5. In a sample study the tea habit in two towns following data observed in a sample of size
100 each.
Town A : 51% persons were male, 31% were tea drinkers and 19% are male tea drinkers
Town B : 46% persons were male, 26% were tea drinkers and 17% are male tea drinkers
Is there any association between Gender and Tea drinking habits? If so in which town it
is greater?

6. There are 800 graduates in a village, out of which 320 are female and 80 women are
unemployed. Also given that 150 male graduates are employed. Test whether

8. A sample analysis of an examination result of 200 students were made. It was found that
46 students had failed, 68 secured 3rd class, 62 secured 2nd class and the rest were
placed in the first division. Are these figures commensurate with the general
examination result which is in the ratio 2:3:3:2 for various categories respectively?

9. The divisional manager of a chain of retail stores believes the average number of
customers entering each of the five stores in his division weekly is same. In a given
week, a manager reports the following number of customers in his stores : 3000, 2960,
3100, 2780, 3160. Test the divisional manager’s belief at a 10% level of significance?

Variance Test

10. A plant has installed two machines producing polythene bags. During the installation,
the manufacturer of the machine has stated that the capacity of the machine is to
produce 20 bags in a day. Owing to various factors such as different operators working
on these machines, raw materials etc. there is a variation in the number of bags
produced at the end of the day. The company researcher has taken a random sample of
bags produced in 10 days for machine 1 and 13 days for machine 2 respectively. The
following data given the number of units of an item produced on a sampled day by the 2
machines.
Machine 1 →18, 19, 19, 18, 17, 19, 18, 19, 18, 19
Machine 2 → 16, 17, 17, 17, 16, 18, 16, 16, 17, 17, 16, 16, 17
How can the researcher determine whether the variances are from the same population
or it comes from different populations? (Take α = 0.05)

11. Samples from two makers of ball bearings are calculated and their diameters (in Inches)
are measured, as follows.
Country A, n1 = 80, S1 = 0.0395
Country B, n2 = 120, S2 = 0.0428
Merlin B Joseph, Asst. Prof., BIMS RM
Assuming that diameter of the bearings from both companies are normally distributed.
Test the claim that there is no significant difference in variance of the diameter between
two companies.

12. Test whether the following two populations have the same variances
A : 12, 11, 10, 9, 13, 12, 15, 14, 16
B : 21, 25, 23, 22, 21, 26, 27, 32, 31

13. The random samples were drawn from two populations and their values are :
A :, 66, 67, 75, 76, 82, 84, 88, 90, 92
B : 64, 66, 74, 78, 82, 85, 87, 92, 93, 95, 97
Test whether the two populations have the same variance @ 5% level of significance.
