How to become an ace engineering coordinator?

This post applies to construction contractors involved in setting up

-refineries

-chemical plants etc.

An engineering coordinator (EC) coordinates engineering.

He should have knowledge about engineering deliverables.

Common engineering departments

1. Process
2. Piping
3. Mechanical
4. Fire Fighting
5. Electrical
6. Instrumentation
7. Civil, Structural and Architectural (CSA)

An engineering coordinator should have knowledge of what each department does.

For example, process department makes the following deliverables.

1. Process Flow diagram (PFD)

2. Heat and Mass Balance (HMB)
3. Equipment List
4. P&ID
5. Line list

Knowledge of interdependencies

An engineering coordinator should have firm grasp about the inputs and outputs.

Try answering this question? What are the inputs to an isometric?

Once the deliverable is made, which departments will use it? An engineering coordinator needs to know
the inputs and outputs for each deliverable. He should have a basic idea on how much time it will take
to produce a deliverable. He should know how to monitor and control the work. Basic knowledge of
engineering progress measurement is helpful.

Soft skills.

Bulk of the work goes in communicating and managing people.
