THE IMPORTANCE OF LUBRICATION IN WIRE ROPES
All wire ropes require consistent maintenance
and proper care in order to remain in good
condition and functionally efficient.

 During operation the strands that make up


a wire rope are under constant stress and
strain

It has three anchor holes that enable it to secure and easy to use locking
toggles to lock the two halves of the collar in place.
The Collar allows lubrication of wire ropes from 8mm to 48mm.

Recommended Lubricant
Choosing the right lubricant is an important step to ensure the effec-
tiveness of wire rope lubrication. It is vital to choose the lubricant
which is suitable for wire rope application. The following criteria is
proposed to be considered when choosing the lubricant:

NLGI Grade
Good quality lubricant are characterized by high adherence to steel
in order to withstand passage over the reeving system. Propose to
choose “NLGI 1.5 to 2.0” lubricant.

Good Water Resistant


With reference to DIN 51807:1, a good water resistant lubricant
should have result of “0=no change” so to consider water resistant.

Good Corrosion Protection


The grease contains antioxidants and corrosion inhibitors for ultimate
corrosion protection.

Colour
It is proposed to choose light colour of lubricant which will not ob-
struct the detection of possible rope damage during wire inspection.

Drop Point
The dropping point is one of the determinations that characterize the
grease’s thermal stability. It is proposed to choose the lubricant with
minimum drop point of 140oC or above.

Penetration
The higher the penetration, the softer the lubricant. It is propose to
choose penetration value between 265 to 320.

Recommended Lubricant Consumption
There are several factors to determine the lubricant quantity required
for wire rope lubrication such as rope speed, pumping pressure, etc.
