Types of Grapevine Communication:

1. Single Strand Chain: It is the passing of information from the line of persons to the recipient.
For example, when the person 1 tells 2, who tells 3, who tells 4, till the information reaches
most of them.

2. Gossip Chain: Gossip chain is when a person goes around communicating the information
or message he or she has obtained.

passed may be interesting but not essential.

further pass the information or message to other selected persons.

Grapevine communication in an informal channel of business communication and it exists

more at lower levels of organization despite existence of formal channels of communication
due to various reasons.

A good example of grapevine communication in my organization is when a manager who

belonged to a women group for a project. They go for lunch on every Fridays and this was
the discussed topic among the employees.

Grapevine communication is beneficial as, it can be used as a medium between the employer
and employees in the organisation.

Benefits of Grapevine Communication:

• Grapevine communication helps the message or information to spread rapidly. • It helps to
keep the employees well informed about the management in the organisation.

• It also helps to create a healthy environment in the organisation.

• It helps in identification of leaders and also win their confidence.

• It can act as a substitute for formal channel of communication.

• It can sometimes allow the organisation to get quick feedback.

Grapevine communication can also prove detrimental to any organization in following ways.
• Grapevine can sometimes carry partial information as it is more based on rumors. Thus, the
complete state of affairs cannot be depicted.

• It cannot always be trustworthy as it is unofficial path of communication and it is spread

more by gossips.

• It can also lead to making hostility against the executives.

• Grapevine communication may hamper goodwill of the organisation as it carries false

information about the higher management in the organization.

• It can lead to discouraging rumors and character assassination.

ENTRY 2

Grapevine  is  a  form  of  informal  communication,  operates  both  in  internal  and  external
informal channels which can contribute to and benefit the organization.

Therefore, it is found in all organizations. It does not follow any prescribed or predetermined rule
and spreads any information quickly.

Through the grapevine, information flows in different directions linking almost every one of an
organization.

It is governed by social and personal relationships rather than officially recognized rules and
formalities.

Grapevine operates both in internal and external informal channels. It passes opinions, suspicions,
and rumors that generally do not move through formal channels.

By nature, the grapevine is a channel of horizontal communication.

However, in fact, it does not follow any set pattern. It effectively operates horizontally, vertically
and even diagonally.

Grapevine is a natural outgrowth person-to-person informal communication channel through

which information flows horizontally, vertically or diagonally without following any set rule or
regulation among the people within or outside the organization.
