Movie Critique: Freedom Writers

Differences can't easily be accepted. They thought that because they're from different
places they need to stay on their own territory. They thought that because they're different they
deserve different rights, different kind of respect that should be inflicted on others. They thought
that they're in a continuous war of proving their worthiness. Everyone was born differently no
person could be the same. Even twins can be different from each other. We are all different but
we are all also humans. Same humans that deserve their own rights. This was the movie was all
about.

The movie started chaotically. Where a certain school holds the class where races of
children meet. Erin Gruwell just got accepted in her new work as a teacher in the said school. As
she was a new unexperienced teacher she was given ti handle a class of what the school
concidered "very low in performance" or unhandleable. But Erin Gruwell with full effort of
understanding and support she managed to make her class open to each other especially to her.
Through the diary where the class' similarity in their experiences was compiled. They later on
formed their group as Freedom Writers. Publishing their diary, they managed to share their
experiences to others that still haven't realized the true world.

The movie portrated a very realistic society where people always categorized each other in
groups and base their respect on their place in society. The message of the story was directly
proclamed realistically this kind of society. It can easily be understood. I would like to point out,
as I came to realize that almost some characters in the story that holds the main part where they
showed their gradual change where Females. The class got influenced by the book of Anne
Frank. The person who kept Anne Frank was also Female. Erin Gruwell also is a Female who
sacrificed a lot for the sake of the class. And Finally, Eva who showed a great improvements in
her personality and the way she viewed the real world and Sindy has matured in understanding
the situation she was in. Maybe aside from the racism that the movie was pointing out. It also
brought a special message where women was also once categorized as incapable and lower being
to men.

The movie did a great job in delivering the message they seek to share. It will continue to
live its purpose as categorization still exist in this world. Values that were in the story can be
adapted by everyone. From it we would realize that categorization will never fade in this world.
Life can be harsh. People will continously judge you but people will also learn to understand in
time. Just be yourself and be true people wil realize that we all have similarities waiting to be
shared by opening up.

Movie Critique: Freedom Writers

The movie is about a teacher, Ms. Erin Gruwell, also known as Ms.G, just started teaching
as a sophomore English teacher at the Woodrow Wilson High School. The students she's
teaching are part of gangs and also who have witnessed somebody they know get killed by gang
violence. The only person that the students hate more is Erin but that feeling stopped until she
has a group discussion about a drive-by that recently happens. Also, until she started a daily
journal assignment for them to work on. The student begin to trust Erin and open up to her. Erin
finds that her spending to much time with her students is putting a wall between her marriage to
Scott Casey. She finds it hard to teach properly, also, to put up with her colleagues especially
Margaret Campbell who lives by the regulations and rules and Brian Gelford who is protecting
his position as a senior honor classes.

I think the most appropriate critical approach for this movie is marxism. Because this
movie represents the social life of the students, on how they're treating each other according to
what group they are from. The movie shows that if you are not in a same group you won't having
someones respect. The students thought that if you are in a group the other groups are your
enemies. They are claiming territories even if it is not theirs to claim. This movie tells that if
you're weak you'll die, because every individual students have their own belief that they are
fighting for. For me the movie is great i liked the ending of it, because the students and Erin will
not be separated in their junior and senior year. It gave me goosebumps when the students called
Erin "ma" as a sign of respect, i adore Erin because she can sacrifice anything just for her love
for her students. But if i was the director, even though the movie is based in real life, i want Erin
and her husband be back together, so that Erin would be more happy because her husband
supports her on what she's doing.

According to Pubililius Syrus "Where there is unity there is always victory", i can relate
this quote to the movie Freedom Writers, because from the movie the students become unite as a
section, as a family even though they're not in the same group of gang. They made each other
successful by respecting each others differences. This unity brought them in top, because without
each others help they won't be able to graduate. And their source of unity is Erin Gruwell's
strong faith, that all of her students can become a family from enemies.
