Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Google Maps will be used to track to progress of the butterflies
in relation to where we live. Students can use electronic translators to communicate better with
Mexico students.

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher should start the lesson by asking if anyone understands how butterflies grow into
butterflies. Let the students try to answer and then explain how and show a video explaining how.
Then show the students we have caterpillars of our own that we are going to release. Then explain
the butterflies travel all over the world and the butterflies that we see are the same butterflies that
other students see in Mexico. This can spark a since of connection with other students from different
schools and countries. Students will be writing, drawing, and making butterflies to send to our fellow
students in Mexico. We will add our class to the map so we can see how far our butterflies will travel
and where they migrate after they leave our school. When we receive butterflies from our peers in
Mexico, we will mark them on the map so they can see of far their butterflies traveled.

This will take 45 minutes when first introduced and 45 minutes when we receive butterflies from
Mexico. A few minutes out of each day can be taken to check the map. The writing will be graded to
see if they understand the life cycle of the butterfly and if they know the direction of their migration.
Their drawings and creations of butterflies will be graded on completion. When the lesson is
complete, we will look at the map as a whole and focus on all the locations butterflies migrate not
just our own.

Reflective Practice: Students will now understand not only the life cycle of a butterfly and their
migration, but their new connection with a different culture in Mexico. This activity lets children
experience real life and hands on activities. To add more technology, we could maybe send a video to
the classroom in Mexico saying hello in our language and theirs.
