He took the Chairmanship of Tata group in
1991, his Charismatic, disciplined and forward
looking leadership over the next 21 years , led
the Tata Group to new heights of achievement,
expansion and modernisation. During his
leadership, Tata Group’s revenues grew over 40
times, and profit, over 50 times.
Achievement: Honoured with Padma Bhushan, one of the highest Civilian
awards in 2000.

Ratan Tata’s Vision made the core competence of Tata Group to diversify in
different business portfolios like Tata Steel, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata

Under his leadership, Tata acquired 32 companies worldwide.

Ratan Tata used his excellent innovative vision in Titan Edge watches, which
developed the thinnest watch in the world and in Nano, the cheapest car in the
world, which he created for masses.
Created low cost water purifier, which operates without electricity, called Tata
Swatch for rural people.

Tata motors acquired Jaguar and Land Rover deal. At the time of acquisition the
demand for both the brands were low, business analysts declared that it would
be a loss for Tata Groups. However, Ratan Tata proved it wrong and both the
companies did well.

The leadership qualities of Ratan Tata are coupled with his commitment to social
service, justice and responsibility. He holds the Chairmanship of the Tata Trusts
and is known to promote financial transparency.
Ratan Tata hold a strong belief of giving wealth back to the people, nearly 60-
65% of the wealth that Tata Group has created from his companies goes back to
people in the form of education, medical services and rural development.

At the age of 75, Ratan Tata mentored and coached Cyrus Mistry to take upon
Chairmanship of Tata and Group. After serving 4 years as Chairman Cyrus Mistry
was removed from the position by the board of management.

Ratan Tata showed that he is excellent at crisis management, even at the age he
took upon the responsibility, served as interim chairperson, and took the
company out of the crisis.
Negative Personality Attributes Analysis
Imbalance between people and task orientation.
Initially in his career, Ratan Tata faced two failures as Director in charge for
Empress Mills and NRECO (National Radio and Electronics Company) both closed
down due to economic challenges. These failures faced by Ratan Tata was due to
giving more importance to people and less task-oriented. These initial lessons
made him adopt a balance as leader, which contributed to his future success.
