2) Evaluation:
In my opinion the film " freedom writers " is a film that educates students or teachers who
watch it, because from the film we can accept or take the exemplary nature of the teacher
who teaches in full struggle and patiently faces the existence of clashes between tribes
within the school which results in such conflict.
The film is also easy to understand for ordinary people who speak English, because the
characterization and storyline make us able to enter into the story so that it is easy to
understand
3) Interpretative Recount:
Synopsis:
Freedom Writers is a film that tells about the struggle of a teacher in the area of
New Port Beach, Long Beach, California, United States in reviving the spirit of their students
to learn. Narrated, Erin Gruwel, a highly educated woman, came to Woodrow Wilson High
School as an English teacher in class 203, where there are various racial ganks that are
always grouped, such as frangipani, black, latin and white races, and at when it was warmly
discussed about the issue of racism.
At the beginning of Erin's arrival, the students were not at all interested in his presence.
Most of them are unhappy with white people. They assume that Erin does not understand
anything about their harsh lives, lives that are always under the shadow of war and violence.
For them, life is how they survived violence.
Many challenges that must be faced by Erin, both from the racist school, to the husband and
father. Discrimination carried out by the school, such as the separation of classes, as well as
differences in facilities seen between the white race and the outside race, made Erin sad. In
order to be accepted by his students, Erin looked for ways to make appropriate teaching
approaches and methods. However, since Erin was preoccupied with approaching his
students and working part time, a new problem arose, he was divorced by her husband.
Until finally, his father, who initially did not support, turned around to support Erin's work.
Erin understood the condition of his students who were always in groups with their
respective races. Finally, he found a way to "reach" their lives by giving them books, and
asking them to fill them with daily journals. In fact, when the school discriminated against
book facilities, Erin gave a new book about gank life that was attached to their daily lives
with their own funds. Since reading a daily journal that tells about their hard lives, Erin is
increasingly eager to change the lives of their students, and to remove the invisible
boundaries that culturally separate them in amazing ways.
Erin brought his students to the tolerance museum tour to introduce the outside world to
their students and increase their motivation to learn. As a result, his students began to be
motivated and then allegedly the children of his class had the idea of raising funds to bring
Mrs. Miep Gies, a woman who helped Anne Frank, a Jewish child who lived during Hitler's
time and his holocaust. Finally, after the funds collected, the children's dreams were
realized, Erin brought in Mrs. Miep Gies to share stories with his students about a disaster
that happened because of racism. Many of Erin's other efforts were challenged by the
school parties even though for the time being she did not despair and remained confident in
her decision.
Finally, Erin's persistence in educating them was fruitful. The children, who had originally
hated each other because of racial differences, eventually became friends and erased racial
barriers between them. In fact, when there was a shooting case that happened to a friend of
his students, he taught about the meaning of honesty. And Eva who witnessed the shooting
that took place in a shop owned by a Chinese person, and she knew that the culprit was her
own friend but in the court she chose to be honest even though the result was that her own
friend would become a suspect. The daily journals they have written, typed and collected
into one book. Erin named the collection of diaries of his students with the name The
Freedom Writers Diary.
4) Evaluative Summation:
Criticism and Suggestions:
I disagree with the violence that occurs in the school because it could have a bad impact
on students who watch the film by adhering to what is in the film.
And my suggestion is to pay attention to the impact of the film for other people who see it
when making a film again.
For the characterization of a teacher, I strongly agree, because it can motivate teachers or
lecturers to educate their children that "businesses never betray results"
