- This report by Shreyas Shrivastsa, describes about the beginning and on site progress of a method/
strategy adopted for slum dweller . It covers seven different mass slum areas in yerawada, pune.
Initated by SPARC, SDI. Implemented by Prasanna Desai Architects, Flilpe Balestra PMC, NGO.
Units – 1200units (269 sq.ft each). Project funded by central gov.

Mappi ng various typol ogi es of living hous e units, density of peopl e, helps to analys e their the
currect conditi ons and what can be done to make it better for them. Also the existing seneri o
shoud be studied properl y like in paper grouped into single, doubl e, tripe, quadr upl e and
clusters . The existing typologi es of Kuchas were defor m e d rectangl es like trapez oi ds . Their
idea was re adjust the cluster sizes for more open space and wideni ng the narrow lanes. The
design strategy emer g ed out of these existing typologi es ,this helps in designi ng our design
accor di ng to existing condti ons of site and built. Since this projec t was funded by gover nm e nt
all constr ucti o n cost needed to be as less as possibl e and design effecti v ely to solve their
probl ems . A four coloum n techni qu e was used for opti mum use of costs, space and catter high
density popul ati on. Three housi ng types were conceptu aliz e d with the design and users team.
Type A, Type B, Type C.

A) Traditi onal two storey structur e enabli n g vertical extensi on, over structur ed for further
loads.
B) Three storey structur e on stilts wher e the ground floor void can be used for parking of
ricks, shops or for keepi ng animals .
C) Three storey structur e with a void in between ground ,second floor, an outdoor
veranda h room.

Elemental , lead by Alejandr o Aravena have bought major change to design strategy for social
housi ng and also public policies.
