LIFI VS WIFI
LI-FI is a new technology which claims
to be 100 times faster than the current WI-FI
technology. LI-FI uses which was first invented
by Harold Haas of the University of Edinburgh
in 2011, uses visible light communication
(VLC) to send data at extremely high speeds.
Essentially, this works like an incredibly fast
signal lamp, flashing on and off in order to relay
messages in binary code (1s and 0s).

In previous lab-based experiments, the technology was able to transmit up to 224 gigabits per
second. To put this in perspective, Wi-Fi is capable of reaching speeds of around 600 megabits per
second.

The technology has now been deployed in real-life situations for the first time, thanks to the
work of Estonian start-up Velmenni, which has begun trialing Li-Fi in offices and other industrial
settings in Tallinn. In these environments, they were able to achieve connection speeds of around one
gigabit per second.

Lifi applications used in airlines. undersea explorations. operation theaters in the hospital and
internet browsing and wifi used for internet browsing with the help of wifi klosks or wifi hotspots.
Lifi can pass through salty sea water where as Wifi can not pass through sea water. WiFi is the least
efficient to work in crowded areas. Where as Lifi is the most efficient to work in crowded areas.
Because lifi used visible light, and light cannot pass through walls, the signal range is naturally limited
by physical barriers. so lifi is less effective than wifi.

LiFi technology is not replacement of widely used wifi technology. Both the technologies
LiFi and WiFi co-exist together based on their respective unique features. LiFi operates between
wavelengths in the range from 380 nm to 780 nm. WiFi operates at different frequency bands viz. 2.4
GHz and 5 GHz. To exchange data, Lifi is more rapidly then wifi, and at lower power level lifi is
more safer then WiFi.
