Over the years more and more people started

relying on air- conditioner whether in summer or

winter. While this temperature-controlling
machine gave convenience and great benefits
to people all around, Americans started over
using the energy for air-conditioning, resulting
in a great amount of energy waste. Eric
Klinenberg pleads to the audience through his
passage that Americans need to raise
awareness of this issue and reduce their
reliance on air conditioning. Klinenberg
establishes his argument through using strong
evidence to back up his claim, employing
creative word choices, and appealing to cause
and effect to the audience. To start off with,
Klinenberg uses authorative observation to
address the situation current Americans lies in,
saying, “Today Americans use twice as much
energy for air-conditioning as we did 20 years
ago.” This statement starts off his passage
strongly, and makes the audience realize the
serious situation of air-conditioning’s energy
waste. Also Klinenberg uses current events to
back up his claims, “New York City prohibited
stores from pumping arctic air out onto the
searing sidewalks in attempt to lure
customers…” By using a current event,
Klinenberg successfully demonstrates to the
readers how big cities had been using
excessive and unnecessary amount of
energy—pumping cool airs on the street—just
to lure more customers, and that the
government had realized this issue. Through
employing different types of evidences in his
passage, Klinenberg proves to the audience the
cold hard facts of wasting air-conditioning
energy. Other than employing strong
evidences, Klinenberg use descriptive and
creative dictions, which intrigues the audience
and helps them to visualize the situation. Using,
“crank them [air conditioner] up”, “converting
homes… into igloos”, and ”put our air
conditioner on ice.” Through using slightly
humorous and descriptive dictions, Klinenberg
not only successfully grabs reader’s attention,
but also makes his passage more approachable
to everyone by balancing the usage of
academic words as “conservatively” and
descriptive words as “luring”. Although
Klinenberg include evidences and fun dictions,
without his tactical reasoning, this passage
would not be complete. After stating the
situation America lies in, Klinenberg uses cause
and effect to show the audience now America’s
reliance on air-conditioners has influence the
entire world. Klinenberg writes, “As a result,
there is now on espectation that indoors airs will
be frigid.” He also states thanks to America,
India and China had been started to rely heavily
on air- conditions also. By using cause and
effect, Klinenberg persuades the audience that
if people keep on wasting air-condition energy,
the entire world would be hopeless. Air
conditions do bring a lot of benefits to people’s
life, but have they used it the correct way these
past years? Not at all. As Klinenberg says, we
should “put our air-conditioners on ice before it
is too late.”
