386 Event 3

For my third 386 Event I decided to volunteer at Webber Night Out. Right off the bat the

volunteer coordinator put in to work at the front table with the band teacher, Ms. Wheeler. Ms.

Wheeler collected money from the students as they walked in the door, and I stamped their hands.

Although this was a simple task, I was quite impressed by Ms. Wheeler’s ability to make something so

mundane fun for the kids. The relationships she had with each student clearly showed through. With

every student, she would say their name (if she knew it) and something kind, personal, or crack a joke.

She did not over look a single student. Because of this, every student began the night with a positive

welcoming interaction. I was very impressed because before we had opened the doors, she was telling

me how tired she was and what a crazy week it was, and yet despite all that, she decided to put those

feelings aside and be present and positive with the students (even on a Friday night spent at the

school!).

This is something I hope to incorporate into my teaching, emotional constancy! I truly believe

students feed off of our energy and are great at picking it up too! I remember being a student and

having those teachers that were so unpredictable. I wouldn’t know what to expect each morning as I

walked into their class, and I could only hope they would be in a positive mood. Being an overly

emotional teenager, sometimes if a teacher was grumpy it would ruin my whole day! I simply don’t want

to be that kind of teacher, but rather the type of teacher who keeps a positive attitude for my students,

like Ms. Wheeler!
