a figure like that again. If you can't turn the clock
back to 1904, what's the point of being a Conservative?”lxxxvi

August 2011: Boris Johnson refused to cut short his holiday to deal with the
fall-out of the Tottenham riots. (He eventually did, but only after several

me angry... spending £20,000 on a dinner at the Dorchester (hotel) for Sinn
Féin.”lxxxviii

13
April 2012: “My argument to the Treasury is that a pound spent in Croydon
is far more of value to the country from a strict utilitarian calculus than a
pound spent in Strathclyde.”lxxxix

February 2013 (attacking a meeting of the London Assembly): "Are you

saying they're abdicating their duty to scrutinise me? Are you saying they
haven't the guts to put questions to me? Great supine protoplasmic
invertebrate jellies." [He was then asked to leave the session.]xc

June 2013: Boris Johnson said that he wanted to bring fox hunting back to
London. “This will cause massive unpopularity and I don't care. I'm pro
liberty and individual freedom. If people want to get together to form the fox
hounds of Islington I'm all for it.” “I got wild with anger not so long ago
because I thought our cat had been mauled by a fox. I wanted to go out with
my 2.2 [air rifle] and blaze away.”xci

September 2013: “It’s fair to say that the UK economy has finally reached
its Costa Concordia moment.” [Costa Concordia was the cruise ship that ran
aground, killing 32 people.]xcii

Value Bread? 50p? 49p? I can tell you the price of a bottle of Champagne.
How about that?"xciii

November 2013 (writing in The Telegraph): “It is my duty to stick up for

ex-gang members to disgraced former MPs. But there is one minority that I
still behold with a benign bewilderment, and that is the very, very rich.”xciv

November 2013 (writing in The Telegraph): “I don't believe that economic

equality is possible; indeed, some measure of inequality is essential for the
spirit of envy and keeping up with the Joneses and so on that it is a valuable
spur to economic activity.”xcv

March 2014: Boris Johnson casually suggests handing over a public park in
Lewisham to create a horticultural centre because the original plans didn’t
allow enough space for the building. “What about if you amalgamated with
the park next door?” “Lewisham, come on Lewisham, your park is needed
for horticulture.”xcvi

September 2014 (addressing a rally at the Conservative Party Conference):

“And I have read that there are some people - probably the type who are

14
thinking of defecting to Ukip - who present themselves at A&E with barely
credible injuries sustained through vacuum cleaner abuse.”xcvii

November 2014: Boris Johnson says that the tolerant drug policy in the
Netherlands has made Amsterdam city centre “sleazy”.xcviii

November 2015: Boris Johnson had to cut short his Middle East trip after
Palestinians refused to meet with him because of what he said earlier that
week about the possibility of an Israeli trade boycott: “I reject completely
the suggestion by some corduroy jacketed snaggletoothed lefty academics in
the UK”.xcix

December 2015: “The only reason I wouldn’t visit some parts of New York
is the real risk of meeting Donald Trump.”c

House): “Nest of paedophiles”ci

March 2016 (praising President Assad of Syria): “I suppose it is bizarre to

over £52,000 in earnings later than he was supposed to.cvii

rules by not declaring part-ownership of a property in Somerset for nearly a
year after the deadline he was supposed to.cviii

March 2019 (interviewed on LBC Radio): “One comment I would make is

that I think an awful lot of the money, an awful lot of police time, now goes
into these historic offences and all this malarkey – £60 million I saw was
being spaffed up the wall on some investigation into historic child abuse and
all this kind of thing.”cix

April 2019: The Telegraph defended the publication of a recent Boris

Johnson lie about “no deal” being the most popular Brexit option by
mounting the bizarre defence that it was ok to print even though it was
known to be a lie because it was “comically polemical”.cx
