Formatted: Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt

separate genre.

What are conventions and what do they have to do with online dating? Well, conventions

are simply the types of words that are used in the rhetorical situation, the lingo if you will. The

conventions of a genre are specific to the rhetorical situation and are part of what defines the

genre. In online dating, the conventions can vary slightly with each different person’s tactics.

Some people take a comical approach, or a serious approach, and even wild, straight forward

approaches, all of which have the same concise, short, and choppy format. An example of these

short, choppy bios is on a Tinder Bio Examples website, “taller than you in heels. Love positive

people, quirks, good wine, Italian food, tense movies, live music, decadent, open to most things,

but let’s start with a casual date. Comes with one free dog” (10 Most Successful Tinder Bio

Examples for Guys). This is an example of the conventions of online dating. It differs from speed

dating because you would use complete sentences, you would be carrying a full one conversation

rather than advertising yourself with limited words, like in online dating. Speed dating

conventions would be a more rushed, attempt to get to know somebody, while still using

complete sentences, and interacting with the other person. Bar dating conventions would be more

smooth, paced, and natural flowing interactions. The conventions of speed dating are based on

the audience of one person at a time, with a context of being limited to 5 minutes before another

person gets a chance to impress the same person. The conventions of bar dating are based on the

audience of one person in total, whom you have unlimited time with, and the context being your

attempt to impress and connect with one person. In retrospect, the conventions of online dating
Bianchi 5

are based on a large audience that is scrolling by your profile, the context being your attempt to

grab their attention from the hundreds of profiles they are scrolling through. The differences in

conventions between the antecedents and online dating are significant reasons as to why it is a

separate genre.

In an interview with my mother, Cassandra Bianchi, about the new genre of online dating

and its antecedents she gave some very insightful information; When asked about the intended

audience of online dating she gave an almost shocking response, saying it was intended for “shy

people who can hide behind a screen”. She also notes that “once the internet was in every home,

it became convenient to date from your living room.” Another prior genre of dating, speed

dating, is when eight guys and eight girls go to a restaurant, and each guy gets 5 minutes with

each girl to talk to them and see if they are interested. At the end of the event, the guys can go up

to the girl they are most interested in to talk some more, and potentially exchange numbers. This

rhetorical situation is similar to online dating because you have a short time, or limited word

count in your bio, to get somebody interested. The rhetorical situation is different, however,

because online dating is not one on one, face to face, but rather to a large mass of unknown

people. Finding a date by going to a bar is a different rhetorical situation than online dating, as

well. In a bar, you are not forced to sit together for five minutes like speed dating, it’s more like

online dating in the sense that it is your own choice who you talk to and for how long. Just like

speed dating, bar dating is one on one, which alters your rhetorical situation. Due to these

differences in rhetorical situations, online dating is its own genre.

All in all, it is apparent that online dating has become its own genre. With its own specific conventions

The antecedent genres are speed dating and bar dating. Speed dating is when eight girls

and eight guys go to a restaurant the event is being held at. Each girl sits at a separate table and

each guy gets 5 minutes at each table to talk to the girls and see if they are interested in each
Bianchi 6

other. If anyone hits it off, then after the event they can go up to each other and exchange phone

numbers. The rhetorical situation of speed dating is like online dating profiles because they both

have a short time in order to interest the other person. The rhetorical situations are different

because online dating profiles are not one on one, but rather to a large mass of unknown people.

Bar dating’s rhetorical situation is more like online dating profiles than speed dating because you

get to choose who you talk to and for how long, but online dating has a much wider selection and

requires you to use more mass appeal conventions. The conventions of a genre are always

tailored towards the intended audience.

The rhetorical situation is the relationship between the author, the audience, and subject,

and their effect on the context the piece is written in. If any part of this triangle is changed, then

the whole genre could change. For example, the differences between online dating profiles and

speed dating are in the relationship between audiences. The audience of speed dating is

predetermined and limited to the number of girls or guys that signed up. The audience does not

change once everyone is signed up. In speed dating you only get 5 minutes to talk to each person,

and this changes the context the audience and author interact in. The audience of online dating is

the millions of people using the dating app. In online dating the profiles only let you write up to a

certain word limit, changing the context the audience and author interact in. These differences

between audiences and the context the audience and author interact in change the genre

completely.

Another reason online dating profile are different genres than speed dating and bar

dating is the audience is different for all three. The audience for online dating profiles are any

person of the intended gender using the app or site. The audience for speed dating is the person

at the other side of the table, and the audience for bar dating is the person at the bar you are
Bianchi 7

interested in. In an interview with my mother, Cassandra Bianchi, I asked her about the intended

audience of online dating, and her response was shocking. She says online dating profiles are for

“shy people who can hide behind a screen”, and noted, “once the internet was in every home it

became convenient to date from your living room”. Online dating is relatively new, especially

for someone who was alive before the internet, so the reality that it is extremely popular among

the younger generations was surprising to my mom.

Online dating profiles are a new genre. They have their own conventions, and rhetorical

situations that set it apart from its antecedent genres, online dating is a genre that grew from

speed dating, and bar dating, and new technologies.. The major changes in conventions and

rhetorical situations occurred as the formality of audiences prevent online dating profiles from

being the same genre as bar dating changed with the convenience and availability of the and

speed dating. New technological universeadvances allowed dating to evolve. Now you can date

from the comfort of your own couch, getting your profile out to millions of people. Online dating

has opened new doors for shy, lazy, and informal people. Online dating is a great new way to

find potential matches and has completely changed the act of dating. While traditional people,

allowing them to talk over the internet before meeting in person. Traditional dating is still an

essential aspect of developing connections, the technological aspect ofdating, but online dating

has already found a home in every relationship.the dating scene. Texting and, social media, and

online dating profiles have made a massive change in the way relationships are made and kept.

Online dating is becoming increasingly popular but, whether it is a fad or a staple of dating, it

has become its own genre.
