1850s - Origin of Johor Bahru

Chinese Settlement at SungaI Segget Early Sungai Segget
Immigrant Chinese arrived by small boats
through the Straits of Johor and sailed up
Sungai Segget to claim their sites close to
rivers and settled down, yet built up a fish
village - Kampung Wong Ah Fook.

Early Vibrancy of Johor Bahru, Trader Hub Johor Water Market
Many Chinese also settled around Sungai
Segget and opened shops and markets to
supply food and other necessities to the
planter communities.

As more plantations were opened in Johor,

the settlers who lived upstream depended on
Sungai Segget as the main waterway to sell
their produce and receive supplies from town.

Hence, the earliest trader hub in Johor Bahru

began.

Urbanisation of Johor Bahru City Centre Urbanisation of Johor
Johor Bahru town started to urbanise rapidly Bahru City Centre
around Jalan Wong Ah Fook and Sungai
Segget. Although the town area was getting
vibrant, however due to the decreasing of
boats travelling along the river, it started to
become a normal river.

In the following 20 years, Sungai Segget was

polluted and became dirty due to the
urbanisation within the town by discharging
the wastes and pollutants to the river from
construction sites. Furthermore, it caused the
flood especially at Jalan Wong Ah Fook
during the monsoon season.

Revitalisation of Sungai Segget - Proceed
towards future “gem”?
New pedestrian walkway was introduced to
cover up the smelly Sungai Segget,
meanwhile to introduce underground sewage
piping work and river cleaning.

Secondly, IRDA (Iskandar Region

Development Authority) planned to introduce
the beautification and revitalisation of the
river, yet develop the old Sungai Segget into a
future “gem” of Johor Bahru afterwards.

This project aims to bring back the “soul” of

Sungai Segget and develop as new “gem” of
JB. However, it will implement new landscape
and layout elements, which might “shift” the
original identity unintentionally into new
identity.
