Vaibu Mohan- What do I bring to the table assignment
1. Strengths as a singer, dancer, and actor
1. Singer- I am a proficient singer in classical vocal technique, contemporary/Golden age musical theatre, and Carnatic (Indian classical) vocal technique. I am a versatile vocalist and am a very quick study. I am an excellent sight singer and can learn difficult music with little to no guidance. I also have a wide array of vocal repertoire ranging from pop, disco, funk, alternative, and country. 2. Dancer- I have been training as a Bharatanatyam dancer for 16 years. This is a form of South Indian classical dance which I am proficient in as a performer and choreographer. I have also trained in ballet and jazz for 4 years and tap for 4 years. I am comfortable when someone uses dance terminology when teaching a combination. I also feel that I embody the energy of pieces I dance very well and can communicate that in my performance. I categorise myself as a strong mover and I am a quick study. I can learn choreography very quickly and internalise it. I also have experience in Bollywood, salsa, bachata, and zumba. 3. Actor- I have training in Shakespeare, Meisner, and Stanislavsky technique. I am a receptive acting partner and focus on receiving what my partner is giving me and reacting to that. I approach my characters from the energy I am receiving from them and I stay unbiased and impartial when I am doing my prep work. My job is not to judge my character but to tell their story. I am equally comfortable in classical work as I am in contemporary pieces. 2. Personal strengths 1. I am dependable, trustworthy, and reliable. When I make a commitment, I will see that commitment through. I always arrive to rehearsal early so that I can warm up in the space and assess the energy of the room. I always try to bring my best and most positive energy to the rehearsal room and help extend that energy out to everyone else in the room. I am respectful of everyone’s time in the room and try to make the most of our rehearsal time together. As a director, I always start my rehearsals by checking in with everyone who is in the room and meeting them where they are. I find that asking people to bring what they have encourages them to assess their energy and try to put their best foot forward as well. 3. Physical strengths 1. My eyes are the best feature of my face. I’m tall and curvy. I have long legs which gives me nice extension. 4. Weaknesses 1. I can keep working on my dance skills. I am not the most technically proficient dancer so that can be improved. I can keep working on my mix in my vocal training. I have a strong upper and lower register and I still need to work on bridging them. I need to get better at allowing myself to make mistakes and a mess in the rehearsal room. I still expect perfection from myself even in the rehearsal room, but I need to risk big and fail big because failure is just another learning experiences.
