 Extraction Ventilation
Concept
• Extracting smoke at the fire location
– Applicable to bi‐directional or 
congested unidirectional tunnels.
– Typically achieved by zoned 
transverse ventilation or single point 
extraction.
– Typically requires exhaust 
ventilation ducts and a system 
capable of localizing hot gases and 
smoke and extracting them at the 
fire location using exhaust high 
temperature rated ventilation fans.

• Ability of the emergency ventilation system to generate the critical velocity

The “critical velocity” is defined as the minimum air velocity required to 
suppress the smoke flow spreading against the ventilation flow during tunnel 
fire situations.
