1. The supersonic wing/airfoil sketched below is being considered for use in various future planetary
missions by NASA. It has a maximum thickness of 0.1 m and chord length of 2 m and it will be tested in an
air environment at M=2 and at three angles of attack α=0o, -5.71o, -10o.

2m

M1=2, 0.1 m
p1=1 atm,
T1=288oK
1.1 Determine the lift and drag coefficients per unit span at these three angles. (50%)
Please note that 1/2ρU2=1/2γpM2

2. Assume a moving planar shock wave with constant velocity Ws in a stagnant environment (zero
velocity) with temperature T1 and pressure p1. Write down the equations of mass, momentum and energy
conservation in a coordinate system moving the shock front. (30%)

3. Calculate the sonic conditions including velocity in m/s, pressure in Pa, temperature in oK and density in
kg/m3, for the flow with M=3, temperature T=240 and pressure p=0.7 atm. (20%)
