Danger linked to a leak

Regarding Toxicity
Regarding Bad Smell
Regarding Inflammation & Explosion’s
Risk
Toxicity

Odorants are irritating and

dangerous in a concentrate
form
Avoid to breath vapours of
the product
Put on an individual breathing mask
with an adequate filter and leave the
risky area
Against gases & organic vapours,
inorganics, sulfur dioxide, ammonia &
organic derivatives of ammonia
Toxicity (Cont.)

To handle, wear Rubber gloves

To avoid eye contact, wear safety
goggles
Wash abundantly tools with a cleaning
product
(e.g. O’Scent) after using them
Bad smell
Spray ASAP a masking agent in air to
avoid an avalanche of calls for odor
It is possible to eliminate bad smells
with specific deodorizing techniques
recommended by ARKEMA
Destruction with an
oxidizing agent at
5% (w/w) of
sodium hypo
chlorite (Bleach) in
water
To treat large spills of gas odorant, use
first of all an absorbent
Inflammability & explosivity (1)
The storage area should be
strictly No Smoking
Prohibit all sources of sparks
and ignition
Only use non-sparking tools
Avoid as much as possible the
accumulation of static discharges,
providing electrical earth connection of
equipment
Employees must wear antistatic shoes
& clothes

Inflammability & explosivity (2)

Empty packaging may contain gas
odorant vapours, so never cut, crush or
weld a packaging
There are many risks of explosion
Connect the container to earth
Emergency handling procedures
Spill Response

Spill Response
An immediate action in case of leaks
prevents against odor calls
STOP the leak and CONTAIN the spill
ABSORB the spill
NEUTRALIZE and MASK the odor
DISPOSE of the material

Containment
CONFINE versus CONTAIN the spill
Shut off all ignition sources in the spill
area
Treat as Class 3 flammable material
Stop leakage that caused the spill
Contain within closed area if possible
Keep from getting into water source
Use catch bucket filled with
neutralizing agent
Absorption

ABSORB the spill

Commercial absorbent material can be
used to knock down odors
Commercial powder absorbents
Sand, clay or other kinds of soil
Sawdust, kitty litter
Commercial absorbent pads
Cover spill Tarps, plastic sheets
Neutralize and Mask
Neultralize and Mask the odor
Live Bacteria solutions
Slow biochemical oxidation
Add soap to increase adhesion properties
Add anti-freeze to decrease freezing point
Masking Agents
Do not oxidize – mask odors
Dilute bleach solutions
Strong oxidizing agent
Caution: Exothermic
reaction with mercaptans
Household bleaches
5% solution of sodium
hypochlorite
CAUTION
NEVER USE POWDER BLEACHES
NEVER USE CHLORINE BLEACH, i.e.
SWIMMING POOL BLEACHES
Do not use on large spills
Must treat waste as hazardous
material
Disposal and Decontaminate
DISPOSE of material
As directed by
Environmental quality
personnel or agency
Do not use water to spray
down area
Ethyl mercaptan is marine
toxin
Remove dirt or asphalt
Place in sealed containers to control odors
Decontaminate site
As directed by Environmental quality personnel or
agency
Concrete surfaces treated with bleach water
Treat liquid as hazardous material
Soil contamination
Bioremediation may be possible
Remove the liquid
Use a vacuum trucks for large liquid spills
Some advice
You cannot destroy on the same way a liquid or a
gas
With a liquid, you only can use chemical or thermal
destruction
The chemical destruction for liquid gas odorant is
only advised for amounts less than 0.5 L

Chemical neutralisation
Commercial bleach: usually 48 chlorometric degrees
(13.14 % of sodium hypochlorite) to be diluted with
water until 3-4%

NEVER USE SOLID BLEACH

oxygenated water: also hydrogen peroxide - BE
CAREFUL because chemical reaction depends on the
pH, oxidation reaction can be explosive
