The Hunter Gets Hunted

The book The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell is about a man named

Rainsford that is a hunter and have to survive is an island with no communication nor human

besides a man named General Zaroff that is trying to kill him. Richard Connell uses Imagery,

suspense, and irony to illustrate, development, and the purpose of the story to make the book

more entertaining and interesting.

To begin with, the author includes a lot of imagery, for example, the forest. When

Rainsford was running and hiding from General Zaroff, he describes the surroundings of where

he is. The quote “ The baying of the hounds drew nearer, then still nearer, nearer. On a ridge,

Rainsford climbed a tree. Down a watercourse not a quarter of a mile away. . . he saw the lean

figure of General Zaroff” (15). Rainsford was looking at his surroundings to see if he can do

anything but he saw the General so he was planning something. Richard Connell illustrate the

forest very well as when the main character is in trouble.

Also, Richard Connell includes suspense to give the book development to the character.

As Rainsford was on the run he had to make a decision, either stay hidden and risk General

Zaroff hounds to find him or jump off the cliff to land in the water but it was most unlikely to

him for him to survive. The quote “ Twenty feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed.

Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds, then he leaped far out the sea . . . “ (16). This gives

great suspense to the reader and great development to the character in the future. Did he die?
Finally, the book includes irony to give a purpose/message of the story. When General

Zaroff came back home after trying to hunt Rainsford, he got himself all nice and comfortable;

after he had dinner and went to his room. What happens when General Zaroff was going to bed “

A man, who had been hiding in the curtains of the bed, was standing there “ Rainsford”

screamed the General. How did you get here”(16)? The irony comes by how the General thought

Rainsford was dead but he appeared behind the curtains of what was General Zaroff bed. This

gives the purpose/message by not getting cocky with your win and accomplishment.

Ultimately, Richard Connell gives imagery, suspense, and irony in the book The Most

Dangerous Game. Also, it gives a purpose/message of the story, development in the character,

and illustrates in words. All of those things mentioned it makes the story more interesting.
