Coeducation

‘Seeking knowledge is a duty upon every Muslim’, said Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). One
important conclusion can be drawn from this quote, is this that there is no mentioned of a
gender or sex. It means education is the right rather duty of every Muslim rather every
human being. Every era had its own ways of gaining knowledge and education. In this
modern era, it is the need of the time that both, male and female, should get education
together. It is mentioned but no where, not in any holy book that it is taboo to get education
and skills co-ed. Therefore, coeducation should not be considered taboo but helpful, if
acquired, under the fundamental values of Islam.
Man and woman are just like the two wheels of a motor bike. If either of the wheels doesn’t
work properly, journey is not possible through. Therefore, male and female must be given a
same platform to learn and acquire knowledge bases on their individual given or acquired
abilities. Women should also be given free hand to go whichever field they want to go given
that is under the boundary of Islamic basic principles. This attitude towards women, will
enhance pluralism in out society. Women must be considered as important as men to the
society because they have got the same abilities and resources of mind that they can also
pitch in in social, economical and political development. By dropping in developed society,
one would find gender equality in education, social status and social dealings.
In addition, there is famous quote from Aga khan III, the first president of all India Muslim
league. He said and i quote, ‘if you have to kids. A boy and a girl. And you can effort to
educate either of them, educate the girl.’. He was a visionary leader, indeed. If he said so, it
was out of so much experiences with the passage of time...
Coeducation could play many roles in our society and educational institutions. It can help
building confident in front of the opposite gender. Because you would have daily face to face
discussion upon various topics. But at the same time, it gives a tough time for healthy
competitions. Coeducation is the main thing there should be buckled down on. It is widely
caught on reality that society becomes developed and successful if both the genders play
their roles with dignity and right.
If one Muslim is the brother of another why not sisters are? If you could develop that if you
are my brother. In this respect, your sister is my sister. Coeducation can be used to improve
this concept of brotherhood, but at the same time sisterhood as well. Nobody dares to do
bad with his sister at all. The concept of coeducation can also pitch in to frown on the
importance and need of the notion of sisterhood in our society.
As the mater of the fact, Gender discrimination is one of the problems of modern times.
Coeducation could be used to, in a way, to wipe out the rogue concept of discrimination
from the society. Every human being is born with its own physical structure. Physical
appearance should not be a parameter for discrimination in society. Proper ethical
programme in coeducational institutions could be used to cure this endemic ill prevail in the
society.
In nutshell, there is no problem, at all, with coeducational institutions in our society. Both
the genders can pitch in according to their limits. Gender discrimination should be wipe out
from the society. In this case, coeducation can play the role. Everybody should be free to
wherever they want to go to get education. If the nature, created by God, is for all of us;
then why not man created things are? ‘Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave’ is for
all not for male only.
