3x3 Rubiks Cube Guide

F = Front side (Side facing you)

B = Back side (Side facing away from you)
R = Right side
L = Left side
U = Up side or top side
D = Down side, or bottom side

C = clockwise rotation
CC = counterclockwise rotation
2x = rotate that side twice in any direction (clockwise or counter equals the same)

1: Make white plus sign with yellow middle on one of the sides (Ignore corner pieces for now on that side)
2: For each white in the plus sign; check color on side of white, turn to its own color (of middle one on that
side). Then rotate each side 180 degrees. Once the 4 white pieces have been turned 180 degrees, the result
will be a white plus sign with the middle white.

3: Find other white around cube while keeping white facing up for performing moves: Look at color on Side of
each white: turn that color to its own side (color in middle).

4: Repeat up to 4 times until full white is achieved.

5: Face all white to back when performing moves, on front side that’s facing you, look for colors around middle
yellow that aren't yellow. (Ignore corners) Then locate other color on one of the front non-yellow cubes and
then turn front layer until that top color matches its own side (middle color of side represents that side’s entire
color)
7: Look where that cube’s color needs to go to fit on top color and side color, then do pattern accordingly:
if it needs to go on left: turn front away from left, turn bottom layer towards left, turn left side towards you, turn
middle layer towards left, turn left side away from you. Then fix white.

If it needs to go on right: turn front away from right side, turn bottom layer towards right, turn right side towards
you, turn middle layer towards right, turn right side away from you.

Then solve the white side back by locating the side with the most white, then finding the next side with the 3
whites in a row, move that side to the other side with lots of white to make an almost complete white side, then
locate the single white that’s missing, move that layer away, move the middle section with the missing white
down, then move the bottom section back to its original spot to pick up the last white piece, then move the
middle section back up again to complete the white side.
Do all pieces that have no yellow, then If only yellow exists on the top side of a front colored piece, then you
have to replace that top yellow in the same way with one of the left or right cubes. Repeat one of the patterns
above in this 7th section depending on which side you want to replace the cube with the top yellow.

Repeat as many times as necessary until 2 rows of the cube are solved.

8: After two rows have been solved, then with white side facing down: (If you have a perfect yellow plus sign
(with yellow middle); then skip to next step):

If you have yellow 'hook' shape on top:

Turn top layer hook shape to top left corner and perform the following move:
F=C
U=C
R=C
U=CC
R=CC
F=CC

If you have 3 yellow in a row running through the middle either up or down, keep white at bottom and perform
the move with the 3 yellow parallel with you:
F=C
R=C
U=C
R=CC
U=CC
F=CC

**If you don’t have a hook, or 3 yellow in a row running through the middle, then perform the hook up, without
worrying about putting the the top layer to the top left like you would with the hook.**

10: Once you get a yellow plus sign with yellow middle; Keep the yellow plus sign facing up and perform the
pattern with one of the single side yellow pieces facing you **Remembering to locate the piece beside the side
single yellow piece and rotating it to it’s own color side will speed up the process; you won’t have to perform
the move as many times in a row.** The goal is to get the yellow ‘Fish’ shape with a side yellow piece on the
right. (Explained again lower down):

R=C
U=C
R=CC
U=C
R=C
U=2x
R=CC
A ‘Fish’ shape will appear eventually in yellow with what looks like a head and tail. It is only correct though if
the top ‘Fish’ shape’s head is facing left AND you have a side yellow piece on the front side on the right. If not,
then keep repeating pattern until full yellow (Point yellow ‘Fish’ to bottom left) when repeating pattern.

11: Now you will have a full yellow side. With full yellow side facing up: Rotate the top layer until a side with two
corner colors that are the same shows up on its own side so you now are either missing only 1 top middle
piece, or it’s now a completed side. Then face the completed side away from you (While keeping yellow facing
up) and continue:

**Repeat the following twice if each top corner color on a side aren't matching: (skip if the corners do match to
Step 12):

R=CC
F=C
R=CC
B=2x
R=C
F=CC
R=CC
B=2x
R=2x

12: All corners should now match: At this point, you can choose to only remember the Clockwise pattern, or
you can learn the counter-clockwise moveset. It will be more difficult to remember, so I would suggest
spending a few days or weeks solving the cube with just the clockwise pattern until you’re comfortable learning
the counterclockwise:

Rotate top layer until only middle cubes are different. And do the following:

The Clockwise pattern:

R=2x
U=C
R=C
U=C
R=CC
U=CC
R=CC
U=CC
R=CC
U=C
R=CC

Counter clockwise pattern mentioned in lesson:

Figure out if you have to do clockwise turning of the top layer or counter clockwise turning by seeing where the
different color cube goes that’s on the front facing you (top middle piece). It can either complete the cube by
going clockwise or counter clockwise. If it will complete the cube by moving clockwise, then do the clockwise
pattern above. If it will complete the pattern by moving the top layer counter clockwise, then with always
having any full side facing away from you, perform the counter clockwise algorithm:

R=C
U=CC
R=C
U=C
R=C
U=C
R=C
U=CC
R=CC
U=CC
R=2x

And you’re done! CONGRATS! The more you practise, the faster you’ll get!
