CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

I. Introduction

This chapter presents the methodological procedures that were utilized in the study. It

presented the population and sample, the data gathering procedure and tools, and the sample

interview questionnaire.

II. Population and sample

A. Participants of the Study

The researchers would interview two maintenance personnel of the school for the

capacity of the Jaime Cardinal Sin Building at Paco Catholic School. In line with this, the

researchers would also interview three engineers from outside the school. The engineers that

were interviewed are (1) Gervin Ojales a civil engineer, (2) Reynaldo Cabreza a civil engineer

and (3) Jaime Villa an electrical engineer.

B. Sampling

The researchers used a Non-probability purposive sampling. To be able to attain the

answers that this study aims, the researchers chose qualified and eligible participants based on

their field of work. The participants of this study are credible sources of information that were

able to give factual data about the capacity of the Jaime Cardinal Sin Building to withstand

earthquakes.

III. Data Gathering Procedure and Tools

A. Instrumentation
The researchers used field notes to record the data gathered throughout the interview.

In order to gain information on the capacity of the Jaime Cardinal Sin building to withstand to

earthquakes, the researchers utilized guiding questions to facilitate discussion and generate the

needed information.

B. Research Design

The researchers utilized a qualitative case study research design for this study which

aims to know the capacity of the Jaime Cardinal Sin Building in Paco Catholic School to

withstand earthquakes in anticipation of the “Big One”. It is designed to ask open questions to

the people to be interviewed to know the specific details that is needed in conducting this study.

Through this design the researchers can analyze the answers of the people to be interviewed.

The answers they can give cannot be limited as they can answer it openly according to the

questions that is asked. This type of research design could help the research in this study for

most of their answers is where the researchers would rely the results to.

C. Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers made guide questions for the interview which would be used for the

data gathering. The researchers made appointments for interviews with the school maintenance

personnel and licensed engineers. The participants would be interviewed one by one, by asking

all the prepared questions. All of the answers of the participants would be recorded and

documented through field notes. Through this procedure, the researchers would be able to

collect and gather all the necessary data.
