Research Plan:

A. Question or Problem being addressed

1.) Which based gel-type air freshener could have a better scent retention performance?

Set up A: Gracilaria edulis (Gulaman)

Set up B: Kappaphycus alvarezii (Agar-agar)

Set up C: Commercial Gel-Type Air Freshener

B. Goals/ Expected Outcomes/ Hypotheses

1.) If Gracilaria edulis (Gulaman) will have a better scent retention performance

compared to Kappaphycus alvarezii (Agar-agar) and Commercial Gel-Type Air

Freshener then it is more preferable to use.

C. Description in Detail of Method and Procedures

The materials like the plastic cups with cover, laboratory gloves, laboratory mask,

disinfectant, and bleach are to be bought from the pharmacy while the knife and the

chopping board are to be provided by the researchers’ household. The sulphuric acid and

other laboratory apparatuses will be provided by the Western Mindanao State University

laboratory. The Gracilaria edulis (S.G. Gmelin) will be given by the Zamboanga State

College of Marine Sciences and Technology, while the Kappaphycus Alvarezii (Agar-

agar) is to be bought from the wet market.

II. Preparation of Fresh Seaweeds

200 grams of Gracilaria Edulis (Gulaman) and Kappaphycus alvaverzii (Agar-

agar) will be prepared. The Gracilaria edulis (Gulaman) and Kappaphycus alvarezii

(Agar-agar) are to be cut into smaller pieces by using a knife and a chopping board then

grind it to bits by using blender. Afterwards it will be placed in both separate beakers.

III. Gracilaria edulis (S.G. Gmelin) Based Gel-type Air Freshener

The researchers are to use 200 grams of Gracilaria edulis (Gulaman); it will be

cut into smaller pieces by using a knife and a chopping board and grinded into bits by

using blender then it be placed on a 1000 mL beaker. Then it will be added 300 mL of

water, then to be heated on a hot plate with a temperature of 100 degrees Celsius and to

be continuously stirred for 1 hour and 15 minutes. It will be stirred by using Stirring Rod,

the researchers will add 60 mL of Hypochlorite for bleaching and 5mL of 5% solution

Sulphuric acid to adjust its pH to 5. After the bleach will be added, the Gracilaria edulis

(Gulaman)’s color is expected to change from brownish-red to dirty white. The scent is to

be added and stirred afterwards. The researchers will prepare 5 plastic cups with cover.

The Gracilaria edulis (Gulaman) will be boiled on a hot a plate for 1 hour and 30

minutes and to be divided equally to the 5 individual plastic cups by 50 mL by using a

100 mL graduated cylinder and covered each container. Then it will be left on a certain

place for it to be cooled and jellified.

IV. Kappaphycus alvarezii (Agar-agar) Based Gel-type Air Freshener

The researchers used 200 grams of Kappaphycus alvarezii (Agar-agar); it will be

cut into smaller pieces by using a knife and a chopping board and to be grinded into bits
by using blender then it will be placed on 1000 mL Beaker. Then it will be added 300 mL

of water, then be heated on a hot plate and was continuously stirred for 1 hour. It will be

stirred then the researchers will add 40 mL of Hypochlorite for bleaching and 5 mL of

5% solution Sulphuric acid to adjust its pH to 5. After the bleach was added, the

Kappaphycus Alvarezii (Agar-agar)’s color is expected to change from green to dirty-

white. The scent will then be added and stirred. The researchers prepared 5 plastic cups

with cover. After the Kappaphyucs alvarezii (Agar-agar) was boiled on a hot a plate for 1

hour, and it will be divided equally to the 5 individual plastic cups by 50 mL and

covered. Then it will be left on a certain place for it to be cooled and jellified.

IV. Commercial Based Gel-type Air Freshener

The researchers will buy the 5 gel-type commercial air fresheners at a

supermarket.

V. Sensory Evaluation Test

Sensory Evaluation test will be used to test the scent retention performance of the

three gel-type air fresheners. Fifteen respondents are to be selected to evaluate the gel

type air fresheners in their respective comfort rooms. The five Gracilaria edulis

(Gulaman) air fresheners are to be placed in the cubicles of the males’ comfort rooms

while the Kappaphycus alvarezii (Agar-agar) will be placed in the cubicles of the

females’ comfort room and the Commercial Gel-Type air fresheners will be placed in the

comfort rooms of the faculty.

VI. Disposal Treatment

After all experimentations are to be finished, the researchers will segregate all the

waste produced from non-biodegradable waste to biodegradable waste and will be

placed in plastic bags. Then, they will be disposed into disposal bins.
