Raw-water Intake

This is a tower type intake, comprises with two intake channels, each channel, equipped with two
screens [coarse (slot-25mm) & fine screens (slot -5mm)] at Namkhan 2 River.

Design demand = 9,500 m3/day

No. of operational hours = 22 hrs

No. of pumps in operation = 3 Nos.

No. of stand-by pumps = 1 No.

Low-water level = 317.9 m

Minimum water depth of the river 0.7 m

Height between LWL and FSL = 2100 mm

Slot size of small screen = 5 mm

percentage of blockage = 50 %

No. of inlet channels = 2 Nos.

Angle of screens (to the

75 deg.
Horizontal) =

Design of channel width

Size of SS plate (Used for screen) 4 mm

Proposed with of screen = 1.2 m

Open area of screen for 1m span 0.47 m2

Therefore average flow velocity = 0.26 m/s

Maximum flow velocity = 0.51 m/s

Maximum flow velocity applies during the cleaning of one channel. Therefore 1m width
two channels are adequate for the purpose.

Length of screen = 3.21 m

Make two pieces of screen for easy handling

Intake channels & intake well will be connected through two pipes.

Assume pipe diameter = 300 mm

Average velocity of pipe = 0.85 m/s

Maximum velocity of pipe = 1.70 m/s

Hence selected pipe diameter OK

Sizing of Rectangular Intake Well

Proposed length = 6 m

Proposed width = 3 m

Submersible pumps will be installed inside the intake well with guide-rails. Electrical
panel boards will be installed in the pump house, constructed on the intake well.
However floor of the pump house must be located above the maximum flood level.
