DESCRIBE THE PRESENT# •o ORIGINAL (If know11) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

Mulbery Grove is composed of four sections. The east

facade has a telescopic arrangement of three sections, and
then, there is a small wing with hyphen to the west.
The taller section is two storys and possesses an in-
terior chimney with the back of the firebox exposed on the
north able. It was built after 1863.(see: Laskowski
Papers It appears to be composed of a single room on each
floor. The walls are covered with weatherboard, typical
of the late 19th century, and the windows have 6/6 sash.
Earlier than the other sections, the center portion
is one and one-half storys tall and is also a framed build-
ing, but its south gable is built of brick, like Bounds
Lott, Wicomico County. The east facade, beneath the scre-
ened porch, has a single window with 1/1 sash and a door.
An 11 A11 roof dormer and a shed dor'ID.er connected to the two m
story portion are built on the east side of the steeply
pitched ''A 11 roof; there are two dor·mers on the west side. m
To the west of the central portion, and set at right angles -
thereto is a hyphen and wing. The latter stands on a tall .z
brick basement and is about three feet higher than the
main house. Within its west gable is a brick chimney.
North of the chimney is a narrow window with 4/4 sash and
flanking the chimney on the second story are 4-pane case-
ments. On each side of the 11 A11 roof is a narrow dor'ID.er c:
with 4/2 sash, but on the first story, beneath the dor'ID.ers n
are larger windows with 6/6 sash and original paneled -f
shutters.
The smallest portion of the telescopic house is one -
0
story tall. It, too, is frame and the south gable has been
reconstructed and faced with old brick. Originally there :z
were very small windows in the kitchen, but new ones have
been added to bring in the light. A bay window was instal-
led on the west side and looks across the field toward the ·
Bay.
East of the house and on the north side of the yard,
which looks toward Oyster Cove, are some barns. One is of
interest because it is half granary and half storage beneath
an 11 A'' roof. A leanto was added on each side since its
construction which is as indicative of the vernacular trad-
ition as is the house itself. A privy which for'ID.erly stood
on the far'ID. is now located across the creek at Oyster Creek
Far·m. And, an old school building is now located at Grace
Church, nearby .

STATEMENT OF SICONIFICANCE

Architecturally, Mulberry Grove is of importance

because it represents a late example of telescopic struc-
ture. Also, the placement of the west wing is unique
:z for a telescopic structure. If such exists, it is usually
0 behind the lower portion.
-1- Thomas Patteson came to Dorchester County in 1671
u from Calvert County. He acquired property on James Island
_:>
and later Taylor's Island. The present Mulberry Grove
was part of that property and was called ''Dover''. Its
2:: present name comes from the fact that a grove of mulberry
I- trees were planted in order to raise silkworms late in
the 18th century.
:z
- The property appears to be the highest ground on
Taylor's Island.
