Reading Response #10

The article discusses how a rural town in Africa has absolutely no resources that could help the

people there succeed. Teenagers that are extremely good at sports cannot even train properly due

to lack of funds, equipment, and just that they literally do not have money for shoes. The author

uses a quote by the coach “the most disadvantaged rural area” which suffices where they are

located and how they are treated there. The author displays the clear racism and discrimination

between white African salaries and black African salaries. The article mentions how a female

athlete from South Africa was questioned if she was a man or a woman because of how she

looked like. The officials running the competitions ran several tests on her to determine if she

was a man or woman without even telling her that they had no right to run these tests without her

permission. In my opinion, this is absolutely sexist that just because someone looks the way they

do people have a problem with it because they are succeeding. I found it so strange that the

author mentioned so many examples of how people have gone through these issues and

circumstances. It was also interesting to learn how no one talks about these issues that people go

through and it should definitely receive more attention. I find it so strange that there are so many

examples of these type of problems and this is something that people do not realize how wrong it

is. The article also mentions that during these tests the women would get touched inappropriately
without their permission and these women still do not know their rights. It is disgusting to see

this system and there are no strict rules to enforce it.
