1. INTRODUCTION
Industrial visit to chennai metropolition water supply & sewerage board at koyambedu at
chennai on monday July 31,2017 .

Fig 1.1.Entrance of chennai metropolition water supply & sewerage board at koyambedu at
Chennai.

1.1 General information

 There are two sewage treatment plants at Koyambedu and they jointly have the
capacity to treat 94 million litres a day (mld) of sewage generated in localities such as
T.Nagar, Kodambakkam, Anna Nagar, Virugambakkam and Mogappair.
 The sewage treatment capacity of the city is set to be enhanced with Chennai
Metrowater preparing to float tenders for construction of another plant to treat 20 mld
at Koyambedu.
 The new plant will facilitate treating of more sewage - generated in the neighboring
suburbs. The ₹ 1,160-million project, which was sanctioned under Jawaharlal Nehru
National Urban Renewal Mission, will come up at a 25-acre site in the existing
facility at Koyambedu
 . It was planned to isolate the system of collection, transmission and disposal of
sewage in each zone in order to obviate the difficulties of the relay system. Presently
the sewerage network in Chennai city has covered 98% of its area Koyambedu
214mld (34+60+120)

2. PURPOSE OF VISIT
Our main purpose for this visit was to give the practical knowledge about water treatment
plant process. By this visit I can be familiar with industrial environment and get knowledge
of different units of waste water treatment plant. Also in 6th semester subject like
Environmental Engineering requires knowledge about how components of sewage plant are
constructed, so it is very much convenient to see all the practical and components in real time
work environment

CHAPTER 3

3. WHAT WE LEARN
On 31th July, 2017 at 9:30 A.M. we reached at sewerage treatment plant at chennai. The
visit started from the initial tank where the waste water of Chennai collected. Mr. Prasanna,
the in charge officer of water treatment plant guided about the entire process of water
treatment plant.

CHAPTER 4

4. STAGES OF WORKING
4.1 Screening 1
First unit of water treatment plant is screening, this is first step in wastewater treatment
process. screening involves the removal of large objects for example cotton buds, plastics,
diapers, rags, sanitary items, face wipes, broken bottles or bottle tops that in one way or
another may damage the equipment

4.2 Primary Treatment

This process involves the separation of macrobiotic solid matter from the wastewater.
primary treatment is done by pouring the wastewater into big tanks for the solid matter to
settle at the surface of the tanks which is removed by large scrappers at the center of the
cylindrical tanks. the remaining water is then pumped for secondary treatment.

7
4.3 Secondary Treament
The next step of the treatment process is secondary clarifier. The water from the primary tank
is transported to the secondary clarifier for adding chemicals such as lime and alum to reduce
the PH of water. 1

4.4 Aeration Tank

The settled wastewater enters aeration tanks where air is blown into the liquid to provide
oxygen for mixing and to promote the growth of micro-organisms. Some of this sludge is
recycled to the inlet of the aeration tank to maintain the biomass, hence the name for the
process activated sludge. The remainder is pumped to anaerobic digester for further
treatment.

8
4.5 Disinfection unit
The next steps for wastewater treatment plants use disinfection for treatment to
reduce pathogens, which are micro-organisms which can pose a risk to human
health. 1

4.6 Sludge Digestion

Now again to remove the sludge particles the water is passed through the belt filter press. The
purified water is obtained by chemically treating the water coming out of the belt filter press.
In which Chlorine is usually dosed into the treated wastewater stream for disinfection.

5. CONCLUSION

From this visit, we get the information and practical knowledge about the treatment of waste
water and components used in treatment plant. and got the knowledge about detailed process
of sewage treatment.
