CHAPTER I
PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
Introduction
The Philippines is facing a controversial issue which is the dengue outbreak. 10 regions
in the Philippines are in critical level of dengue which is increasing rapidly which caused a lot of
death and most of victims are children. Dengue outbreak is a serious problem which needs to be
solved. Our country suffers from dengue fever, a single bite of the mosquito may cause a life of a
human being or suffers in sudden high fever, severe headaches, pain behind the eyes severe
joint and muscle pain fatigue, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, which appears two to five days after
the onset of fever. Because of this the researchers decided to choose this study which is the
evaluation of thermal fogging spraying method in mosquito control in South 1-A Central School in
Barangay Tubod Iligan City. This study aims to evaluate if the thermal fogging is effective or not.
In this study, the researchers will gain more information about the advantage and disadvantage
of Thermal Fogging and how it helps to solve dengue cases. Some citizens do not know how to
avoid and solve dengue cases, thus, this study aims to provide factual information that will inform
the citizens about the importance and benefits of Thermal Fogging. Moreover in this study it also
aims to inform the authority that the thermal fogging is effective or not.
The researchers came up with this research to know more on evaluating thermal fogging
spraying method for mosquito control in South 1-A Central School in Barangay Tubod Iligan City.
1.2 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study would hopefully benefit the following:
Teachers. They would gain knowledge on how to control the number of mosquitos by
using thermal fogging.
Parents. Through this study, the parents will be able to protect their children from
mosquitos.
Future Researchers. They will be able to utilize this research as a point of reference in
conducting studies on evaluating the Thermal Fogging spraying method in mosquito control.
1.3 Statement of the Problem
This study aims the possible effects of Thermal Fogging in Mosquito cases at South 1-A Central
School in Barangay Tubod Iligan City. The researchers sought to answer the following questions:
1. What are the numbers of mosquitos before they conducted the thermal fogging
2. What are the numbers of mosquitos after they conducted the thermal fogging?
3. How frequent South 1-A Central School conduct thermal fogging?
1.4 Conceptual Framework
Thermal fogging is the main because is the solution to the problem which kills the
mosquitos using the smoke. The dengue outbreak in the Philippines became a controversial issue
and it needs to be solved. If the place will conduct thermal fogging next would the mosquito
control which manages the population of the mosquitos to reduce their damage to human health
and lastly the dengue which is the virus that can be obtain in mosquitos as a result the dengue
cases in the South 1-A Central School will decrease because of the thermal fogging.

Notice that the variables of the study are explicit in the paradigm presented in Figure 1. In
the illustration, the three variables are 1) thermal fogging, 2) Mosquito Control and 3) dengue the
Thermal Fogging is the independent variable while the dengue rate is the dependent variable.
1.5 Scope and Delimitation
The researchers limit the study in a public school in Tubod Iligan City which is the south
one in order to make the research convenient. Having the opportunity to conduct this study in a
small area is a great privileged for the researchers yet it might take time to study and observe.
This study is only open for teachers of South 1-A Central School which is the respondents of the
study. The location of this study is Barangay Tubod Iligan City. The Survey will be conduct in the
month of November 3rd week. South 1-A Central School is one of the biggest public school in
Barangay Tubod, Iligan City and it is a place where big events in Baranagay Tubod is held for
example like mr. and miss tubod. The researchers choose this place to conduct the study because
South 1-A Central School conducted a thermal fogging to prevent the students from mosquitos.
1.6 Operational Definition of Terms
The following terms are defined operationally to have a clearer understanding of the study:
Thermal Fogging. It is a spraying method which kills mosquitos in order to achieve mosquito
control.
Dengue. It is the virus that can be acquired in mosquitos
Dengue cases. It refers to the rate of dengue victims.
Mosquito Control. This can be acquired by conducting thermal fogging.
Dengue outbreak. It means that mosquitos are increasing rapidly.
CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Introductory Paragraph
This chapter provides an overview of previous research on knowledge sharing and
intranets. It introduces the framework for the case study that comprises the main focus of the
research described in this thesis.
2.1 Foreign Literature
Effectively controlling mosquito populations entails far more than spraying, said Joe
Conlon, a technical advisor with the American Mosquito Control Association. Thermal fogging is
not enough to achieve the mosquito control. According to Joe Conlon you have to know where
the mosquito lay its egg, what it feeds on. You have to know everything possible about that
mosquito in order to effectively and efficiently control it. In the other countries they have a lot of
methods in mosquito control such as cold fogging method and mosquito traps.
2.3 Local Literature
In the Philippines aside from thermal fogging, the Filipinos are usually doing the fogging
which the burning of leaves. Also every month, each barangay is conducting clean up drive in
order to eliminate the habitats of the mosquito especially the places where mosquitos lay their
eggs like the “canal” and where the trash is being placed.
2.4 Foreign Studies
Evaluation of thermal fogging in mosquito control applications in temperate and desert
environments. Thermal fog aerosol dispersals of pesticides have been used against mosquitos
for half a century. Although the spraying technology has advantage and disadvantage. In this
study the researchers examine the impact of thermal fog applications malathion against Aedes in
the field in a warm temperate area of florida, followed by a similar test in a hot-dry desert area of
California. Patterns of mortality throughout 150 m x 150m grids of Aedes mosquitos indicate a
greater efficacy from the thermal fogging in both environments.
2.5 Local studies
According to M.S Mistica, the usefulness and sensitivity of the ovitrap technique in
monitoring Aedes( is a genus of mosquitoes originally found in tropical and subtropical zones, but
now found on all continents except Antarctica) population density was also determined. Thermal
fogging operations were done during the pre-dengue outbreak season. Thermal fogging was able
to sustainably reduce Aedes density by 46-56%.
2.6 Synthesis
With all the literature and studies presented, therefore the researchers conclude that
thermal fogging is an effective method in mosquito control even a warm places but is not enough
to overcome this problem, the people need to find its habitat and destroy especially in places
where they lay eggs. Thermal fogging can reduce the numbers of mosquitos or what we call
Aedes. In this case, the operating effects of fogging on non-target insects by direct counting of
knockdown in the insect population. Dengue control programs are mainly focused on thermal
fogging or space spraying to control adult Aedes mosquito vector population. Thermal fogging
may can severe effect on non-target insects but also this is useful to avoid mosquitoes.
CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY
3.3 Research Design
This study used quantitative design with Dichotomous questions. Quantitative research
methods describe and measure the level of occurrences on the basis of numbers and
calculations. Moreover, the questions of “how many?” and “how often?” are often asked in
quantitative studies. The researchers will use evaluation method instead of experiment method
because thermal fogging has been proven as one of the ways to reduce dengue carrying
mosquitos.
3.4 POPULATION AND SAMPLE OF THE STUDY
The target population for this research defined to include the students and teachers in
Iligan City, while the accessible population are the teachers in South 1-A Central School in
Barangay Tubod Iligan City. In this study, the accessible population comprised 100 respondents
within the area including the teachers.
3.4 Research instrument
The researchers will use the quantitative questionnaire to be answered by the respondents
which is the teachers of South 1-A Central School in Barangay Tubod Iligan City. Dichotomous
questions are the questions that will be use by the researchers. By this the researchers can
gather data and information based on the experience and opinion
3.5 Data Gathering procedures
The researchers will start the data gathering by consulting the authority handling the Practical
Research subject of Grade 12 Senior High School department of the said school for the conduct
of the said study and also to ask permission to conduct a survey to the people inside the school
to serve as the respondents. The researchers will personally conduct the survey inside the South
1-A Central School Barangay Tubod, Iligan City. The researchers will use the Solvin’s Formula to
calculate the statistical samples. The results of the data gathered will evaluate the effectiveness
of thermal fogging in reducing dengue carrying mosquitos.
The researchers themselves are the one who will distribute the questionnaires to the teachers
and students. The questionnaires will be gathered back and the researchers will tabulate it.
