Body (time: min)

Learning Activity #1: Instructor will give students numerous examples of descriptors to
describe their pets or a pet they wish they had. Instructor will then ask students descriptors
that they would use.

Learning Activity #2: Instructor will then have students copy out the prompt on the board and
then write three sentences on their own. Instructor will circulate to help. Journal pages will be
checked (and maybe clipped) before completion of the lesson.

Closure (time: min)

Feedback From Students on Learning: Instructor should have students read their
sentences through out loud before completion of lesson.

Transition To Next Lesson(s): Instructor should get student’s attention to reflect on the
activity. Instructor should reinforce to students that it is awesome to use reading and writing to
personally respond to prompts and that they can write about things that really interest them.
Students should put their journals away and get ready for recess.

Reflections on lesson:

This was one of my favourite lessons. The kids all came up with fun ideas about their pets (or
pets they would like to have) that I hadn’t even thought about. I love to read their personal
thoughts about things without having to worry about spelling and mechanics so much because
their personalities shine through.
