Did you know that most adolescents
fail to meet the recommended dietary
requirements for caloric and
nutrient intake? Many teens, in
fact, receive most of their calories
from processed and high fat foods. A
low intake of essential nutrients
including vitamin A, folic acid,
fiber, iron and calcium in prevalent
among adolescents. A low intake of
iron and calcium is common among
female adolescents, which can impair
cognitive function and physical
performance, as well as increase a
female’s risk for osteoporosis later
in life.

What are teen eating habits and why are they important to
recognize? By understanding teen eating habits, you will be
better prepared to evaluate the nutritional adequacy of your
diet and ensure you are meeting the minimum requirements to
maintain your health and wellbeing.

Task: 1 (5 Points)
1. Read the article titled “How Fast Food Affects Nutrition in
Teens.”

2. Write a paragraph reflection on how you feel (after reading


the article) and what you currently know about teenagers
and fast-food restaurants. Be sure to include a brief
summary of the article. In order to receive the full 5
points, your paragraph must include:

● A total of 8-10 complete sentences with proper


grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
● 4-5 sentences summarizing the article (do not
plagiarize – you will be put on behavioral contract!!)
● 4-5 sentences about what you learned from the article,
how what you learned made you feel, and what you
already knew about teens and fast food.
Task: 2 (15 Points)
Use the following website
https://tinyurl.com/FastFoodNutritionalFacts and select three
fast food restaurants. One to eat at for breakfast, one for
lunch, and one for dinner.

a) Choose a typical meal that you would eat at each


restaurant.
b) Outline the nutritional facts in the charts below,
documenting how many calories, total fat, total sodium,
total cholesterol, and total fiber is in each item. You do
not have to select three food items at each restaurant, but
you might consider adding the main item, side item, and
beverage.
a. For example, if you ordered a cheeseburger, fries,
and a soda, you would list the cheeseburger in the
first box, the fries in the second box, and the soda
in the third. If you need an additional line for
another food item, add a line to the chart, or include
two items in the same box.
c) Be sure to write the name of the restaurant in the box that
says “Restaurant Name”
d) Add up the totals for each meal at the bottom of each
chart.
