COMPARITIVE STUDY OF BUILDING WITH TUNE MASS DAMPER AND FLEXIBLE FRAME

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction

Civil Engineering structures have to withstand natural environmental forces like wind,
earthquake forces and wave forces, along with loads that they are designed to resist. All this
environmental forces are random and dynamic in nature. Therefore the response of the structure
is also dynamic and that is what causes the unsafe and uncomfortable conditions. Therefore there
is always a need for some sort of control of response of structure. The vibrations of high-rise
structures resulting from various dynamic loads should be kept within the permissible limit of
service. These vibrations result in reduction of stiffness, which results in consequent failure of
structural members. The amount of damping is crucial in the reduction of response of the
structure to vibration.
The tuned mass damper (TMD) is one of the effective and economical devices to mitigate
vibration of structures. Its purpose is to reduce the structure’s energy demand by absorbing and
dissipating a portion of the energy.

CHAPTER 2
LITERATURE REVIEW
Published literatures available in refereed journals with regard to Tuned Mass Damper
have been surveyed from year 2000 onward and are reported here in

Genda Chen and Jingning Wu (2001) [1] have worked on optimal placement of
multiple tune mass dampers for Seismic structures. Several optimal location indices were defined
based on intuitive reasoning, and a sequential procedure was proposed for practical design and
placement of the dampers in seismically excited building structures. Numerical results show that
the multiple dampers can effectively reduce the acceleration of the uncontrolled structure by 10–
25% more than a single damper. Time-history analyses indicate that the multiple dampers
weighing 3% of total structural weight can reduce the floor acceleration up to 40%.

B. K. Han and C. X. LI (2005) [2] Proposed dual-layer multiple tuned mass dampers,
referred to as the DL-MTMD consisting of one larger tuned mass damper and several smaller
tuned mass dampers with the total number of tuned mass damper units being the arbitrary integer
and with the uniform distribution of natural frequencies to seek for the mass dampers with high
effectiveness and robustness for the reduction of the undesirable vibrations of structures under
the ground acceleration. The numerical results indicate that the DL-MTMD can render better
effectiveness and higher robustness to the change in the natural frequency tuning (NFT), in
comparison with the multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMD) with equal total mass.

Yogesh Ravindra Suryawanshi , Amar shitole and D.T. Rahane (2012) [3] studied the
Tuned Mass Dampers System as Vibration Controller in Multistoried buildings and effectiveness
of its use in large structures. They studied the history and inner working of tuned mass dampers
in the Taipei 101 Tower in Taiwan.

Ashish Mohite and G.R.Patil (2015) [4] have worked on Analysis of symmetrical
moment resistance frame (MRF) 10th,12th,14th,16th,18th, and 21th storey three – dimensional
model with tuned mass damper and without tuned mass damper by using software ETABS. A
tuned mass damper (TMD) is placed on its top and through it to study its effects on structural
response due to time history analysis with and without the tuned mass damper (TMD) in

ETABS. The result obtained from software analysis of 10th,12th,14th,16th,18th, and 21th storey
building with and without tuned mass damper and compared result with each other. It was
observed that TMD is effective in reducing displacement and acceleration and, thereby, can be
used for structures under earthquake.

Zheng Lu, Kun Li and Ying Zhou (2019) [5] have worked on comparative study of
performance of the structure with optimal tuned mass damper and optimal particle damper using
three cases including single-degree-of-freedom structure, 5-story linear-elastic steel frame and
20-story nonlinear benchmark building. The numerical simulation shows that the properly
designed particle damper certainly has better vibration control effect than that of the optimal
tuned mass damper, not only for elastic performance indexes, but also for nonlinear performance
indexes, such as the number and maximum rotation of plastic hinges, and energy dissipation of
components.

Lekshmi Suresh and K. M. Mani (2019) [6] have worked on the effect of Multiple
Tuned Mass Dampers for Vibration Control in High Rise Buildings. In this study multiple
smaller dampers distributed within the structure either uniformly, varying linearly, or based on
the judgment of the designer and tuned to the first, second, and third natural frequencies. A
MTMD system was investigated for different base excitations, namely harmonic and seismic.
The proposed system significantly reduced the displacement, acceleration, and base shear
response at the next-higher-order natural frequency beyond the fundamental. The responses of
the structures were compared to assess the optimal placement of dampers to attain highest
performance.

2.1 Summary on Literature Review:

Literature survey on the available journals with regard to Tune mass dampers are carried
out and it was observed that use of Tune mass damper will significantly reduce the response of
the structure like Displacement, Acceleration and base shear. It is also observed that use of
Multiple Tune mass damper (MTMD) is more effective than Single Tune mass damper (STMD)
with respect of response of structure.

NEED FOR PRESENT WORK

In this work analysis of structure is to be performed by designing the top story frame of
the structure as a tune mass damper. Comparison of structure with TMD and structure with TMD
frame is done. Results are obtained for various parameters like Displacement, Acceleration and
Base shear.

CHAPTER 4
METHODOLOGY
Methodology to be adopted for the analysis is Time History analysis (Non linear dynamic
analysis).

4.1 Time history analysis

It is an important technique for structural seismic analysis especially when the evaluated
structural response is nonlinear. To perform such an analysis, a representative earthquake time
history is required for a structure being evaluated. Time history analysis is a step-by-step
analysis of the dynamic response of a structure to a specified loading that may vary with time.
Time history analysis is used to determine the seismic response of a structure under dynamic
loading of representative earthquake

4.2 Steps in brief for Software using Finite element Software Etabs.
1. Prepare the model with required configuration.
2. Define the loads and combinations and perform analysis for required combination.
3. Get the results response of the structure.
4. Compare the response of building with TMD with normal building.

CHAPTER 5

FINITE ELEMENT MODELING

The finite element method (FEM) is a numerical method for solving problems of engineering and
mathematical physics. Analyzing a phenomenon with FEM is often referred to as finite element
analysis (FEA). FEA is a computerized approach for predicting how a product reacts to actual-
global forces, vibration, warmth, fluid drift and other bodily effects. FEA shows whether a
product will break, wear out or work the way it was designed. Structural evaluation entails
determining the behavior of a structure whilst it's far subjected to masses, including the ones on
account of gravity, wind, or maybe in extreme cases natural disasters. The use of simple ideas of
implemented mathematics, any constructed shape can be analyzed together with building,
bridges, dams or even foundations.

5.1 About the FE software using Etabs.

Civil Engineers used laboratory experiments to solve these design problems, especially in
regards to the behavior of the steel structures when subjected to high wind loads and
earthquakes. However, such reliance on laboratory testing was costly and not immediately
accessible. Thus, structural codes were developed. These codes made it easier for engineers to
define what sort of behavior was acceptable and safe for standard structures.
The modern and revolutionary new ETABS is the remaining incorporated software package for
the structural analysis and layout of buildings. Incorporating 40 years of continuous studies and
development, this state-of-the-art ETABS gives unequalled 3D item primarily based modeling
and visualization gear, blazingly rapid linear and nonlinear analytical power, state-of-the-art and
comprehensive layout skills for a huge range of substances, and insightful graphic presentations,
reports, and schematic drawings that allow customers to quickly and without problems decipher
and apprehend analysis and layout outcomes.
