to blow out.
Applicants say they were never
told they could be forced to wait
more than a year for a decision.
More than 37,000 people are
waiting for news on their residence
applications.
Among them is research and
development chemist Yu Zheng,
who does not fit immigration
criteria to be in a priority queue.
But that does not mean his case
is not urgent - if he does not get
residence before June when he starts a PHD at
Massey he will have to abandon his application
as a skilled migrant.
He said he was granted a fully funded
doctoral scholarship in chemistry and that too
would be hard to give up.
He tried and failed to access an escalation
process to shorten a 15-month timeframe.
Zheng said Immigration New Zealand was
not listening to people who needed their cases
dealt with quickly.
“I have attached another 20 documents to
support my request. It’s bad, it’s bad for me. I
spent a long time to prepare for that escalation
request.”

Over the past two-and-a-half decades, Ms Rahman
has been a vocal on rights of Muslim women and raised
concerns of racial discrimination against the Muslim
community and Muslim women in New Zealand,
especially after the 9/11 attacks.
With her work with the community over two decades,
she considers that New Zealand has witnessed many
positive changes toward different ethnic communities,
especially Muslim women. However, there is still a
long way to go.
She is also a member of the Waikato Interfaith
Council and is the current Project Lead for the
Inclusive Aotearoa Collective.
Ms Rahman is one of the ten semi-finalists in the
New Zealander of the Year 2020 category. This award
honours someone who, through their inspiration and
leadership, contributes to the wellbeing of the country.
Ms Rahman shares the semi-finalist list with Peter

Pratima Nand

Pratima Nand, JP and QSM, is an Auckland based

community worker who has contributed her services
in her professional capacity as an interpreter and
translator in Fiji Hindi, Hindi and Urdu Languages
for 21 years to organisations such as DHBs, District
Courts, Ministries, NZ Police, law firms and SERCO.
She voluntarily contributed to the translation of the
Treaty of Waitangi, both English and Maori versions,
in the Hindi language among 20 other languages
for Treaty Times Thirty to mark the celebration of
NZSTI’s 30th anniversary.
She was a Founding member, President, Liaison
Officer and elected spokesperson for Fiji Women’s
Society Inc, providing support to victims of domestic
violence and helping Fijians to receive medical services
in New Zealand. She also served on the Committee
of Management for Roskill Together, Mt Roskill/
Puketapapa specific community-led development
project, for three years and is a member of the Ethnic
People’s Advisory Panel.
There are six total categories, including New
Zealander of the Year and the winners in each category
will receive $5000 and a custom-made trophy. The top
three finalists in each category will be announced on
January 27, and the winner will be named at an awards
gala in Auckland on February 20, 2020

Auckland Indian Association hosts its
first of many centenary celebrations

he Auckland Indian Association on
Saturday, December 14, hosted its first
of many centennial celebrations with
around 600 donors, committee members, guests
and community leaders.
The Auckland Indian Association Inc. (AIAI)
was established in 1920 with Chhotubhai Patel
as the first President. Meetings were held in
members’ garages to discuss matters of the
community’s interest and concerns such as
discrimination and immigration.
The Association then purchased a property
at 156 Victoria Street West in about 1936 with
three houses, which were rented out until the
Association was in the position to build the
Gandhi Hall in 1955.
“The Association has moved from strength
to strength since its inception in 1920 and
achieved many milestones,” President of AIAI
Narendra Bhana told The Indian Weekender.
“The venue looked magnificent on the day
as the evening commenced with the lighting
of Diya and Master of ceremony Puspaben
Lekinwala providing a brief history of the AIAI
and acknowledging donor member’s valuable
contribution to the organisation,” Mr Bhana
added.
Present at the event as guests were Mt
Roskill MP Michel Wood, National Party MP
Dr Parmjeet Parmar, NZICA President Paul
Patel, Jeet Suchdev from Bhartiya Samaj and
other guests.
At the event, three Kiwi Indians were
awarded as Life Members for Auckland Indian
Association. The Association announced

Bhanuben Daji as the newly appointed Life
Members of AIAI, a prestigious position offered
to the dedicated members of the organisation
for their prolonged hard work and commitment.

I
was incredibly proud to stand alongside
Ethnic Communities Minister Hon. Jenny
Salesa when she recently announced a
significant funding boost to support our diverse
ethnic communities. The Ethnic Communities
Development Fund (ECDF) – which was
basically stagnant at $520,000 per year under
the previous government - has increased eight
times to a whopping $4.2 million per year. 
There will be $17 million available for
ethnic communities over the next four
years. The contestable fund will support
ethnic communities with skills development,
celebrating what makes them (us) unique as
New Zealanders and to participate in society.
I strong believe that effective multiculturalism
includes being able to celebrate the culture,
heritage and languages that our diverse migrant
communities have brought with us to Aotearoa.
It means being able to celebrate our unique
diversity, but also embracing what unites us
as New Zealanders - learning New Zealand’s
history, te ao Māori, participating in society and
having our voices heard at all decision-making
levels as New Zealand continues to grow.
The new ECDF will assist our communities
to achieve these goals. The fund’s priorities
have expanded to accommodate a growing
demand from our communities for support.
Another important change we are making is
that it will now be a rolling fund, which will
remain open throughout the year instead of a
one-off fund as it previously was. That means
there’s funding available now!
Finally, the Office of Ethnic Communities has
a clear mandate from the Minister to provide
support to organisations that are interested in
applying but are either unsure of the process or
whether their project is likely to be supported.
The Office has also been much better resourced
(with almost twice the number of staff) to be
able to provide this support.
I’ve spoken to many people over the years
who have told me that they applied once for
funding through the ECDF, weren’t successful,
and haven’t applied again because it has been
just too difficult. That’s not fair, and that’s why
we’re changing it. The Minister and I want
our communities to be supported to thrive.
It is important that we all work together to ensure
that New Zealand is truly inclusive and that
our ethnic communities are better supported to
connect and actively participate in our society.

Scholarship in Papakura

hhavi Breja, a student of psychology,
based in Papakura, is one of sixteen
students to be awarded Local Board
Youth Scholarship from Papakura.
Sixteen students were awarded scholarships
in different areas of the academic pursuits and
trade careers, the total of which amounted more
than $26,000.
Kiwi Indian student Chhavi Breja recently
completed Bachelor of Science from the
University of Auckland majoring in Psychology.
Ms Breja found about the scholarship through
Papakura Local Board’s online promotion and
her work with the Papakura Youth Council
earlier this year.
The scholarship is for rangatahi (those aged
25 and under) who live in the Papakura Local
Board Area and are wanting to gain funding for
tertiary study, vocational pursuits, trades, or
conferences/ training programmes.
Applicants were also expected to show some
level of community involvement and write about
how they could use the scholarship to further
themselves and give back to their community.
Ms Breja received a $1000 scholarship that was
announced on Tuesday, December 17.
“From a young age I have always been
interested in the function of the brain, as well as
our behaviour, development, and culture, and
psychology is a discipline which combines all
of these topics.
“I will put the scholarship towards further
university study in 2020 as I embark on the
journey to an MSc,” Ms Breja told The Indian
Weekender.

Buying your first Home in NZ? Things you need to know

a film called Naukri (1954). The song is a
fine example of the dream of the common
man and what a ‘ghar’ embodies. Home
after all is always “Home sweet home”.
While a roof over one’s head has always
been man’s dream, in today’s context it
is as much aspirational as it is something that
can be achieved with a focused approach, self-
discipline and proper guidance.
What follows below is written keeping in
mind the New Zealand market.
DEPOSIT
This is the first step toward achieving your
dream of owning your own home.
There are several ways you can put together
the deposit required to buy your own home.
SAVINGS
Saving your way into a deposit is the
traditional way, and this is where your self-
discipline comes into play. The ability to save
regularly over a period of time demonstrates
your commitment to your goal. The bank can
clearly see the regularity of your savings and
it reflects on your financial discipline. The
more you save, the better it is for you when it
comes to borrowing for your home. “No pain,
No gain” is an old adage that holds particularly
true in the home buying context.
GIFTING
In New Zealand, It is quite common for a
parent or family member to gift the amount
or part of the amount required for a deposit.
However, lenders usually want to see an ability
to save. In most cases a five percent ‘own
savings’ is required.
SUPPORT for FIRST HOME
BUYERS
This is something typically Kiwi. There are
three main schemes that are available if you’re
a first home buyer:
¡¡ Welcome Home Loan – This comes in handy
if you don’t have the 20% deposit. This is
offered in conjunction with Housing New
Zealand
¡¡ Kiwisaver withdrawal - If you have been
a Kiwisaver member for three years or
more, you may be able to put some of your
KiwiSaver savings towards your first home.
This is subject to approval by the Kiwisaver
provider.
¡¡ KiwiSaver Homestart grant- As a first home
buyer, you may be able to get a grant towards
your first home. This grant is provided by
Housing New Zealand and could be upto five
thousand dollars per person if you are buying
an existing property or upto ten thousand
dollars if buying a new land and building
package.
COSTS of BUYING A HOME
While the deposit forms the largest chunk of
the property purchase cost, there are other costs
that a home buyer has to bear.

Solicitor’s Fees: The solicitor advises you
while buying property. They do all the legal
paperwork involved and for their services
including conveyancing they charge a fee.
Lender’s Fees: Most lenders have a loan
application fee or a setup fee. This may be
waived on a case by case basis. This fee is
usually added to the loan.
Land Information Memorandum (LIM):
A LIM report is an important document as it
will tell you what the council knows about the
property. Your solicitor will need to see this
and highlight any clarifications to be sought or
concerns to be raised with the Council.
Lender’s Mortgage Insurance: Lender’s
Mortgage Insurance (LMI) is an insurance
policy that protects the lender (the financial
institution) from financial loss in the event that
the borrower (you) can’t afford to keep up the
home loan repayments. Your financial institution
may make it a condition of borrowing that
you pay for their lenders’ mortgage insurance
policy. This is usually because you are a first
home buyer and/or you have a small deposit –
your Loan to Value Ratio (LVR) is high. You
can pay this as a lump sum or you may be able
to add this to your loan.
Moving Costs: These are costs associated
with moving into your new home.
In the excitement of buying their own home
many people don’t realise that over and above
the initial costs associated with the purchase of
a home there are some regular costs to home
ownership.
Council Rates: These are levied by the
Council for services they provide.
House Insurance: You need to insure your
home from the day you become the owner
in order to be able to deal with the “What if”
should something untoward like an earthquake
happen and your property suffers damage.
Mortgage Protection Insurance: The house
insurance protects the house should there be any
damages due to an unforeseen event. It is also
prudent to get Mortgage Protection Insurance
to protect the repayments should something
happen to you that impacts on your ability to
earn and make regular loan repayments.
Body Corporate levy: If you buy an
apartment or a unit you may need to pay a
Body Corporate Levy. This could be monthly
or annual.
Repairs and maintenance: Every now and
again your property might need some regular
maintenance and upkeep. Make sure you keep
money aside for repairs and maintenance.
Regular maintenance keeps costs down and
improves the value of your home.

declared Marine Protected Areas and
officially challenge others to follow
their lead.
He says a 100% EEZ strategy can
provide a regulated and managed
ocean buffer between growing
coastal populations and the high seas
by limiting pollution, controlling
fisheries markets, increasing fish-
stock, protecting biodiversity,
rebuilding ecosystems, and
monitoring shipping, among other
benefits.

Times and Herald Ltd.
He said before Nadi became a site for an international airport,
there was a long drawn out battle in the columns of The Fiji
Times over the sitting of the airport between Mr Gerry Adams,
Lautoka’s second mayor, and business tycoon Mr Harold Gatty.
Mr Gatty had wanted it in Suva. At one stage plans were drawn
up to build the airport on the Laucala Bay foreshore, with the
runway running into the sea. But the cost was prohibitive and the
authorities decided to build it in Nadi.
Mr Usher said while teaching at the old Western Provincial
School at Namaka, he had to keep a record of the temperature,
rainfall and cloud conditions. He said these were later sent to New
Zealand and were computed to decide that weather conditions at
Nadi were suitable for international air traffic.
The contract for the airport was written on an envelope, he
said. It contained simply a cross sign, with figures 250,000
pounds, sterling and the signature of Mr Walter Nash, who was

When Mr Usher arrived in Fiji to teach at Levuka Public
School in 1930, roads were few. Kings Road was then under
construction. Mr Usher was one of the first passengers in the
original Fiji Airways piloted by Captain Gordon Fenton and
running a service between Suva and Levuka.
He told of a risky landing when the engine switch jammed and
the pilot could not switch off the motor.
“Bus services had just started in 1935,” he shared. “I travelled
with all sorts of passengers, once with a goat.”
“Tui Johnson once told me of a time when he travelled with a
corpse. They propped the body against the seat and drove off.”
Mr Usher said one morning just before World War II; a

American fleet in Momi Bay, north-west of Sigatoka.
This armada later fought the battle of the Coral Sea described
as one of the most important battles in history.
It was fought between May 4–8, 1942, between the Imperial
Japanese Navy (IJN) and naval and air forces from the United
States and Australia. The battle is historically significant as the
first action in which aircraft carriers engaged each other, as well
as the first in which the opposing ships neither sighted nor fired
directly upon one another.
While the battle was considered a draw, it was an important
turning point in the war in the Pacific because for the first time,
the Allies had stopped the Japanese advance.

and universities across the country
came out in protest against the alleged
police action against the students of Jamia
Millia Islamia (JMI) in the national capital
on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi,
in a series of tweets on Monday, articulated
the government’s stand on the Citizenship
Amendment Act (CAA).
He said while dissent is an essential part of
democracy, violence is not. “Violent protests
on the CAA are unfortunate and distressing.
Debate, discussion and dissent are essential
parts of democracy but, never has damage to
public property and disturbance of normal life
been a part of our ethos,” tweeted the Prime
Minister.
His reference was clearly to violent protests
following the passage of CAA last week, with
five people dying in Assam, several instances
of arson in West Bengal, and violent protests
in Delhi on Sunday, during which public buses
were burnt and the police barged into JMI.
Modi said the need of the hour is for all to
work together for the empowerment of every
Indian, especially the poor, downtrodden and
marginalised. Blaming the violence on “vested
interest groups”, the PM alleged that they are
out to divide India.

Assuring the people that there will be no
discrimination based on religion, Modi said,
“I want to unequivocally assure my fellow
Indians that CAA does not affect any citizen of
India of any religion. No Indian has anything
to worry…This Act is only for those who have
faced years of persecution outside and have no
other place to go except India.” The PM also
appealed to everyone to refrain from rumour
mongering. The CAA fast-tracks citizenship
for non-Muslim minorities from Bangladesh,
Pakistan and Afghanistan. Protests against it in
the North-east are largely driven by the issue
of identity -- locals do not want outsiders, no
matter what their religion is. In other parts of
the country, the fear is that the government will
use CAA along with a nation-wide National
Register of Citizens. In Assam, 1.9 million
people have been excluded from the NRC.
This includes both Hindus and Muslims. CAA
will provide a way out for non-Muslims who
have been in India from before 31 december
2014.
BJP’s national president and home minister
Amit Shah also urged Congress, AAP and
TMC to desist from spreading rumours about
the CCA that created a violent atmosphere in
the country and asked them to get back from
their stand as it would not lead to anyone’s
betterment. Addressing a public rally in
Jharkhand’s Santhal Pargana division in
Poryahat assembly segment, Shah said, “I
want to explain that the CCA was necessitated
to give citizenship rights to thousands of
illegal immigrants, mostly comprising poor
Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhas, Jains, Christians and
Parsis, ousted from Pakistan, Bangladesh and
Afghanistan. But, the Congress is playing vote
bank politics over the issue.”
The home minister further appealed, “Don’t
get swayed by rumours as the Congress, APP
and TMC are misguiding you and have created
a violent atmosphere in the country. I also urge
the Congress-APP-TMC to get back from
your stand as it would not lead to anyone’s
betterment.”
Reacting to Shah’s appeal, Congress’ state
spokesperson Kishore Shahdeo said, “It is
not that the Congress had not presented its
stand in the Parliament during discussions
on citizenship amendment bill. But, the BJP
leaders are so arrogant that they don’t want to
listen to any one.”

countries to reduce their emission
reduction targets by accumulating
and trading in carbon credits.
As per rough estimates, nations
hold close to 4 billion unsold certified
emission reductions (CERs). India
has a depository of 750 million and
China has much more than India.
One CER equals to one tonne of
carbon dioxide.
The CERs help companies earn
billions of dollars by trading them.
Currently, there is market but no
political platform.
Climate experts said that the
only saving grace for India, China
and Brazil and some other countries
was that they did not allow the
developed nations to completely
reject the carbon trade mechanism,
still a key component for the full
operationalisation of the Paris
Climate Change Agreement.
This issue will now be discussed
in the next round of UN climate
negotiations that will take place in
Bonn, Germany, in June 2020 and
later in Glasgow, Scotland, at the
COP26 in November.

The hosts put up an imposing total of 387/5, with a
monumental opening partnership of 227 between KL
Rahul and Rohit Sharma getting them there. Rohit’s 159
saw him rack up his seventh ODI century this year; only
Sachin Tendulkar has hit more in a calendar year, leading
the way with nine in 1998. The century also took Rohit’s
international tally of tons this year to 10.
Rahul was the first wicket to fall, dismissed by Alzarri
Joseph shortly after reaching his third ODI century.
Captain Virat Kohli endured a rare failure, falling to
Kieron Pollard for a golden duck, but Shreyas Iyer and
Rishabh Pant were able to put on quite the show after
Rohit departed.

in what was an exhibition of batsmanship.

Shreyas Iyer put up a fiery stand of 73 off just 25 balls.
India scored 387/5 and while the West Indies fell 107
runs short of the target, they too had a good opening stand
between Evin Lewis and Shai Hope. Later, Hope held up
one end as Nicholas Pooran launched an assault on the
Indian bowlers to briefly tip the scales in the visitors’
favour.
However, the match also saw a first-ever instance of
captains of both sides being dismissed for golden ducks.

scorers in ODIs in 2019, was dismissed for a rare first
ball duck when he replaced centurion Rahul. He fell to
his West Indies counterpart Kieron Pollard, who bowled
only two overs in the Indian innings.
Later, Pollard himself fell for a first ball duck, edging
Mohammed Shami to Pant behind the stumps. This is
the first time in an ODI that captains of both sides were
dismissed for a first ball duck.
Pollard was Shami’s second wicket after the latter had
removed the dangerous Pooran in the previous delivery to
swing the match back in India’s favour.
"Sydney tends to swing around a little bit early in the
game but if it's a flat wicket in Melbourne you'd think his
impact on the game would not be as high as it would have
been here.
"His record for a long time now has been outstanding
and he's a competitor and a great athlete."
New Zealand will also have to deal with the poor run
of opener Jeet Raval. "Raval has looked a little bit out of
his depth and if you look at his last 10 or 11 innings it
would suggest he's struggling to find runs at Test level,"

FIFA confirms four bids for 2023 Women's World Cup

IFA has confirmed that it has received bids from Brazil, Japan,
Colombia and a joint bid from Australia and New Zealand to host the
2023 Women's World Cup. The 2023 Women's World Cup has witnessed an
unprecedented interest from FIFA's member associations with the four bids
having been submitted before the deadline of Friday, FIFA said.
The international football governing body will kick off an assessment
process, including inspection visits to the bidding countries which are
expected to take place across January and February 2020.
The FIFA Council will evaluate all eligible bids and select the hosts at
its meeting in Addis Ababa in June 2020, said the statement. The 2023
World Cup will feature 32 teams for the first time according to a unanimous
decision by FIFA Council following this year's World Cup in France.

now it is FIFA's responsibility to take concrete measures to keep fostering
the game's incredible growth," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said. He

Kryst, who is licensed to practice in two
states, earned both her law degree and MBA

her undergraduate work at the University of
South Carolina. In a video played during this
week's competition, Kryst told a story about
how a judge at a legal competition suggested
she wear a skirt instead of pants because
judges prefer skirts.
"Glass ceilings can be broken wearing
either a skirt or pants," she said. "Don't tell
females to wear different clothes while you
give the men substantive feedback on their
legal arguments."

• 100 gm boiled chicken breasts
• 150 gm lettuce leaf
• 1 handful arugula
• 1 small avocados
• 100 gm cherry tomatoes
• 2 tablespoon red onion
• For Dressing
• 2 tablespoon oregano
• 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar
• 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
• 2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
• 1/2 tablespoon dijon mustard
Method
• To prepare this salad recipe, peel the
avocado and cut fine slices of it in a bowl.
Next, wash the cherry tomatoes and cut
them into halves. Peel and finely chop the
red onion in a small bowl.
• Then, finally cut julienne of boiled chicken.
Also, wash the arugula and lettuce leaves,
and pat them dry.
• Keep these salad leaves aside until required.
(Note: You can also grill the chicken for
better taste using the least oil.)
• Now, prepare the salad dressing my mixing
together red wine vinegar, extra virgin olive
oil, oregano, Dijon mustard, black pepper
and lemon juice.
• Once the salad dressing is ready, take a
large bowl and throw in the washed arugula
and lettuce leaves.
• Add the finely chopped red onion, chicken
julienne along with halved cherry tomatoes
and arugula slices in the bowl. Pour the
prepared dressing over it and toss well all
the ingredients. Once done, serve with a
bread of your choice.
