The International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education published an

article entitled “Use of Twitter across educational settings: a review of related literature”, by Agdas
Malik, Cassandra Heyman-Schrum and Aditya Johri. A Study that talks about the use of social
media particularly, the use of twitter for educational purposes across formal and informal settings.

As stated in the abstract of the article that social media particularly twitter is very useful in
the field of education. The authors discusses that twitter is useful for every students,
professionals, and other social media enthusiast because they use twitter to gain more efficient
information, to communicate, and to share perceptions in a certain topic. This study showed
positive side of twitter to education as well as the negative side. This article followed the PRISMA
statement (Preferred Reporting of Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) (Mother et
al.,2009) The researchers concluded that the use of twitter in educational purposes has a good
impact to both learners and professionals because it improves the learning capabilities, and
provides a connection with others to create or form a community. In short, the authors coincide
that the use of twitter has a good impact to both students and professionals when it comes in
educational settings.

The main idea of the study is well presented, the use of twitter for educational purposes
across formal and informal setting. The authors presented the data that talks about the social
media platform particularly about twitter. Twitter has been reported to increase learning
capabilities and communication (Bista 2015, Carpenter, 2014; DeGroot, Young, & VanSlette,
2015).

The use of methodology in the study was explained well they used data’s and flow charts
to present it well. Also, following PRISMA Statement to select the studies needed in the study that
can support to the authors.

Over all, the study was quite interesting because with the use of social media particularly
twitter, which is the fifth most popular social media platform among Americans according to the
recent study of Pew Research Center. The authors wrote this study because we all know that in
our generation today, social media platforms was quite important when it comes in the field of
education, authors wrote this to improve and generate a new way of teaching. Social media
particularly twitter enhance the teaching skills of the teachers and other professionals. Twitter
provides improving the skill set, communication with peers and teachers, to think critically, at the
same time learning having fun (Al Harbi, 2016, Becker & Bishop 2016; Bledsoe et al, 2014,
Kassens, 2014; West, Moore, & Barry, 2015) of the user of this platform. However, this platform
shows important and useful as an educational tool but everyone must be aware especially
students, we should planned in implementing this kind of thing.
