0 EXPERIMENT PROCEDURE

3.1 APPARATUS & INSTRUMENT

Before conducting the experiment, our group was provided with the following apparatus &
instrument such as thermometer, beakers, Styrofoam cup, heater & three different metal slab;
aluminum, zinc and copper.

BEAKER Thermometer

Styrofoam cup
Metal Slab
3.2 PROCEDURE

1. Three metal samples are place into a beaker of water and heat it to at least 70 degree
Celsius. Little water was used as possible, making sure to completely cover all three
samples. (It does not need to boil!)
2. Measured mass of cold water is poured into each of the Styrofoam cups. The initial
temperature of water is measured.
3. The metal samples is quickly remove from the hot water and place them into separate
Styrofoam cups of water. (Initial temperature of the metal is measure by measuring the
temperature of the water. The metal is completely immersed.
4. The lid is place on the cup and waited for a few minutes for the water and metal to
achieve thermal equilibrium. Final temperature is measured.
5. Heat gained by water is determined which is equal to the heat lost by the metal.
6. The specific heat of the metal can be calculated after knowing the heat lost by the
metal, its mass and change in temperature.
7. Percent error is calculated and look u for the accepted value of specific heat.

3.3 EXPERIMENT PROCEDURE PROCESS

Based on the procedure, the weight of every each of metal slab which is aluminum,
zinc, and copper is needed to note down on the result table. While taking the weight of the metal
slab, we need to fill up the cold water from the tap into the heater and heat the water up above
70 degree Celsius. Then, the hot water from the heater is poured into the beaker. Three metal
sample is ready to place into the beaker and leave it for about few minutes.

Next, the mass of cold ta water is now measured and poured into three different
Styrofoam cups while the initial temperature of the water is measured & note down it into the
result table. After three metal sample is immersed into a hot water, the metal sample is place
into different Styrofoam cup of cold ta water and labelled it with name. Once the metal the metal
is completely immersed, the initial temperature of the metal is ready to be measured by
measuring the temperature of the water.
To prevent from the heat loss, the lid is place on the top of Styrofoam cup for a couple
of minutes for the metal to transfer the heat into the water. So, the system in the cup between
the metal and water will achieve the thermal equilibrium and finally the final temperature is ready
to be measured.
