Deepavali event held at Freeman’s
Bay on Saturday, October 26.
Attended by 340 people of
different communities, the event was
lauded by the audience for bringing
new faces and younger members of
the community an opportunity to
perform on the stage and showcase
their hidden talents.
“We promised our community that
our Deepavali celebrations would
be different from previous years
where we would invite international
performers from Malaysia, Singapore
or India,” president of Auckland
Tamil Association, Ravindran Vai
told The Indian Weekender.
“The community loved to see new
performers and first-timers on the
stage, and as expected they delivered
a magnificent show,” Mr Vai added.
Present at the event were
representatives of different
communities organisations and

and MP Jenny Salesa, members of
parliament besides families dressed
in fancy and colourful ethnic Indian
wears.
The event also felicitated budding
cricketer Adithya Ashok who has
been chosen in the New Zealand U19
squad to tour Australia as the teams
gear up for the World Cup in South
Africa in 2020.
“Thank you, Auckland Tamil
Association for giving me this
honour; I would like to thank my
parents for being the pillar, standing
behind me supporting through all my
practices and tournaments,” Adithya
said after receiving the memento at
the event.
Adithya Ashok is one of the most
promising faces of New Zealand
cricket, an all-rounder who was
promoted to Mt Albert Grammar
School’s first XI in year nine. He
took a remarkable six wickets for
Auckland against Northern Districts
at the national under-17 tournament
earlier in January.
The hosts also gave trophies to the
winners of Badminton tournament
earlier this year.
One of the highlights of the event
was a group of children aged four
and above from the Tamil School in
Auckland who demonstrated Tamil
language learned at the school.
The event had 15 performances
by different groups, duets and solo
performances including a classical
Indian dance by famous Kiwi Indian
dancer Abhishek Ravi, who gave a
thrilling self-choreographed
dance at the event.

from different cultures
such as Tamil, Gujarati,
Malayalee, middle-eastern,
Telugu and Punjabi and
African Drums etc.
“Our goal during such
events is to give the
community to celebrate
Deepavali the way they
would have observed back at
the hometowns in India and
also have a great evening outing with
their family and fellow community
members,” secretary of ATA, Murali
Kumar said.
The event concluded with a
sumptuous dinner, an integral part of
a community event arranged for all
the attendees and guests at the event.

house is believed to have started from the

Te Waha Point Drowning:
On Tuesday, October 29, police found the
body of the woman who went missing on
her fishing trip with her husband at Te Waha
Point on Labour Day holiday. The body of the
31-year-old was discovered on White's Beach
near Piha at about 8:15 a.m.
Ms Prasad is said to have fallen into the
water at 7:20 a.m. and failed to resurface. As
per NZ Herald, a search operation was carried
by emergency services including Volunteer
Life Saving Club until dark.
"The death has been referred to the Coroner-

While the rate of rental price increases
across Auckland has continued to slow over
recent months, some pockets of the market
are still experiencing relatively strong price
pressure.
Upmarket CBD apartments and two-
bedroom properties overall, as well as
homes in South Auckland and Franklin,
were the standouts in the latest quarterly
rental figures released by Barfoot &
Thompson, reflecting real data from the
company’s portfolio of more than 17,000
properties.
“The average weekly rent across all
properties was $579, up 2.95% at the end
of September when compared to the same
time last year, or around $16 more per
week,” says Director Kiri Barfoot.
This is the second quarter in a row the
average rate of increase has held under 3%
in keeping with a downward trend on price
increases since early 2018, when weekly
rent increases were typically closer to 5%
year on year.
“However, there are some property types
and locations that are bucking the trend,”
says Ms Barfoot. “Most notable are the
smaller properties, with weekly rents for
two-bedroom homes growing by 4.06%
year on year.
“This is driven in part by the growing
number of higher-end apartments in and
around the central city that fall into the
two-bedroom category, although demand
for this sized home elsewhere in the city
remains strong also.”
Central city properties, all of which are
apartments, have attracted weekly rents that
are 6.15% higher year-on-year, although
growth has softened since last quarter when
the rate of increase surpassed 8%.
Ms Barfoot says the price growth in
the two-bedroom sector of the market is
particularly stark when compared to larger
homes, which were seeing the opposite.
“On average, weekly rents for homes
with four or more bedrooms are hovering
around 1% higher year on year, and some
will have seen flat or declining prices
during the year.”
Some areas of the region were also seeing
slightly more upwards pressure on weekly
rents than the norm, with South Auckland
and Franklin properties renting for between
3.78% and 4.41% more than they were at
end September 2018. Price growth was
lowest in Rodney and the Eastern Suburbs.
Ms Barfoot adds that although there has
been some softening of rental yields, they
remain attractive when compared to many
other investment opportunities, particularly
bank interest rates. "There is probably no
better time for consideration to be given to
investing in the property rental market.”

Deputy CIO David Lewis says falling business
confidence and a slowing economy are now
adversely influencing business investment decisions.
“The economy is not tanking, though there’s been a
gradual slowing over the past three years. But you have to
remember, our population’s been growing pretty quickly, at
1.5% – so, a lot of the GDP growth we’ve been getting here
is due to the fact that there are more people. On a per capita
basis, it’s up over the last year by just half a percent, so that
is quite soft.
And falling business confidence is now being reflected in
how businesses are actually investing in their own enterprises.
You look at business investment, which is a component of
our GDP calculations, that’s risen by 0.3% in the year to June
– a year ago it was over 6%. That to me is evidence that
businesses, while not pulling back significantly, no longer
have the confidence to be investing more.”
Although we face the challenge of getting infrastructure
built because of capacity constraints in the sector, David
Lewis says the case for boosting infrastructure spending is
‘very strong’.
“One of the key reasons is that when you are looking at any
long-dated investment like infrastructure, whether you’re
a government or a business or even a household thinking

While the sharemarket is heading in the opposite direction
to business confidence, that is prompting Milford Asset
Management towards a more cautious stance as it positions
its investments.
“The strong performance of the NZX is leading some
share valuations in New Zealand to become a bit more
stretched, so we are taking a more cautious approach across
our portfolios in New Zealand. We’re not in full defence
mode, we’re just more cautious than we have been over the
last couple of years.”

Y
ou know it must be time to head for the hustings when party leaders step out
of the political thicket to reveal once again their stripes and spots and to bare
their fangs, reminding their constituents that they still have their concerns at
heart; to assure them that they are still relevant.
This time around, New Zealand First has been first off the blocks, way ahead of the
upcoming election season, making those familiar jingoistic noises as is its wont, come
election time. It has been doing this for years, targeting these messages at the bulk
of its well established, loyal constituency of greying New Zealanders, particularly in
the provinces.
Both Winston Peters and Shane Jones have picked on the Kiwi Indian community
in the past couple of weeks with Jones asking, “disgruntled Indians to take the next
flight home” and making references to bringing their “whole village” to New Zealand.
The community has objected strongly to these remarks and National Party MP
Kanwaljit Bakshi has reportedly sought clarification from the Prime Minister about
her cabinet ministers’ unfortunate utterances.
The NZ First leaders were both responding to the Indian community rightly voicing
its concerns to Immigration New Zealand’s new policies with regard to migration of
parents and spouses joining Kiwi Indians to live with them in New Zealand. Peters
and Jones once again played to the gallery of their constituents at the expense of one
of the largest and fastest growing ethnic communities in New Zealand.
The two leaders have showed an utter lack of sensitivity to a substantial ethnic
group’s traditional practices – in this case arranged marriages – casting aspersions on
two individuals in such a relationship as ‘partners’ as is ostensibly understood in New
Zealand. Peters was reported saying, “It’s clear as daylight – they’re not partners –
full stop.”
This has ticked off the Indian community and brought them together as they see
it as a clear cultural affront. It will not be long before its displeasure with the New
Zealand First leaders’ unreasonable stand and their hurtful public utterances rub off
on their largest coalition partner as well.
Jones’ and Peters’ verbal fireworks came in the midst of the Diwali season when the
festival was being celebrated across the country with an intensity rarely seen before:
Diwali is clearly and firmly on the way to becoming a mainstream New Zealand
festival, if it’s not already one yet.
Every major city and town across New Zealand has sent in reports and pictures
of their public Diwali celebrations to The Indian Weekender. Social media feeds are
full of New Zealanders of all origins participating wholeheartedly in office Diwali
functions, rejoicing in the feasting in colourful ethnic clothing and digging into the
endless rows of sweet and savoury treats.
Over in the UK, it’s election time as well, albeit much earlier than ours.
The Indian community there, which is a much bigger force to reckon with, has been
feted by none other than Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who in his Diwali message
not just spoke glowingly about the festival but also praised the Indian community for
its hard work, entrepreneurship, contribution to public life and its peace-loving nature
in a video that has gone viral. Johnson has made the right move in getting British
Indians on his side for the December election.
While Britain has moved on – like the United States has – some New Zealand
politicians still remain in the anachronistic 1950s monocultural mindset of the lack of
consideration, even tolerance, for anything and anybody who is different.
The New Zealand First leaders’ utterances go well beyond hurting just one
community. Their general, divisive tone is bound to cause concern across ethnic
groups – a collective demographic that is no longer insignificant in New Zealand’s
electoral math.
It is now up to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to respond appropriately and early
to the National Party MP’s request for a clarification if the Labour Party is indeed

Choice before BJP: Hindu rashtra
demands one course, polls another
A
fter the Maharashtra, Haryana
elections, when I reverted to friends
and acquaintances, my personal pool
for an opinion survey, a majority heaved a sigh
of relief. This was at variance from the response
of this very group during the 2019 Lok Sabha
election.
There was an unnerving consensus for
Narendra Modi. Why? I had asked then. “Well,
the Hindu sentiment” said a very friendly
member of my welfare association.
Now that the BJP is diminished, why this
sigh of relief? Mixing up “pride” in Hinduism
with demonstrable “arrogance” of Hindutva
power may be the cardinal mistake the Modi-
Amit Shah duet have made.
Ultranationalism will give a platform an
initial boost to take-off but ultranationalism
cannot be sustained over long distances.
Boosters en route to stoke nationalist
temperature will begin to look like the
handiwork of tricksters.
One surgical strike on Pakistani terror camps
will work wonders in one set of elections. But
repeat it on the eve of another election and folks
will screw up their noses: “again?”
There is, in other words, a decline in
credibility as frequency of requirement for
nationalism “boosters” increases.
In fact, even Article 370 turned out to be a
dud cartridge in this electoral round.
The Congress will be justified in taking heart
from the results, but it will have to accept many
qualifications. Its relatively decent performance
in both the states is despite the Gandhi family.
That is a problem Congressmen do not like to
talk about: how do they discard a dynasty?

Bhupinder Singh Hooda inaugurated the
Haryana campaign while the party high
command, Hamlet like, was sunk in thought.
On this electoral showing, Hooda is looking
a much taller Congressman than, say, Ahmad
Patel, Anand Sharma, Ghulam Nabi Azad,
etcetera. In Maharashtra, the Congress is
having to digest a principle it refused to accept
Trends in a rapidly changing world
“
Trend is your friend” is a phrase commonly
heard in the financial sector. While the
adage may not have universal application,
it does throw light on just how important it is to
be on the right side of trends in a global market.
Two observations from the business world, one
from the United States consumption market
and one in Indian investments, help provide
unique insights into changing trends.
The first trend emanates from the issues the
food giant Kraft Heinz has been confronted
within the United States over the last couple
of years.
The second trend is the increasing interest
in Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs) in
India by mutual funds, so much so that they
have poured in Rs 8,528 crore in the first
nine months of the calendar year 2019. The
first trend is indicative of how crucial general
market trends are for even the best of investors;
the second one illustrates a pattern that both
investors and developers of infrastructure
assets in India must be cognizant of.
The issues that the food company Kraft
Heinz has faced have broadly revolved around
a significant shift in the consumer preference
in the US towards healthier foods and away
from processed foods (a key focus area for
Kraft Heinz) and a focus by the owners of
Kraft Heinz on cost-cutting as opposed to
innovation. Considering that Kraft Heinz share
is down 50 per cent year-to-date and has seen
an even more significant decline over the last
two years, underscores the importance of being
on the right side of the trend. The trend here
during the Lok Sabha elections.
It refused to be a junior partner to Akhilesh
Yadav and Mayawati in Uttar Pradesh, to
Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi, or Mamata Banerjee
in West Bengal.
Instead of joining them, on whatever terms
available, to fight the Bharatiya Janata Paty
(BJP), it turned upon them, hoping to come up
trumps. I heard the BJP sing in chorus: “With
such enemies, who needs friends.”
The Congress was clobbered in the three
states. I wonder what the “janeudhari”
Brahmin, Rahul Gandhi is upto these days other
than temple hopping? (Or, has he given up the
practice). Two cameos come to mind.
There was Rahul, flanked by Ashok Gehlot
and Randeep Surjewala, addressing a post
campaign press conference on the fifth floor
of Ahmedabad’s Radisson Blu hotel. Someone
asked where was the most senior Gujarati
Congressman, Ahmad Patel?
He had been advised not to appear at the
press conference. His presence might give BJP
the ammunition to polarize the vote.
The Supreme Court judgment on Sabarimala
lifted the ban on women of childbearing age
to enter the shrine. The RSS smacked its lips.
Here was an issue of “aastha”, faith.
The cadres would whip up an almighty frenzy
is, as stated above, a move towards healthier
eating option.
Kraft Heinz is a behemoth in the consumer
market given the size of its business, and
hence, the decline in its prospects demonstrates
just how difficult it is for even the largest and
savviest of companies to prosper when being
on the wrong side of the trend.
More importantly, when one considers that
Kraft Heinz was owned by marquee investors
such as Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Capital, it
is apparent that regardless of the best resources,
“trampling” trends is a difficult task. Broader
structural shifts in the consumer market are of
such force, that being able to ride the trend can
provide significant benefits, while being on
the wrong side of the trend can be extremely
problematic.
The real skill is deciphering the trends to
ensure that capital and resources can leverage
their full potential.
In the context of the issues, Kraft Heinz
has faced, it is also vital to note that social
dynamics structurally drive financial and
business trends. While a move towards
healthier food options has adversely affected
the prospects for processed food companies

Vikram because of two reasons -- one, Vikram is located
outside the area the US agency photographed, second,
because it's lying in a shadowed part of the moon.
On July 22, the Rs 978-crore Chandrayaan-2
was launched into space by India's heavy lift rocket
Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III
(GSLV Mk III) in a text book style.
The Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft comprised three
segments -- the Orbiter (weighing 2,379 kg, eight
payloads), Vikram (1,471 kg, four payloads) and Pragyan
(27 kg, two payloads).
After five earth-bound orbit raising activities,
Chandrayaan-2 was inserted into the lunar orbit. On
September 2, Vikram separated from the orbiter. It made a
historic landing attempt on September 7.
According to NASA, Vikram attempted a landing on
a small patch of lunar highland smooth plains between
Simpelius N and Manzinus C craters.
This event was India's first attempt at a soft landing on
the moon. The US agency said Vikram's targeted landing
site was located about 600 kilometres (370 miles) from
the south pole in a relatively ancient terrain (70.8AoS
latitude, 23.5AoE longitude).
According to NASA, Vikram had a hard landing and the
precise location of the spacecraft in the lunar highlands
has yet to be determined.

Minister Prafulla Mallick on Wednesday said that the state
government is committed to complete mining auctions on time.
Over 300 non-captive mining leases across the country are lapsing on
March 31, 2020. In Odisha alone, 24 working leases are going to lapse.
“Odisha government has already started the auction process for mineral
blocks. Auction of three iron ore blocks, one manganese block, two
chromite blocks and one graphite block has already been completed,”
said the Minister. He was addressing the India Mining Conclave 2019,
organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) here.
“Auction of another 31 mineral blocks is in the pipeline and notification
for the same has already been issued. This auction process will be completed
in a phased manner. Out of 31 blocks on offer, 27 blocks are of iron ore
mines, two of graphite and two of manganese mines,” the Minister said.

and garam masala powder. Dal Pakwan

national cancer registries.

27,881 individuals were

per cent) were obesity-related.

were overweight before age 40,
the risk of developing cancer
increases by: 70 per cent for
endometrial cancer, 58 per cent
for male renal-cell cancer, 29
per cent for male colon cancer
and 15 per cent for all obesity-
related cancers (both sexes).

A Dimension Beyond Memory
What you call as your body and your mind
is a certain accumulation of memory. Memory
is what has made you everything that you are.
For example, if a man eats a piece of bread,
the bread becomes a man. If a woman eats it, it
becomes a woman.
If a dog eats the same bread, it becomes a
dog. That’s a smart piece of bread! It is not
the bread but the kind of memory the system
carries that transforms bread into a man,
woman or dog.
The very structure of your body is a certain
dimension of memory. Memory is also a
defining boundary.
But there is a dimension of intelligence
which we call chitta, or in modern terminology,
it can loosely be called consciousness. This
dimension of intelligence has no memory in
it. Where there is no memory, there are no
boundaries to it.
Human intellect is an island. All products
of human intellect are small islands, including
technology.
Consciousness is the ocean in which we
exist. Consciousness is an intelligence that is
not identified with any memory or boundary
of you and me, and this and that. This is
a dimension of intelligence which has no
boundaries.
As our technological capabilities increase,
we must also strive to upgrade human beings to
move beyond the limitations of their intellect
and come to a deeper dimension of intelligence
which is the very source of life itself within us.
Infrastructure for Consciousness
If anything needs to happen, a certain
amount of human energy, time, and resource
has to be dedicated to it. So, we have to invest
in consciousness.
Till now, we have been investing only in
our survival. But once these technologies start
becoming a reality, survival will not even be
an issue.
When survival is not an issue, we will
definitely start investing. But the sooner we
invest, the lesser the aberration when we move
into these new possibilities that technology
will open up.
Technology is always a double-edged sword.
Which way you are going to use it depends on
who you are.

But can we claim we are the most joyful

worse than other generations, but we are not
significantly better, despite the amount of toll
we have taken on every other life to have what
we want to have.
These technologies will bring comfort and
convenience but will not bring wellbeing. It is
time to focus on inner wellbeing.
Right now, your wellbeing is still determined
by what is around you, not what is within you.
If your body and your brain took instructions
from you, would you keep yourself healthy
and blissful every moment of your life?
If you had a choice, definitely you would. If
you are not blissful every moment, obviously,
your body and your brain are not taking
instructions from you. This means you are not
conscious enough.
So we have to invest in that direction. In our
cities, there are hospitals, schools, toilets, and
everything. But do you have a place for people
to meditate?
When technology starts doing most of the
things that you are doing now, and you do
not know why you exist, then the need for
inner wellbeing will become super-strong.
So if we want to be ready for that day, it is
very important that we invest both physical
infrastructure and human infrastructure which
focuses on the innermost core of who we are.

ashion is always perceived as fun
exciting a dream job come true, but is
it really? We went behind the scene
with Kaleidoscope fashion events, creating
new things is always a challenge for our crew.
we always, strive to create something different
to entertain and captivate our audience with
innovations.
But this is not always an easy task, hence
comes the story of when life gives you lemons,
you make fashionade’.
Our head photographer had an objective.
Delegated the creative director i.e. me that
he wanted an artistic shoot, with our makeup
artist. So, as I set out on mission to recruit. what
I thought at that point of time was going be an
easy photoshoot.
Sorted our make-up artist the lovely Maaru
and our model Lara, who is always keen to try
out new looks. But guess what someone forgot
to tell me, that you can’t find red chilies during
winter. what I had planned in my mind, little
did I know it was going to come crashing down.
Lara had advised it was going to be piece of
cake, getting red chilies from the Asian store so
hence I was relaxed how hard can this be.
Came the day of the photoshoots, I get a
message that there are no chilies in the market.
Maaru had come early. So, we both decide to
drive to vegetable store checked 3 shops. Still
no red chilies and green chilies prices was sky
rocketing.
Especially when we were on a budget. My
heart was pounding in my chest, I had run this
scenario over my head. So much
for not thinking this through
before.
Our model was

because of one

around. Time
that we could
have spent on set

Painting a leaf that was so life like.
Lemon and Green chilies have always been a
great combination in cooking dishes. We used
some green chilies in this artistic look that we
were about to create.
After spending nearly 5 hours with makeup
and polishing of the buckets of lemons to
give it a shine, we aligned ourselves for the
photoshoots.
We created live videos of our work and took
some still shots of the work that surrounded the
shoots. Taking 1000 plus photos work began.
