eration of support beam VS 45...

1.2 Operating manual Keep this operating manual in a safe place, accessible to personnel
at all times.
The operating manual is part of the package supplied and should be
read carefully prior to assembly, operation and maintenance .

1.3 Safety Never reach into the support beam when the machine is running.
instructions

Never touch the edges of moving webs.

2. Function
2.1 Type overview Support beams, type series VS 45.. are implemented in conjunction
with E+L web guiders. They position edge sensors at the web edge
or set position.
Support beam VS 45.. is available in three different versions:
VS 4515 with one drive unit and positioning carriage for positioning
one sensor.
- sensor following-up, e.g. for laminating control systems
- sensor positioning for places with difficult access
VS 4525 with one drive unit and two positioning carriages for posi-
tioning two sensors symmetrically to the machine center
(hybrid).
- sensor following-up for web center guiding in the case
of major web width fluctuations
VS 4535 with two drive units and two positioning carriages for po-
sitioning two sensors independently of one another.
- sensor following-up for web center guiding in the case
of major web width fluctuations

DC motors Position controller RK 4008

Positioning carriage Guide section Positioning carriage

The support beam comprises the following modules:

- one guide section
- one/two positioning carriages
- one/two DC motors
- one position controller RK 4008

2.3 Operating principle

2.3.1 VS 4515 Sensor following-up (edge search)
In edge search mode the positioning carriage follows up the web
edge depending on the sensor signal.
Edge search mode remains active until the web guider switches to
automatic mode or edge search mode is switched off. The position-
ing carriage is blocked in the current position via the "Automatic ON"
signal.
If edge search mode is started while the web guider is operating in
automatic mode, the latter will remain blocked until the web edge is
at the sensor zero point.

2.3.2 VS 4525 Symmetrical sensor following-up (hybrid)

This function is required when the web center is to be guided to
match the machine center.
Depending on the web position, in "hybrid" mode the positioning car-
riages move towards or away from each other in symmetry.
If both web edges leave the sensor scanning range, e.g. due to a
width change, the positioning carriages will be followed up symmetri-
cally.

C Page 3
Support beam VS 45..

2.3.3 VS 4535 Separate sensor follow-up (edge search)

This function is required if the center of a web is to be guided outwith
the machine center.
In edge search mode, each positioning carriage, depending on the
signal from the respective sensor, follows up the web edge.
The edge search function remains active until the web guider is
switched to automatic mode or the edge search function is switched
off. The positioning carriages are blocked in their current position by
the "Automatic ON" signal.
If edge search mode is started while the web guider is operating in
automatic mode, the latter is blocked until the web edge is located at
the sensor zero point.

2.3.4 VS 45.. Manual mode

Manual mode offers the option of moving one or two positioning car-
riages to a set position. Adjustment is by means of push buttons on
command station DO 2000 or via an interface.

3. Assembly Please observe the locally applicable and customary profes-

sional safety and accident prevention regulations.
Support beam VS 45.. should only be mounted by qualified or
suitably instructed personnel.

3.1 Support beam assembly

max. screwing-in depth X = 11 mm

C Page 4
Support beam VS 45..

 Mount the support beam on the machine with M 8 screws via slid-
ing blocks (see illustration on page 4; two options, vertical or hori-
zontal).
The maximum screwing-in depth (X) of the securing screws is
11 mm. The support beam must not be deformed during mounting.
Please refer to the attached dimensioned drawing for dimensions.
Please ensure that no interfering edges are located in the sensor
positioning area.

3.2 Sensor assembly Mount sensors on the positioning carriages via sensor holders and
align symmetrically to the support beam center. In the case of infra-
red edge sensors alignment with the reflector should also be checked
and set.

4. Installation Please observe the locally applicable and customary profes-

sional safety and accident prevention regulations!
Support beam VS 45.. should be installed by qualified person-
nel only.
 Run leads according to the attached wiring diagram.
 Shield and run signal leads away from heavy current-carrying
leads.
 Please ensure that the cables on the sensors are secure (twist
lock closed) and a grounding lead connected.

5. Maintenance Maintenance should only be performed when the processing

machine is switched off.
Support beam VS 45.. should be maintained by qualified or
suitably instructed personnel only.
 Clean the support beam regularly to remove lint and soiling. De-
pending on the ambient conditions, the support beam may have to
be vacuumed with an industrial cleaner or similar.
 Clean the sensor and reflector lenses.

6. Repair Repairs may only be performed when the processing ma-

chine is switched off.
Support beam VS 45.. should only be repaired by qualified or
suitably instructed personnel.
If the toothed belt is slackened during repair, please proceed as fol-
lows before tightening:
Power must be supplied to the support beam.
 Screw off the retaining plates (see page 5, illustration on right) at
the ends of the cover strip in order to access the toothed belt.
Be careful when handling the cover strip: sharp edges!
 Screw off the sensor holder and push together with the sensors to
the center.
 Loosen lock nuts (see illustration on left) until the toothed belt may
be freely moved over the DC motor belt pulley.
 Activate setting aid: set parameter 127 to value 10
set parameter 126 from 0 to 1
By setting parameter 126 the support motors move to a zero index
Lock nuts value and are blocked.

 Move the positioning carriages manually to the specified X and Y

dimension (see illustration above). To do so the toothed belt must
be pushed by hand over the DC motor belt pulley:
Distance X: 256 mm < X < 263 mm
Distance Y: 291 mm < Y < 298 mm
This dimension must be observed exactly as otherwise the index
pulse will not be generated in the range (≤1 cm) of the outer me-
chanical limit stop.
 Tighten toothed belt.
 After tightening the toothed belt check the distance X or Y again
and correct as required.
 Deactivate the setting aid: set parameter 126 from 1 to 0.
 Screw cover strip tight on the ends.
 Mount sensor holder and align sensors.
 Perform calibration run.
The index pulse should now be generated in the range (≤1 cm) of
the outer mechanical limit stop.
