The Malampaya Journey

Year 1981 when shell philippines exploration B.V. discovered Malampaya Gas Field, it was 80km away
from Palawan. Shell with their partners enlighten to have this project and their first challenge they
encounter on how to connect the well to the deposit and next is the pipelines from that gas field to
batangas. Its about 504 km pipelines connectiones being used to transport the gas for the Luzon's power
source. But Malampaya Project is also more on technological programs for communities. They have
three options in doing routes of pipelines connections. First is in north of mindoro but it too deep and
there are not technology to set up the pipelines there. Next is in the middle of mindoro, but they have so
much beautiful environment and Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. cant take this away and last is in the
south of mindoro. They considered the south of mindoro because of considering the enviroment, they
will spent more money for the pipelines connections. By setting those pipelines connections, they
considering all people will not affect in some changes and they also giving them many benefits as
community by putting trainings and seminars for the people. Teresa Atienza barangay captain in Nauhan,
Oriental Mindoro says that 95percent of their community live from fishing and if it destroy they are the
first one to suffer. They have their doubts on having those pipelines in their fishing area because it may
affect their daily living. But Shell assures that there are no problems in those pipelines. They landed the
pipelines in the safe zone away from the fishing area of the people and they gave people sustainable
development program for their own benefits. Concrete Gravity Structure was build in Sitio Agusuhin,
Subic and become a foundation of Malampaya Platform. Sitio Agusuhin, Subic is one of the place that
have Malaria. In the past, they don't have health center and schools. But by the program of Malampaya,
they support the community to have development. When establishing those health center and school,
they also continuing the construction of the platform and getting the pipelines connections everyday
about 5 to 7km. The mission of Shell Exploration B.V. was to sustain the development of those
community even if the constructions of the platform and pipelines are finished. And the subsea facility
was itinayo then after two weeks topside was also itinayo. And after that, 40 to 45 percent of the power
source of the philippines was from Malampaya Gas Lift. And natural gas make replacement of using oil as
power source. After that different place having many programs to achieve sustainable development by
malampaya foundation. And Malampaya Project still giving us a good clean natural gas.

Malampaya

Eva malabanan is a community organizer that travels in mountain, rivers and forests. She said when
saying Palawan, people there have Malaria and they have this beliefs that malaria came from drinking
buko, drinking uncleaned water and eatinf pineapples on an empty stomach. But when the Movement
Against Malaria came, they teach every people the truths about that disease. With the help of local
government and cooperations of the people in palawan and with the support of shell philippines
exploration the Movement Against Malaria was founded in 1999 in Palawan. Having Malaria as top one
of the problem there, many people was save by having a knowledge about the disease. And with the
help of new center near in their place, they can easily go and get a cure from the disease. People also did
some stream-clearing operations to prevent malaria-carrying mosquitoes to breed and they also put
some fish in those stream. Eva Malabanan said that coorperation and participation of the people is
important to have a successful goal in their organization. She said that taking care of the health of other
people is not only a job but also a responsibility.
