Fast-Food Research Project
Directions:
1. Go to your assigned fast-food restaurant and ask the serviceperson for a copy of
the brochure listing the nutritional content of that establishment’s foods.
2. In a typed, professional paper, answer the following questions:
a. What fast food establishment did you visit, and why did you choose to
complete your project on this establishment? I visited Subway for my fast
food research project. I choose subway because I believe it is the
healthiest out of all the fast food establishments.
b. When did this restaurant first open? How many restaurants do they have
operating statewide and nationwide? The first store was opened in
Bridgeport, Connecticut in August, 1965. There are 24,929 in the United
States and there 40,859 in 105 countries.
c. How frequently do you eat at fast-food establishments? Not frequent at all
maybe about once a month and sometimes once every two weeks
depending on friends.
d. List 3-5 reasons you eat (or you believe others eat) at fast-food
establishments. I think people eat at fast food restaurants because it’s
quick and easy. Also, most fast food restaurants are cheap and with this
economy it’s difficult to eat pricy healthy food. Also most people aren’t
educated to know how to prepare their own food or to know that eating
fast food all the time is dangerous for them.
e. Describe your experience obtaining the company’s nutritional brochure at
the restaurant. The experience of obtaining the nutritional brochure at
Subway was not difficult in fact they encouraged it because everywhere I
looked in the restaurant the nutritional value was in plain sight. They hand
it to you in a napkin and also while you are ordering anything of the menu
the nutritional value is on the glass.
f. Choose a fast-food meal that is typical for you. Refer to the restaurant’s
brochure, and for each of the meal’s components list the following
information (This should be in a table form- list each component of the
meal individually and include an overall total column):

Breaking down the Foot long Sweet Chicken Onion Chicken Teriyaki

g. Calculate the dollar cost of the energy content of the meal (divide total
calories by the total cost). This tells you how much bang (energy) you are
getting for your buck. 570/$11.04=51.63
h. What percentage of your estimated daily calories is contributed to this
meal? Carbs 2800/1000= 2.8% Protein 27/1965=1.3% Fat 8.5/1965=0%
i. What do you believe is the most unhealthy item on the menu and why? I
believe the meatball melt is the worst sandwich in subway because it
doesn’t have any nutritional value. I looked up the nutritional value and it
has 600 calories, 29 grams of fat; 12 of them saturated, and the sodium are
at 1,560 milligrams.
j. What do you believe is the most healthy item on the menu and why? I
believe the healthiest item is the oven roasted chicken because anything
that is roasted is better than anything else.
k. Does this restaurant provide “healthy options”? Explain. Are they really
healthy? Yes, Instead of buying the meatball melt buy the veggie delight.
Instead of getting Doritos chips get the yogurt parfait. Instead of getting
the roasted garlic bread get whole grain nine wheat bread. They are really
healthy because you can see the different nutritional values.
l. What did you learn from this assignment? I learned that even the
restaurants that praise they are health have unhealthy items on their menu.
