CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP

INDIA
Introduction
Pedigree with their mantra of “Dogs bring out the good in us. PEDIGREE brings out the good in them Feed
the Good.” commits nutrition for every dog by dry and wet dog food. Treats encourage, support, fortify and
fuel a dog's power to be their healthiest and happiest selves at every stage of life — puppy, adult and senior.

Commitment to Shelter Dogs

PEDIGREE believes all dogs make the world a better place — and all dogs deserve a loving forever
home. The PEDIGREE Foundation supports shelter and rescue organizations across the country
that work tirelessly to match shelter dogs with loving owners. To help even more shelter dogs,
PEDIGREE recently launched the “You Buy We Give program”. Every time you purchase PEDIGREE
food, they donate healthy meals to shelter dogs in need.
Through The Lens Of Giving To The Society

The ABCD programme comes across as a ‘philanthropic’ activity as it acts as a bridge between the society’s insufficient
funds and the plight of stray dogs. An initiative like this would require a lot of monetary funds and access to resources.
Probably the reason why a lot of NGO’s aren’t in a position to take out such a task. With this drive, we invest in not just the
required funds but also provide the resources needed for it to work out. In addition to this, in-cash funds are donated to
NGOs which are dedicated to promote awareness about the benefits of the human-animal relationship and the miraculous
healing effects of animals on humans.

Culturally, Pet Therapy is an Ethical and moral management act as it continues to invest in workforce through employee
development and engagement with dogs. By providing pet therapy to people, pedigree is contributing its share in happiness
index and also by creating a field of animal assisted therapy Pedigree is helping a lot of patients to improve their health and
wellness without the dependence on medicines.

Environmentally , Pedigree is investing its funds to bring out environment friendly packaging . This comes across as a Legal
act as this aims to use 100% biodegradable plastics so that they can reduce their carbon footprints.
Economic Responsibility
A company has to be economically strong to pull its own weight . Pedigree has successfully
translated economic responsibility of profit making . Good corporate citizens earn enough money so
that their investors receive a strong return on their investments and so that other stakeholders are
assured of the continuity of the business and secure about the flow of products, services and jobs.
Pedigree has full line of products ranging from dry food, wet food and treats. Stats prove that
Pedigree's revenue is ranked 6th among it's top 10 competitors. Although profit making is not directly
a part of corporate citizenship but, profits enables a good corporate citizen. All the strategies
previously practiced by Pedigree has lead to good revenue generation .
The Bioplastic and Potato Estate Drive
The aim is to use 100% biodegradable plastics so that Pedigree can reduce
their carbon footprints. In addition to this Pedigree also looks forward to
investing in Pedigree Potato farm estates.
Bio-plastics are completely biodegradable, compostable or recyclable and are
free from toxic chemicals and hazardous substances.
Studies show that bioplastics will reduce the consumption of petroleum by
15-20 percent by 2025.
We here propose to start using bio-plastics made out of potato peel starch
which also contains dormant potato buds inside the bio-plastic. Once this
bio-plastic is put into the soil, within 3 days the plastic starts degrading and
will soon start sprouting into independent plants.
Pedigree will run a drive where they offer discounts to their consumers on the
customer’s every next purchase for stashing these bio-plastic packets after
they have been used and for handing it over to pedigree on their next visit to
their nearest store.
These packets will then be taken to the potato estates owned by
Pedigree, where new potatoes will be grown and from these organically
grown potatoes, the next set of bio-plastics will be made and so, the
cycle continues.
Pedigree will hire people from rural areas to work on these potato
estates and will also strengthen their communities by creating more
employment opportunities for them.
This bioplastic and potato estate drive will not only ensure reduced
carbon footprints but also lead to the development of rural societies.
With this strategy, we not only legally align with the Environment
Protection Act of 1986 which provides for the protection and
improvement of the environment but also contribute to the economic
growth of the rural sector. Pedigree feels deeply connected and
concerned for the environment and the society and by being a
law-abiding company, Pedigree proves themselves to be a good
corporate citizen.
The ABCD Programme

The ABCD programme is an abbreviation for the Animal Birth Control for Dogs, a sterilization drive that will help
control the stray dog population. This step will be taken as an initiative to actively work on the so called ‘street dog
menace’ which happens across places and ultimately results in people harming and sometimes even killing these
dogs.

The solution of over growing population of strays is sterilization and vaccination of street dogs. Sterilization basically
involves spaying of females and castration of male dogs so that they do not reproduce.Vaccination involves giving the
dogs an anti-rabies shot. After sterilization the dogs do not reproduce and hence their population becomes stable. As
they are vaccinated against Rabies and other diseases they do not pose any health hazard and live out their natural
lives healthily and harmlessly.
Apart from reducing numbers, the vaccination and sterilization programme has a
number of benefits-
1. No new pups will be born which will allow the population to stabilize.
2. Vaccination against rabies eliminates the danger from the disease negligible.
3. Sterilized dogs will mean that there will not be fighting or mating during the heat
season.
4. With no litters to protect, female dogs will not be aggressive.
5. Minus the strain of pregnancy, female dogs will remain healthier.
6. The existing dog population will be familiar, friendly, healthy and harmless.
7.Sterilized dogs do not get into fights and injure each other during the mating
season.
8.As residents no longer ill-treat dogs, the dogs do not feel threatened and are
friendly and harmless.
The ABCD Workforce

The drive will be a dedicated team that will tie up with practising veterinarians. The team will be entrusted with the job of
picking up the animals, deworming them, sterilizing them, treating the ones that need other help, vaccinating them, cutting
the ear for instant recognition and then releasing them. The team will also require a vehicle with cages for pickups and pay
the salary of a driver and two/three Class 4 employees who will double as sweepers, feeders etc. These employees will be
trained on how to pick up animals. At least 3 Janitors need to be employed for the dog compounds to be cleaned of faeces
etc, this MUST be done on a daily basis. The two doctors should be trained in sterilization methods. Treatment tables, OT
lights and cages could be given as this will help keep the animals. The idea is to get off the ground as quickly as possible
instead of making the NGOs spend a lot in infrastructure. Food should be cooked on the premises. The dogs must be fed
twice a day – once in the morning by 9am and then again by 4pm. Since the dogs are locked up in the compound they have
no means of fending for themselves. All times they must be clean water bowls in the compounds. The operation theatre
must be made professional and should be a sterile area. There should be one room for an OPD so that animals can be
checked. There should be a fridge. There is no point in sterilizing a dog if it does not get vaccinated. And no vaccinations
can be there if there is no fridge.
Pet Therapy For Mental Health

India has dropped down seven spots in the happiness ranking since 2018. Out of
156 nations it ranks 140 which is another concern .So ethically working towards this
issue, Pedigree will be holding Pet Therapy sessions, a relatively new concept in
india (though common in western countries) in corporate offices , hospitals and
even at private residences. In a session for employees, we aim to de-stress them
and in general we aim to bring happiness to everyone and also help people
overcome their fear of dogs. Pet therapy lifts up people’s moods and helps to beat
any type of stress on both personal and professional fronts .

It has been scientifically proven that a dog’s company can bring down stress in
humans.

This strategy is not only for Pedigree’s employees but is also creating a space for
animal assisted therapy in india for mentally challenged children, autistic children,
hyperactive children, physically disabled people, children with hearing and speech
impairment, children with developmental disability, cancer patients, AIDS orphans,
children with learning disabilities, and also for people with post-traumatic stress
disorder.

Aspects of Corporate Citizenship and Corporate
Governance

Corporate Citizenship and Corporate governance are two concepts that are well illustrated by Pedigree when they take up
the Legal, Ethical, Economic and Philanthropic aspects. Pedigree functions within the legal layout and contributes to the
environment and the community with their Bio-Plastic and Potato Estate Drive. They also are working towards bringing
awareness towards Dog Therapy to help eradicate Mental Health Issues which is a rising concern in today’s time in India.
These strategies by Pedigree highlight on their values and their concern to be a good corporate citizen. Being an
economically strong company with a turn over of about 125 billion dollars (According to 2018 Reports) in India, Pedigree
has the strength to sustain a strong philanthropic activity like the ABCD campaign, hence making Pedigree a good
Corporate governor which can take care and look after its own employees and go beyond that to look after the society,
community, environment and all the people involved and affected directly or indirectly by their business.
