Design of Concrete Bridges

Time: 3 hrs. Max. Marks:100

Note: 1. Answer any FIVE full questions.
2. IRC6, IRC21, IS456, IS1343 and Pigeaud’s curves permitted.

1 a. Classify the bridges based on various aspects and explain any two in detail. (10 Marks)
2. Any revealing of identification, appeal to evaluator and /or equations written eg, 42+8 = 50, will be treated as malpractice.

b. List the forces to be considered while designing a bridge and explain any two in detail.
(10 Marks)

2 Following data refers to a deck slab culvert. Span is 5m, Road-Two lane national highway,
footpath 1m on either side, wearing coat-80mm thick. Loading is IRC class AA tracked.
Materials – M25 grade concrete and Fe415 steel. Design the slab and draw a sketch showing
PImportant Note : 1. On completing your answers, compulsorily draw diagonal cross lines on the remaining blank pages.

reinforcements details in the slab. (20 Marks)

3 a. With a neat sketch, explain the components of a T-beam slab bridge. (05 Marks)
b. Design the cross girder for a T beam slab bridge, given the following data:
Effective span = 15m
Loading = IRC class AA tracked
Thickness of slab = 220mm
Thickness of wearing coat = 80mm
Kerb width = 600mm
Materials are M25 grade concrete and Fe415 steel. Carriage width is 7.5m. Cross girder 5
numbers at 3m c/c and longitudinal girder at 3m centre to centre. (15 Marks)

4 Design an interior panel of a bridge (T-beam) having the following details:

Span = 14m
Number of longitudinal girders = 3
Spacing of longitudinal girder = 3m c/c
Spacing of cross girder = 3.5m
Materials are M20 and Fe415 steel. Use Pigeaud curves. (20 Marks)

5 Design a RCC T-beam girder to suit the following data:

Clear width of roadway = 7.5m
Span (centre to centre of bearing) = 16m
Thickness of wearing coat = 80mm
Materials are M25 grade concrete and Fe415 steel. Design the longitudinal girder using
Courbon’s method and sketch the typical details of reinforcements. (20 Marks)

6 Design a post tensioned pre stressed concrete slab bridge deck for a national highway to suit
the following data for class AA tracked vehicle.
Clear span = 10m
Width of bearing = 400mm
Clear width of roadway = 7.5m
Footpath 1m on either side
Wearing coat thickness = 80mm
Permissible stresses in compression at transfer is 15N/mm2 and at working load is 12N/mm2,
but no tension is allowed. Tensile stress in steel is 1500N/mm2 but stressed to 1200 N/mm2.
Find the prestressing force and eccentricity. (20 Marks)

7 A post tensioned prestressed concrete bridge deck has the following data:
Effective span = 25m
Footpaths = 1m on either side
Spacing of cross girders = 5m c/c
Clear width of roadway = 7.5m
Thickness of wearing coat = 100mm
Live load : IRC class AA tracked vehicle
Materials : M50 grade concrete for girders, 7mm diameter high strength strands with ultimate
tensile strength 1500 MPa. The cable consists of 12 strands anchored at end with a suitable
diameter anchor block compressive strength of concrete at transfer (fci) is 40MPa. Design
the main girder estimating the prestressing force, eccentricity and number of cables.
(20 Marks)

8 Write short notes on any four:

a. IRC loadings with sketch (any one).
b. Henry Jaeger and Guyon Massonet methods.
c. Box culvert and slab culvert.
d. Advantages of prestressed concrete bridges.
e. Balanced cantilever bridges. (20 Marks)
