the sea of my ancestors
the guardians are everyone
not alone the sea gypsies
with the warriors they protect
they are amphibians
who will fight.

I am sick of the opportunists


loving my sea is not about race
it is about my pride and heritage
no one else will gonna love as I do
except those are truthfully true
from the blood of martyrs
they were born to set you free.

The Wedding Dance

Awiyao and Lumnay is a long married couple from the Mountain tribes. Awiyao is going to marry another
woman, Madulimay, because Lumnay was not able to give him a child.Awiyao went back home to see
Lumnay because he didn't and her among the dancers at his wedding. He wanted Lumnay to dance at
his wedding for the last time but she cannot. in their moment, there are many flashbacks about how
Lumnay did her best to have a child,through offering to the god, abunyans and how Awiyao and
Lumnay's love was as strong as the rivers but it is and just that a man must have a child, and he had to
leave her. He promised her that if he fails to have a child, he will come back to her. The wanted to
protest against the written rule that a man can marry another woman, so Lumnay went to the wedding
dance. but while seeing her husband married to another woman, she couldn't take it anymore and just
went to the mountain to clear away the beans she had thought about. And so Lumnay, waiting for
Awiyao a long time, thought of Awiyao's promise as she cleared away the growing bean plants.

Mula nang dumating si Fely kangina ay hindi miminsang narinig niya ang tanong naiyon na tila ngayon
lamang siya nakita. Gayong umuuwi siya dalawang ulit sa isang taon –kung Araw ng mga Patay at kung
Pasko. O napakadalang nga iyon, bulong niya sa sarili. Atmaging sa mga sandaling ito na wala nang
kumikibo sa tumitingin sa kanya ay iyon din angkatanungang wari ay nababasa niya sa bawat mukha,
sa bawat tingin, sa bawat matimpingngiting may lakip na lihim na sulyap.At mula sa salamin sa kanyang
harapan ay nakita niya si Nana Ibang sa kanyanglikuran. Hinahagod ng tingin ang kanyang kaanyuan.
Matagl na pinagmasdan ang kanyangbuhok. Hindi ito makapaniwala nang sabihin niyang serbesa ang
ipinambasa sa buhok niyabago iyon sinuklay. Nandidilat si Nana Ibang nang ulitin ang tanong. “Serbesa
ba ‘kamo, bata ka, ha?” Ngumiti siya kasabay ang mahinang tango. At nang Makita niyang nangunot
ang noonito, idinugtong niya ang paliwanang. “Hindi masama’ng amoy, Nana” Ngayon, sa kanyang
pandinig ay hindi nakaila sa kanya ang pagtuon ng tingin nito sakanyang suot. Sa leeg ng kanyang terno
na halos ay nakasabit lamang sa gilid ng kanyangbalikat at tila nanunuksong pinipigil ang pagsungaw ng
kanyang malusog na dibdib. Sakanyang baywang na lalong pinalantik ng lapat na lapat na saya. Sa

mo…matalino…” “Sinabi ko naman sa Inso…ibigay na sa ‘kin papag-aralin ko sa Maynila. Nag-
iisannaman ako. Ang hirap sa kanila…ayaw nilang maghiwa-hiwalay. Kung sinunod ko ang gustoni
Inang…noon…kung natakot ako sa iyakan…” Tumigil siya sa pagsasalita. Alam niyanghindi maikukubli
ng kanyang tinig ang kapaitang naghihimagsik sa kanyang dibdib. “Tigas nga naming iyakan nang
lumuwas ka…” ayon ni Nana Ibang.

BUOD NG OF BIAG NI LAM-ANG

(SUMMARY OF BIAG NI LAM-ANG)

Don Juan and his wife Namongan lived in Nalbuan, now part of La Union in the northern part of the
Philippines. They had a son named Lam-ang. Before Lam-ang was born, Don Juan went to the
mountains in order to punish a group of their Igorot enemies. While he was away, his son Lam-ang was
born. It took four people to help Namongan give birth. As soon as the baby boy popped out, he spoke
and asked that he be given the name Lam-ang. He also chose his godparents and asked where his
father was.

After nine months of waiting for his father to return, Lam-ang decided he would go look for
him. Namongan thought Lam-ang was up to the challenge but she was sad to let him go.

During his exhausting journey, he decided to rest for awhile. He fell asleep and had a dream about his
father’s head being stuck on a pole by the Igorot. Lam-ang was furious when he learned what had
happened to his father. He rushed to their village and killed them all, except for one whom he let go so
that he could tell other people about Lam-ang’s greatness.

Upon returning to Nalbuan in triumph, he was bathed by women in the Amburayan river. All the fish died
because of the dirt and odor from Lam-ang’s body.

There was a young woman named Ines Kannoyan whom Lam-ang wanted to woo. She lived in
Calanutian and he brought along his white rooster and gray dog to visit her. On the way, Lam-ang met
his enemy Sumarang, another suitor of Ines whom he fought and readily defeated.

Lam-ang found the house of Ines surrounded by many suitors all of whom were trying to catch her
attention. He had his rooster crow, which caused a nearby house to fall. This made Ines look out. He
had his dog bark and in an instant the fallen house rose up again. The girl’s parents witnessed this and
called for him. The rooster expressed the love of Lam-ang. The parents agreed to a marriage with their
daughter if Lam-ang would give them a dowry valued at double their wealth. Lam-ang had no problem
fulfilling this condition and he and Ines were married.
It was a tradition to have a newly married man swim in the river for the rarang fish. Unfortunately, Lam-
ang dove straight into the mouth of the water monster Berkakan. Ines had Marcos get his bones, which
she covered with a piece of cloth. His rooster crowed and his dog barked and slowly the bones started to
move. Back alive, Lam-ang and his wife lived happily ever after with his white rooster and gray dog.

Sa kabundukan ng Sierra Madre, 1944, kumatok sa pinto ni Tata Matyas ang guerilyang
siMando Plaridel kasama ang mga kasamang sina Martin at Karyo. Si Tata Matyas, na
datingrebolusyonaryo at nanirhan sa isang kubo sa bulubundukin ng Sierra Madre, ay ang puntahanat
tuluyan ng mga guerilyang lumalaban sa mga Hapon katulad ni Mando. Doon sa
kubonalaman ni Mando na totoo ang mga pangyayari at katauhan sa mga nobela ni i!al na "oli MeTangere at #l

Tungkung Langit and Alunsina by Rene Villanueva

In the beginning everything was shapeless and formless. The earth, the sky, the sea, and the air were
almost mixed up. In a word, there was only confusion. Then from the depth of this formless void there
appeared the god Tungkung Langit and the goddess Alunsina.

It was not known just where these two deities came from but it is related by old Bisayan folk that
Tungkung Langit fell in love with Alunsina. After he had courted her for many years, they married and
made their home in the highest part of heaven.

There the water was always warm and the breeze was forever cool. In this place order and regularity
began.

Tungkung Langit was a loving, hard-working god. He wanted to impose order over the confused world.
He decided to arrange the world so that the heavenly bodies would move regularly. On the other hand,
Alunsina was a lazy, jealous, selfish goddess. She sat at the window all day doing nothing.

Sometimes she would leave her home, sit down by a pool near the door, and comb her long, jet-black
hair all day long. One day Tungkung Langit told his wife that he would be away for some time. He said
he must make time go on smoothly and arrange everything in the world.

When he was gone, Alunsina set the breeze to spy on Tungkung Langit. Tungkung Langit found this out
and he became very angry. After he returned home, he told her that it was ungodly of her to be jealous
since there were no other gods in the world except the two of them.

Alunsina resented this reproach, and they quarreled. In his anger, Tungkung Langit drove his wife away.
No one knew where she went. Several days later, Tungkung Langit felt very lonely. He realized that he
should not have lost his temper. But it was too late.

Once vibrant with Alunsina’s sweet voice, his home became cold and desolate. In the morning when he
woke up, he would find himself alone. In the afternoon when he came home, he would feel loneliness
creeping deep or soothe his aching limbs.

For months Tungkung Langit lived in utter desolation. Try as he did he could not find Alunsina. And so in
his desperation, he decided to do something to forget his sorrow. The sight of the lonely sea and the
barren land irritated him. So he came down to earth and planted trees and flowers. Then he took his
wife’s jewels and scattered them in the sky. He hoped that when Alunsina should see them she might be
induced to return home.

Alunsina’s necklace became the stars, her comb the moon, and her crown the sun. But in spite of these,
Alunsina did not return home. Up to this time, the old folk say Tungkung Langit lives alone in his palace
in the skies. Sometimes, he would cry out his pent-up emotions and his tears would fall down upon the
earth. The people say that rain is Tungkung Langit’s tears.
When the thunder rolls, the old folks say that it is Tungkung Langit sobbing, calling for his beloved
Alunsina to come back – entreating her so hard that his voice reverberates across the fields and
countryside.

The Flood Story

A long time ago there was a very big crab which crawled into the sea. And when he went in he crowded
the water out so that it ran all over the earth and covered all the land.

Now about one moon before this happened, a wise man had told the people that they must build a large
raft. They did as he commanded and cut many large trees, until they had enough to make three layers.
These they bound tightly together, and when it was done they fastened the raft with a long rattan cord to
a big pole in the earth.

Soon after this the floods came. White water poured out of the hills, and the sea rose and covered even
the highest mountains. The people and animals on the raft were safe, but all the others drowned.

When the waters went down and the raft was again on the ground, it was near their old home, for the
rattan cord had held.

But these were the only people left on the whole earth.

sambit niya human gibuga ang aso
gikan sa iyang sigarilyo,
bisyo nga wa nako tuguti

Tubag nako, dayon amin.
Gahulat na ang traysikel nga akong sakyan
padulong kanto,
padulong sa dapit nga layo
sa iyang mga aso.

magpabilin gihapon ang baho.

mga dambuhalang ibon at mababangis na hayop sa ibang panig ng Mindanao. Labis niyang
ikinalungkot ang mga nangyayaring ito sa mga naninirahan sa labas ng kaharian ng Mantapuli.
Ipinatawag ni Indarapatra ang kanyang kapatid na si Sulayman, isang matapang na kawal. Inutusan ni
Indarapatra si Sulayman upang puksain ang mga ibon at hayop na namiminsala sa mga tao. Agad na
sumunod si Sulayman. Bago umalis si Sulayman, nagtanim si Indarapatra ng halawan sa may
durungawan. Aniya kay Sulayman, "Sa pamamagitan ng halamang ito ay malalaman ko ang nangyayari
sa iyo. Kapag namatay ang halamang ito, nanganaghulugang ikaw ay namatay."

Sumakay si Sulayman sa hangin. Narating niya ang Kabilalan. Wala siyang nakitang tao. Walang anu-
ano ay nayanig ang lupa, kaya pala ay dumating ang halimaw na si Kurita. Matagal at madugo ang
paglalaban ni Sulayman at ni Kurita. Sa wakas, napatay rin ni Sulayman si Kurita, sa tulong ng kanyang
kris. Nagtungo naman si Sulayman sa Matutum. Kanyang hinanap ang halimaw na kumakain ng tao, na
kilala sa tawag na Tarabusaw. Hinagupit nang hinagupit ni Tarabusaw si Sulayman sa pamamagitan ng
punongkahoy. Nang nanlalata na si Tarabusaw ay saka ito sinaksak ni Sulayman ng kanyang espada.

Pumunta si Sulayman sa Bundok ng Bita. Wala rin siyang makitang tao. Ang iba ay nakain na ng mga
halimaw at ang natirang iba ay nasa taguan. Luminga-linga pa si Sulayman nang biglang magdilim
pagkat dumating ang dambuhalang ibong Pah. Si Sulayman ang nais dagitin ng ibon. Mabilis at ubos
lakas ng tinaga ito ni Sulayman. Bumagsak at namatay ang Pah. Sa kasamaang palad nabagsakan ng
pakpak ng ibon si Sulayman na siya niyang ikinamatay.Samantala, ang halaman ni Sulayman sa
Mantapuli ay laging pinagmamasdan ni Indarapatra. Napansin niyang nanlata ang halaman at alam
niyang namatay si Sulayman.

Hinanap ni Indarapatra ang kanyang kapatid. Nagpunta siya sa Kabalalan at nakita niya ang kalansay
ni Tarabusaw. Alam niyang napatay ito ng kapatid niya. Ipinagpatuloy ni Indarapatra ang paghahanap
niya kay Sulayman. Narating niya ang bundok ng Bita. Nakita niya ang patay na ibong Pah. Inangat ni
Indarapatra ang pakpak ng ibon at nakita ang bangkay ni Sulayman. Nanangis si Indarapatra at
nagdasal upang pabaliking muli ang buhay ni Sulayman. Sa di kalayua'y may nakita siyang banga ng
tubig. Winisikan niya ng tubig ang bangkay at muling nabuhay si Sulayman. Parang nagising lamang
ito mula sa mahimbing na pagtulog. Nagyakap ang magkapatid dahil sa malaking katuwaan.

Pinauwi na ni Indarapatra si Sulayman. Nagtuloy pa si Indarapatra sa Bundok Gurayu. Dito'y wala ring
natagpuang tao. Nakita niya ang kinatatakutang ibong may pitong ulo. Sa tulong ng kanyang
engkantadong sibat na si juris pakal ay madali niyang napatay ang ibon. Hinanap niya ang mga tao.
May nakita siyang isang magandang dalaga na kumukuha ng tubig sa sapa. Mabilis naman itong
nakapagtago. Isang matandang babae ang lumabas sa taguan at nakipag-usap kay Indarapatra.
Ipinagsama ng matandang babae si Indarapatra sa yungib na pinagtataguan ng lahat ng tao sa pook na
iyon. Ibinalita ni Indarapatra ang mga pakikilaban nilang dalawa ni Sulayman sa mga halimaw at
dambuhalang ibon. Sinabi rin niyang maaari na silang lumabas sa kanilang pinagtataguan. Sa laki ng
pasasalamat ng buong tribu, ipinakasal kay Indarapatra ang anak ng hari, ang magandang babaeng
nakita ni Indarapatra sa batisan.

SOLEDAD

It was a sacrilege, the neighbors cried,


The way she shattered every mullioned pane
To let a firebrand in. They tried in vain
To understand how one so carved from pride
And glassed in dream could have so flung aside
Her graven days, or why she dared profane
The bread and wine of life for some insane
Moment with him. The scandal never died.

But no one guessed that loveliness would claim


Her soul’s cathedral burned by his desires
Or that he left her aureoled in flame…
And seeing nothing but her blackened spires,
The town condemned this girl who loved too well
and found her heaven in the depths of hell.
