Promises to Future Students
1. I promise to strive to make content relevant to students’ lives. I envision this by incorporating
student interests through cultural and pop-cultural connections to content. This is a culturally
sustaining practice that will ensure engagement and effective learning.
2. I promise to develop activities and assignments that are purposeful. I envision this by intricately
creating or sourcing assignments with student perspective in mind, such as work balance and
life events. This is in accordance with creating a constructive classroom community that
considers student needs.
3. I promise to assess fairly and read work generously. I envision this by remaining unbiased
towards all students and approaching grading with a growth-mindset. This is a practice that
ensures equity to students of differing linguistic backgrounds and performance abilities.
4. I promise to instill valuation of student voice. I envision this by encouraging students to develop
and vocalize opinions as a part of lesson plans. This is essential to the student-teacher dialogic
teaching method.
5. I promise to treat students as an equally important part of the classroom process. I envision this
by integrating student-led activities and assessments. This is an element of the qualitative
approach to instruction.
6. I promise to design a classroom that is community-based, not control based. I envision this by
fostering collaboration and integrating collective-based activities. This is an example of the
designer-approach in education in creating a classroom space which embraces cultures and
possibilities.
7. I promise to allow students the opportunity to share and apply their funds of knowledge. I
envision this by incorporating activities that call for students to bring their schema and culture
to the forefront. This is a critical part of connecting students’ worlds and the classroom.
8. I promise to challenge students to consider and grow from different perspectives and cultures. I
envision this by developing activities that foster open-mindedness and reasoning through
recognition and praising of diversity. This is an application of the ELD/ELA framework calling for
options for perception for students.
