Project Description

The main goal of this project is for us to

successfully implement the knowledge that we
gained in programming the Zilog
microcontroller through the use of Dev C++
that will specifically perform the required
characteristics of a SUMO robot in order for
it to function accordingly. We named our bot
as “Private D.I.A.C” where D.I.A.C stands for
the names of its creators, namely, Daniel,
Ira, Audrey, and Carla, while the “Private”
came from the thought of the highest rank in
firefighters because we want to make our bot
look like a big fire truck. Private D.I.A.C
performs the program codes that will be
encoded in the Zilog through the use of DB-9
and RS232 cable which serves as the
communication link between our software, which
is the program code, to the hardware, which is
the bot. Using two different types of sensors
which are Sharp Infrared Sensor and Reflective
sensors, we incorporated it in the design of
our SUMO bot to make it perform properly.
Private D.I.AC is able to sense whether there
is an object in front or in both its left and
right with the use of the analog input from
the Sharp IR and then to make it stay inside
the sumo track, the reflective sensors are the
ones responsible for it.

First, we constructed the program codes

through the use of Dev C++, which is very
important because this serves as the brain of
the SUMO bot that will control the response of
Private D.I.A.C based on the conditions set
for each Sharp IR and Reflective sensors.
These program codes are then communicated to
the heart of the bot, which is the Zilog
Microcontroller, through the use of DB-9 and
RS232 cable. The General Input/Output ports of
the Zilog is utilized for the three reflective
sensors and the ADC input pin is enabled
because we used Sharp IR as its proximity
sensor which outputs an analog value that will
then be converted through the Analog-to-
Digital Converter of the Zilog
Microcontroller.
