Before we are going to smoke, it is better to look at the facts. About 50 thousands people
die every year in Britain as direct result of smoking. This is seven times as many as die
in road accidents. Nearly a quarter of smokers die because of diseases caused by
smoking.
Ninety percent of lung cancers are caused by smoking. If we smoke five cigarettes a day,
we are six times more likely to die of lung cancer than a non smoker. If we smoke twenty
cigarettes a day, the risk is nineteen times greater. Ninety five percent of people who
suffer of bronchitis are people who are smoking. Smokers are two and half times more
likely to die of heart disease than non smokers.
Additionally, children of smoker are more likely to develop bronchitis and pneumonia. In
one hour in smoky room, non smoker breathes as much as substance causing cancer as
if he had smoked fifteen cigarettes.
Smoking is really good for tobacco companies because they do make much money from
smoking habit. Smoking, however is not good for health both the smokers themselves and
every body else.
TASK 3
Directions:
You will hear some conversations spoken in English. You will be asked to answer the questions
about what the speakers say in each conversation. The conversations and the questions will not be
printed in your test book and will be spoken only once. Select the best answer to each question and
mark the letter (A), (B), (C), (D), or (E).
1. Man : I personally think that uniforms are necessary for senior high school students,
don’t you?
Woman : Yes, I agree with you. I think that school uniforms prevent a gap between rich and
poor and they also make students look neat and respectable.
Man : Yes, you are right. Moreover, school uniforms don’t cost much money because we
can wear them for 3 years.
Narrator : What can be inferred from the conversation?
2. Woman : Do you think that we have to stop giving money to beggars, Ted?
Man : I think so, because giving money to beggars doesn’t help them in the long run.
Actually it hurts them, by taking away their motivation to work.
Woman : Yeah . . . I absolutely agree with you.
Man : And I think that they are abusing the generosity of people by gaining sympathy
through children and babies.
Narrator : What can be inferred from the conversation?

KD 06 Private letter
TASK 2
Listening
Source:https://www.listenaminute.com/p/postal_service.html
I wonder what will happen to the postal(01) service. When I was young, I used the post
office a lot. I went to the post office every week to buy stamps(02) and send letters. I
got excited every morning when the postman came. There was usually one letter for me
– a real one. At Christmas and around my birthday I would get lots of cards. But today
the post office is very different(03). I can’t remember the last time I went. I think the
Internet(04) is killing the post office. Most letters and mail sent today is via e-mail. I don’t
even go to the post office to buy stamps. I get them from the local store. I’m not sure if
the post office can survive, especially with competition from courier(05) companies like
Federal Express and DHL.
BARCODE SOURCE LINK:https://qrinfopoint.com/account/89936/
I hate junk mail. I’m sick and tired(06) of it filling up my InBox. I mean, who believes the
stuff written(07) in it? I love the ones that start with “Dearest” and then tell you how
their uncle died during some war and they need your help to transfer(08) $18 million. I
wonder how many people fall for those. My spam mail filters do a pretty good job at
keeping junk mail(09) away from my InBox. But, I occasionally get a mail trying to sell
me medicine. The most dangerous kind of junk mail is called phishing. That’s when a
criminal-fakes an e-mail to make it look like it’s sent from a bank. It looks exactly(10) the
same as a bank’s mail. The mail asks you to reset your password. The criminal then takes
your money.

SOURCE :https://qrinfopoint.com/account/89937/
E-mail certainly keeps me busy. I never used to write as many letters as I do now. In the
good old days before computers(11), we wrote real letters, with paper and envelopes. I
wrote one or two letters a week. But now, with e-mail, my in-box is never empty. There’s
always someone mailing(12) me. I would like just one day where I’m free of e-mail. The
sad thing is, very few mails I get are interesting(13). I get loads of spam – junk mail
trying to sell me things I don’t want. I also get lots of mail from people(14) asking me to
do stuff. Do this, do that, reply ASAP. It’s too much sometimes. The one good thing about
e-mail is that you can get things done quickly.(15) I can e-mail a company in another
country and they can mail me back in two minutes.

Dear Abigail,
I hope this letter finds all of you in the best of health and spirits. All of us are also doing fine
here. It has been a very long time since we met or wrote to each other. So I thought of
penning down a few lines to check things with you.
We just got back from our vacation to Thailand and had a great time. We went to Phuket and
Bangkok. Amazing and must see places. If you happen to ever plan a holiday to that side of the
world, do let me know, and I shall give you tips on sightseeing, shopping, etc.
I want to share something that is disturbing me these days. Mum has not been keeping good
health, and I am really worried about her. Sometimes I see bad dreams about her, and they
wake me up in the middle of the night. I am sure you know what bad dreams I am talking
about. Please don’t share this with anybody and I know I can trust you on this.
Anyways you say what is up with you and how is work? I can see that it is keeping you busy, as
I haven’t heard from you at all.
Give my love to your mum and dad and loads of love to you too.
Stay in touch and do write!
Take care.
Love,
John.

SCRIPT TASK 4
When we talk about ocean, we often visualize it with blue colour. Why is the ocean
blue? Anyone know the answer? Well, this is the explanation.
Sunlight is made up of all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green,
blue, and violet. Some of the sunlight is reflected off the surface of the water,
reflecting the color of the sky. Some of the sunlight penetrates the water and is
scattered by ripples and particles in the water. In deep water, much of the sunlight
is scattered by the oxygen in the water, and this scatters more of the blue light.
Water absorbs more of the red light in sunlight; the water also enhances the
scattering of blue light. Sir Chandrasekhar Venkata Raman (an Indian physicist) won
the Nobel prize in 1930 for his work on light.
