"Freedom Writers"

I liked the film Freedom Writers because is based on real story. The thing I liked
most about this film was include It has attention and emotional scene. I liked the
movie a lot because it shows how a teacher can make a change in so many
students. The movie is about high school freshmen who are in this English class for
the first time and most don't really get along because of gang and race relations. A
teacher really tries to teach the students. She takes them to field trips and buy
them things and the students want to learn.

Freedom Writers is a movie based on a real-life educator who taught in California

in the 1990s following the Los Angeles riots. The teacher, Erin Gruwell (played by
Hillary Swank) moves to the city of Long Beach, California where she begins
teaching at Woodrow Wilson High School. The high school has recently undergone
changes to its student population as a cultural integration plan is being
implemented. Many of the school’s staff is less than eager about teaching to “at-
risk” students. Mrs. Gruwell is hired to teach freshman English. All her students
are considered “at-risk”, many are in gangs, and there is a high level of racial
tension among the students. Mrs. Gruwell realizes quickly that until she can bring
her students together and create a moral community, learning will not take
place. After many attempts to connect with her students, Mrs. Gruwell gives all
her students a journal in which they are required to write daily entries. The
students may write anything they like, and Mrs. Gruwell designates a locked
cabinet for students to place their journals in if they would like her to read their
entry. Mrs. Gruwell soon finds out that all her students have a story to tell and
want to share their story with her.
The main actors/actresses in Freedom Writers were? Hilary Swank, the main
female character who played Mrs. Gruwell, Patrick Dempsey, Mrs. Gruwell’s
husband, and April Lee Hernandez, who played Eva Benitez. They all did a good job
acting. Mrs. Gruwell do a good job in this movie. She was an advocate for her

1
students. She helped give them a voice and share their story. She raised the bar
for teaching “at-risk” students. She was a moral model, mentor, and
caregiver. She exemplified every character value she taught. She respected her
students, made them responsible, held them accountable, and set a high standard
for them to achieve.

In one of the most powerful scenes in the film, Erin draws a line in the center of
the classroom and divides the students into two groups. She then asks a series of
questions, telling the students to step up to the line if their answer is yes.

• Do you know anybody who has been in jail?

• Do you know where to get drugs?
• Have you have lost a friend to gang violence?
• Two friends?
• Three friends?

As the students stand on the line, they realize they are standing face-to-face with
those of other races, backgrounds, and "tribes." They realize that they share
certain common experiences despite their differences.
Moral values that I have learned in the Freedom Writers movie is if you try your
best, you can achieve what you are aiming for. It is different because it is real. Erin
Gruwell teaches them to be real, to be honest, and to be themselves. From the
movie, one learns that she started her effort to reach out to the students,
including working a second job, when she was still a student teacher.
The other moral values that I have learned is we have to respect our teachers while
they are teaching. As we can see in the movie, the students have not pay attention
while the teacher was teaching. One situation happened where a student has
drawn a picture of a person and pass it over around the floor and they
have laughed, until the teacher realized on what has happened. The teacher has
managed to control the situation where she told the student who drew the picture
to make some drawings on the board because that student might have a good

talent in drawings. This is how that I think a teacher should do to make students
feel ashamed on what they did.

This movie is PG a rating. The purpose of the movie Freedom Writers is to teach
lessons for living a quality life. Freedom writer is one of the good movies. B grade
for this movie from my side, 4 out of 5 numbers, and 4stars.
