V5812G

1 Product Overview
V5812G is a compact GPON Optical Line Terminal (OLT) with a height of only 1U. This sys-
tem is suitable for access lines used for Ethernet leased line services.

The GPON technology adds new features and functionality targeted at improving perform-
ance and interoperability, and adds support for new applications, services, and deployment
scenarios. Among these changes are improvements in data rate and reach performance,
diagnostics, and stand-by mode, to name a few.

The V5812G introduces a point-to-multipoint concept with the GPON technology, which en-
ables a cost-effective FTTx service. The reason why GPON is considered as a cost-
effective solution is its usage of a passive splitter rather than an active switching system.

The benefits of the passive splitter are as follows:

• No power supply / maintenance is needed.
• The splitter does not need any fiber optic transceiver. The number of fiber optic
transceivers in the network is minimized.

The V5812G provides four GPON ports on the front panel, each delivering 2.488Gbps
downstream and 1.244Gbps upstream. Each GPON port supports a pluggable SFP laser
module that allows selection of the best speed and power to meet network requirements. It
is comprised of 8 electrical and optical combo GE interfaces as uplink towards the core
network and these interfaces can be used either to cascade other switches or to connect to
a collocated DSLAM. The MGMT and console interface is located on the most left of the
front panel with embedded LED for LNK/ACT and TX/RX indication respectively. They are
for use of equipment management via remote access or CLI.

1.1 System Architecture

V5812G is a compact GPON Optical Line Terminal (OLT) that is comprised of GPON OLT
4-port modules with SFP GPON OLT transceiver. Up to four GPON links can be serviced
through the development system’s 8 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces as combo uplink ports. You
can use an uplink interface as an optical (1000Base-X, SFP) port or electrical
(10/100/1000Base-T, RJ45) port depending on the type of network it connected to..

With performance of a non-blocking switching capacity of up to 36 Gbps switching capacity

and 26.8 Mpps throughput, the V5812G provides high speed networking environment.

For GPON, the PON layer is terminated on the interface unit and translated to Ethernet up-
link to be transported through an Ethernet/IP environment. For improved system reliability, it
adopts the design of redundancy architecture with dual power supplies.

The power feeding of the V5812G is provided by Power Supply Unit (PSU). Dual PSUs can
be installed to guarantee constant system running. If power A’s input fails, the system can
be automatically switched to the other power B’s input and normal operations of the system
are not affected.

1.2 Service Scenario

A PON consists of an Optical Line Termination (OLT) located at the Central Office and a set
of Optical Network Units (ONUs) or Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) located at the cus-
tomer’s premises. Between them is the optical distribution network (ODN) comprising of fi-
bers and passive optical splitters or couplers. A splitter is a device that divides an optical
signal into two or more signals. OLT connects the PON to the IP network, controls and
manages the PON clients. ONU (ONT) connects the user specific network to PON. The
ONT can be occupied by a single subscriber and also can be a gateway of the local net-
work.

The V5812G is a network element, which includes the necessary service adaptation func-
tions to support the delivery of all types multiple services, such as Ethernet, IP telephony,
and video services.

The V5812G GPON OLT system is one element of this end-to-end solution, however
Dasan Networks is able to provide the complete next generation broadband access net-
work and video integration solution, where full interoperability is ensured. Up to 64 termina-
tion points for GPON can be attached to an OLT via passive optical splitter.

There are different possible deployment topologies for GPON networks, which differentiate
from each other basically from the place the optical fiber is terminated. Depending on the
subscriber type and desired topology to the network, the operator may adopt: FTTH (fiber
to the Home), FTTB (fiber to the Building), FTTN (fiber to the neighborhood) or FTTC (fiber
to the Curb). In case of very high bandwidth requirement per user, scenarios without split-
ters offering 2.5Gbps/1.25Gbps (downstream/upstream) data rate can also be deployed by
connecting only the single user on a GPON port.

Table 5 V5812G Features and Benefits

2.1 GPON Functionality

The Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (GPON) is a high-speed optical access
method that has been defined in ITU-T Recommendation G.984. GPON carries a two-fold
promise of both higher bit rates and higher efficiency when carrying multiple services over
the PON.

GPON system of V5812G provides the network services at no extra cost, while EPON sys-
tems require additional adaptation equipment for TDM. It also offers much more available
bandwidth for the entire range of applications. The V5812G introduces a point-to-multipoint
concept with the several GPON mechanisms, which enable the efficient and flexible FTTx
services.

PON Benefits The PON provides the following advantages in general:

♦ Minimal maintenance (only passive splitter)
♦ Low deployment and maintenance costs
♦ High scalability of full-service solutions
♦ Deployments of FTTx environments
♦ Savings in the fiber infrastructure due to the lowest number of fibers required

GPON Benefits The GPON provides the following advantages in specific:

♦ Support a very high fiber splitting factor of up 1:64 (max. 1:128)
♦ Support a very high bandwidth (bit rate up to 2.5Gbit/s for DS)
♦ Use in multi-service applications such as data/video/voice (most flexible payload con-
cept)
♦ In the GPON TC layer, the maximum logical reach is defined as 60km
♦ ONU Activation (Discovery & Ranging)
♦ Embedded OAM messages (PLOAM)
♦ Standardized:

- Forward Error Correction (FEC) on Downstream/Upstream
- Fiber protection between the OLT and the splitter

GPON Features V5812G provides the following GPON features.

ONT Management over OMCI

OMCI, an ONT management and control interface protocol defined in ITU-T G.984.4, speci-
fies the format of interactive messages, and the mechanism of information exchange be-
tween an OLT and ONT. Based on the OMCI protocol, GPON terminal management en-
ables an OAM service to provide a standard way to discover ONT capabilities, and to man-
age and control them. OMCI operates on a dedicated bidirectional Port-ID between the
management station and the ONT. In addition, OMCI subdivides the ONT service module,
and defines a series of management entities used for service description.

The V5812G manages and configures various GPON terminals such as ONTs and ONUs
through the OMCI protocol. It provides MIB access that replicates the OLT information da-
tabase and connected ONTs. The management information from/to OLT and connected
ONTs flow is exchanged via an OMCI channel. Besides the OMCI, GPON provides a low
level communication channel to manage physical level issues and the GPON link layer
(GTC). The ONTs send upstream a PLOAM message with the serial number of the ONT.
Both PLOAM and OMCI channel provide full control of the optical network and the man-
agement of the customers’ ONTs.

User Data Encapsulation

GPON Encapsulation Method (GEM) is a scheme of encapsulating user frame data for
transport of the GPON network. Although any type of data can be encapsulated, actual
types depend on service situation.

The GEM protocol is used to provide delineation of the user data frames inside the GPON
partitions and the port identification for multiplexing. It can also permit fragmentation of
frames over partition boundaries.

Extended Reach GPON

Extended Reach GPON offers a clear deployment advantage that allows service providers
to dramatically increase their serving areas. V5812G GPON is especially useful for service
providers that operate in rural areas. The logical reach of the GPON is 60 km but, with the
current price point for laser transceivers, most GPON vendors limit the physical reach of
their GPON product to 20 km for a highly efficient ranging and bandwidth granting proce-
dure. The service providers can address subscribers beyond the 20 km serving-area radius
that had formerly limited the technology, without the expense of constructing and powering
remote cabinets. This is especially beneficial to service providers operating in low-density
areas.

With no additional outside plant investment, a provider can offer virtually all customers the
same high-bandwidth fiber services while minimizing the costs.

Data Sheet
V5812G

PON Aware QoS

QoS schemes in a GPON network, ONT plays a key role in ensuring QoS for all traffic be-
cause it is the ingress/egress point for all network traffic. The ONT can have different types
of service ports, including one or more analog voice ports and one or more Ethernet ports.
It can also perform service classification based on the physical port and map it to 802.1p p-
bits. Traffic flows from voice ports, for example, can be classified as highest priority.

As part of this service differentiation, the ONT associates different traffic flows with a spe-
cific GPON Encapsulation Method (GEM) Port ID. Each physical port in a given ONT can
have a maximum of eight GEM-ports. 802.1p allows a maximum of eight classes of service
(CoS) based on p-bit marking. The GEM-Port IDs and the p-bit marking together define a
specific service.

The GPON upstream QoS provides the following advantages in specific:

♦ Bandwidth grant is out-of-band (No effect on revenue BW)
♦ SLA based on T-CONT
- No BW effect with having T-CONT per service per ONT
♦ Supports fragmented payloads (good for delay and efficiency)

2.2 Power Redundancy

The key features of V5812G are its flexibility and extremely high reliability that result from
the redundancy design concept. V5812G meets carrier’s requirements, which is a substan-
tial factor for aggregation switches to perform traffic forwarding to core network without a
failure. It provides equipment-level reliability including the power redundancy.

Power Supply Redundancy

The power feeding of the V5812G is provided by Power Supply Unit (PSU). Dual PSUs can
be installed to guarantee constant system running. If power A’s input fails, the system can
be automatically switched to the other power B’s input and normal operations of the system
are not affected.

PSUs provide the stable and proper voltages to the system with the redundant and load-
balanced power processing. A failure of the feeding line (e.g. due to an external fuse break)
does not cause system breakdown.

2.3 Non-Stop Forwarding (NSF)

The purpose of Non-Stop Forwarding (NSF) feature is to guarantee continuous forwarding
of IP packets while the routing information is being restored/refreshed in case that the con-
trol plane of a switch fails. To provide NSF feature, the system is based on a distributed ar-
chitecture, with data forwarding plane and control plane separated. The control plane han-
dles a routing protocol and the data plane is responsible for data forwarding. The data can
be properly forwarded when the control plane goes wrong.

V5812G supports NSF feature for RIP, OSPF and BGP with a graceful restart capability.

3 Software Overview
The V5812G software also includes advanced QoS features for service provider applica-
tions with a new dynamic adaptive memory buffer technology that provides better QoS and
network performance. It also features large external address and security tables that scale
to meet the demands of high performance equipment at the core of the network.

For service providers, our software architecture facilitates a converged network by collaps-
ing voice, video and data onto a single IP backbone that supports both wired and wireless
connectivity.

3.1 Software Features

Š High Scalability & Flexibility of Full-service Solutions
Designed for maximum flexibility and scalability to ensure that carriers are able to meet
their customer’s needs with 4 GPON interfaces and 8 Gigabit Ethernet SFP or GTX
combo uplink ports. According to their network circumstances, it enables network man-
agers to build adaptable networks with maximum cost efficiency and easy manage-
ment.

Š Quick development of enhancements and bug fixes

In case V5812G needs to be updated with new software features such as GPON and
OAM, etc. or be released to new firmware due to unexpected problems, software bug
fixes can be developed and tested in a short time span. The software release allows
new features, enhancements, and problem fixes to be integrated into the software
quickly.

Š ONU Management
The V5812G provides the easy and efficient management solution for various service
environments with the ONU profile. The ONU profile is a collection of configurations for
the operation of an ONU (ONT). You can manage all ONUs connected to an OLT by
simply applying the configured profile to ONUs without any local configuration. This will
prevent unnecessary resources to configure every single ONU (ONT), allowing the
maintenance efficiency to dramatically increase.

Š Advanced Security
V5812G supports a comprehensive set of security features for connectivity and access
control, including RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service), TACACS+
(Terminal Access Control System), IEEE 802.1x and others. It also supports SSH (Se-
cure Shell) protocol for secure remote network management.
